Foreword by Any Soltis
Game annotations by Karsten Muller

The first official world chess champion, Wilhelm Steinitz dominated chess from the 1860s to the early 1890s. His opening ideas and positional theories laid the foundation for modern chess. According to Aron Nimzowitsch "Steinitz had probably only one imperfection - that he was about 50 years, at least, ahead of his generation!"

This book tells the story of Steinitz' life, games and opponents with written biography, annotated games and background material. The five chapters are:

Life and Fate
Steinitz' activities in the various countries in which he resided and played; The Austro-Hungarian Empire, England, U.S.A., Germany, Russia and Cuba.

Matches, Tournaments, Rivals
Steinitz' tournament and match record with annotated games, results and tournament crosstables as well as brief sketches of some of Steinitz' leading contemporaries and opponents. In all the book has 88 annotated games, of which 74 feature Steinitz whilst the others are included to illustrate the style of his opponents.

Chess Art
The Game and Discoveries examines the contribution to chess knowledge made by Steinitz, his predecessors and his contemporaries.

Writer and Journalist
The writings of Steinitz in books and magazines and periodicals.

Forever and Beyond
