Larry Evans

Vienna 1922 was one of the first great tournaments after World War I, featuring a host of stars including Alekhine, Rubinstein, Reti, Bogoljubov, Maroczy, Tartakower and Tarrasch amongst the fifteen participants.

The original version of this book of the tournament was the first chess book written by Larry Evans, in 1948, in order to make the games, then largely in the hands of chess collectors, available to the wider chess public. In 2010 he was persuaded to revise the book and his annotations to produce this new edition. To preserve the flavour of the original book the notes do not refer to any games played since 1948.

The tournament was won convincingly by Rubinstein, thus reviving for a time his hopes for a match with Capablanca. Evans book includes all the games with annotations, diagrams, photos of the players and the tournament cross table.

Grandmaster Larry Evans was a leading light of the post-WWII American chess scene, being U.S. Champion five times, an Olympiad medallist five times and a prolific chess author and journalist. He died as this book was going to print.

Published 2011, softback, 144 pages.
