Sample pages (pdf)

Grandmaster John Nunn has carefully selected thirty games to help the reader understand the most important aspects of the chess struggle and to illustrate modern chess principles in action. Almost every move is explained in clear language and most of the games are from the 1990s and show how key ideas are handled by the Grandmasters.

The book is divided into three parts: Opening Themes, Middlegame Themes and Endgame Themes. A great follow up for those who have read "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy".

Dr John Nunn is one of the best-respected figures in world chess. He was among the world's leading grandmasters for nearly twenty years, winning four gold medals in chess Olympiads and finishing sixth overall in the World Cup in 1989. He is a much-acclaimed writer, whose works have won "Book of the Year" awards in several countries. In 2004, 2007 and 2010 Nunn was crowned World Chess Problem Solving Champion, ahead of many former champions.
