This move order avoids many unpleasant systems for White, notably the Catalan, the Exchange Slav and the Botvinnik Variation. It leads to sharp strategically unbalanced play and brings Black excellent practical results.

The Triangle concept in this book can be summarised in 3 principles:

1. Black does not plan to entrench himself/herself around the d5-square. On the contrary: Black aims to take on c4 in order to play double-edged positions with open centre and asymmetrical pawn structures.

2. Black does not cling to the extra c4 pawn. It serves only to distract the opponent’s forces from the centre. In many lines Black returns it with ..c5 to open lines for the bishop.

3. Black never plays ..f5 or any form of the Stonewall. After 4.e3 the author recommends transposing into the Meran Defence, covered in other books.

Semko Semkov is a Bulgarian International Master who has authored several best-selling opening books such as The Safest Sicilian and The Queen's Gambit Accepted. He has two GM norms and has played many times for the Bulgarian national team.
