Rudolph Spielmann played in the same era as Capablanca, Rubinstein and Nimzowitsch but his style was that of earlier times, abounding as it did in sacrificial and gambit play. He was described by Tartakower as "The last knight of the King's Gambit" and he wrote the classic book "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" based on his own games.

In this book Neil McDonald analyzes some of Spielmann's best games and most famous sacrifices and combinations with a mixture of complete and part games. He has organised the examples according to material theme with chapters such as The Noble Knight, Rampaging Rooks and Pawn Power. Each chapter includes examples of Spielmann's play together with quiz positions for the reader to solve. This study of Spielmann's play provides both entertainment and instruction for chess players of all abilities.
