Andrew Soltis

Since Soltis original book "The Art of Defence" was published in 1974 defensive techniques have evolved considerably. This is partly due to the advent of computer analysis: the nerveless calculating machines are adept at capturing material and then showing that positions considered "worse" or "indefensible" contain many hidden resources for the defender.

In addition, the advent of modern attacking players, starting with Mikhail Tal, who were prepared to launch highly speculative attacks based on sacrificial play and unfathomable complications, meant that standard defensive methods could not always be relied upon.

In "The New Art of Defence in Chess" Grandmaster Andrew Soltis shows how defensive thinking has changed in recent times and introduces the reader to the main weapons of defensive play such as sacrifice, risk management and prophylaxis. These ideas may not be new but their interpretation has changed in the modern game as dynamic defence has come to the fore. Each defensive method is illustrated by examples from master play, along with test positions for the reader to solve in each chapter.

Soltis offers practical advice on defensive mental attitudes such as staying cool under fire and exploiting the opponent's weaknesses; essential attributes for successful competitive play.

Andrew Soltis is a Grandmaster and chess correspondent for the New York Post. He is a popular and highly regarded chess author.
