Tibor KarolyiThe Prime YearsSample pages (pdf)
Volume 2 covers the period from 1986 to 2010 when Karpov was battling with his young rival Garry Kasparov for chess supremacy. In spite of, or perhaps because of, losing the World Championship to Kasparov it was during this period that Karpov produced some of his best games as he attempted to regain his crown. At Linares in 1994, for example, Karpov achieved what statistics show to be the finest ever tournament performance.
As in volume 1 Tibor Karolyi annotates 67 of Karpov's best positional wins from this period, arranged chronologically, with explanations of his strategies and statistical analyses throughout. As before the book includes indexes of openings and opponents as well as performance ratings for each year.
Tibor Karolyi is an International Master from Budapest who was Hungarian Champion in 1984. One of his previous books won the Guardians Book of the Year prize in 2007. Karolyi coached Peter Leko, who improved in 4 years from promising junior to world class Grandmaster.
