Journey to the Chess Kingdom was a standard introduction to chess in the Soviet Union and has been reprinted many times and translated into a number of languages. Surprisingly it has never before been translated into English - until now!
The book covers all aspects of chess from the moves of the pieces and notation to checkmate, tactics, openings and endgame ideas. It also contains some of the most famous games in chess history and a section on the World Champions from Steinitz to Carlsen.
There are puzzle positions along the way and a final "Practical Training" section with 60 quiz positions for the reader to solve.
Yuri Averbakh is a former Soviet Champion, candidate for the World Championship and chairman of the USSR Chess Federation. He also wrote the most important endgame manual in the history of chess. Michael Beilin was a famous lawyer, trainer of the Soviet National team and a prolific chess writer.
