Double rook endings occur frequently and are different from single rook endings in several respects. However, there is much less literature on them and this PC-DVD should help to fill the gap.

Many guidelines remain valid of course: activity is the order of the day, the king wants to blockade passed pawns, whilst the rooks do not and the rooks belongs behind passed pawns, be they friendly or enemy. However there are also many new motifs: most importantly king safety plays a much larger role due to the increased firepower on the board. Therefore the value of extra pawns often also increases as they can provide the king with much needed shelter. Furthermore endgame expert Karsten Mueller discusses the question of the right exchange in detail. This crops up much more often than in single rook endings, so it is important to develop a good intuition as to whether the attacker or the defender will profit more from exchanging a pair of rooks.

Grandmaster Dr. Karsten Mueller, from Hamburg, has been playing in the top division of the Bundesliga for the Hamburg Chess Club since 1988 and in 1996 and 1997 he came in third in the German Championship. An internationally recognised expert on the endgame, he writes the Endgame Column for ChessBase Magazine.
