Robert H Jones

A History of the Paignton Chess Congress

In this well researched book Bob Jones looks, from several different angles, at the sixty year history of the Paignton Chess Congress, which is probably unique in having been held annually in the same room at Oldway Mansion, the magnificent ballroom where Isidora Duncan once performed.

Firstly there is the story of the event itself, from it's creation in 1951 to 2010.

Jones also draws thumbnail sketches of ten remarkable personalities, some well-known and some forgotten, who have acted out roles of varying significance at the congress.
There are 60 games to play through, many either annotated by famous players or hitherto unpublished.

The book includes a chapter on the remarkable Singer family and the 200 year story of how their magnificent home became the venue of this event. The story is illustrated throughout with 80 pictures, of which 8 are in full colour, and 27 charts and cross-tables.

Bob Jones has been actively involved in devon chess for 50 years. He writes on chess for the Western Morning News and co-wrote, with Owen Hindle, the definitive biography of the first British Champion, Cecil de Vere.

Published 2010, softback, 156 pages.
