NAPIER - THE FORGOTTEN CHESSMASTERJohn Hilbert customer comments: 1) This book is about a player, little known in England, who emigrated about 100 years ago to the USA. Although he lived to a ripe old age, most of his life he did not play, preferring other activities. The cost of the book, which is well printed and sturdily bound, was nearly £35, a very great deal to pay for a chess publication. The author, who has subsequently written other books ~ his on Whittaker may be known to you ~ appears not to know much about the openings. The book has no results section, warmth or even any humour at all. It lacks good photos. Most of the games available to Hilbert are given, (I'd guess) quantity winning out over quality.I gather Mr. Hilbert has written a book about Walter Penn Shipley ~ which I'm yet to see ~ but I hope its better than this over blown effort. I study history and collect chess books, but there is a limit!! If all you want is information order it from the library.
