Steve Giddins
Although the endgame seems a long way off at the start of a game, World Champions such as Capablanca and Smyslov have recommended that up-and-coming players should actually begin by studying the endgame first. This is because only by studying simplified positions can one fully develop an understanding of how chess pieces work - both in isolation and with each other. A knowledge of the endgame is also of great help earlier in the game, enabling you to know what to aim for and what to avoid in the middlegame.
In this instructive and entertaining book, renowned endgame expert Steve Giddins selects 50 of the finest examples of endgame play in the history of chess. Through the medium of these 50 example games you can study different types of endgame and see how they have been played by the world's greatest players. Most of the selected endgames are taken from before the 1980s when time controls and use of adjournments meant that players had more time to study the final phase of the game in depth and produce some masterpieces of endgame play.
Giddins examines each example in great detail and uses them to explain the principles of endgame play. This book is full of essential guidelines and tips which all players should follow if they want to improve their endgame knowledge.
Steve Giddins is a FIDE Master and a former editor of British Chess Magazine. He is the author of several outstanding books and is well known for his clarity and no-nonsense advice.

Since the first edition of this book was published in 2006 much has changed in the Morra Gambit, both in terms of important games played and the ability to check analysis with computer chess engines. Every single variation in this new book has been checked using chess engines and several lines of play have been reassessed following top level correspondence games, resulting in the author's recommendations changing - especially in the Classical Main Line.
This completely-revised second edition has fourteen chapters, compared to eleven for the original, including new chapters on the increasingly popular Taylor and Tartakower Defences and separate chapters on the gambit declined with 3..d3; and 3..e5. All of Black's plausible defences to both the gambit accepted and declined are examined using analysis and key games which attempt to provide an objective assessment of both sides' chances in this sharp opening system.
Each chapter is based around theoretically important illustrative games with analysis and text commentary included in the annotations to the games. An introductory chapter explains some of the ideas behind and history of the Morra Gambit.
Author Hannes Langrock is a German International Master who has been playing the Morra Gambit with success for several years, including against Masters and Grandmasters. He is co-author of "The Modern Scandinavian".

Larry Kaufman
Grandmaster Larry Kaufman originally intended to write an update to his 2003 book "The Chess Advantage in Black and White" but, since so much has changed in eight years, he ended up writing a whole new book with completely changed repertoires for both White and Black. One thing which has been retained from the original book is the idea of playing the "second best" move in positions where it is not significantly worse than the "best" move. This ensures a dramatic reduction in the amount of theory to be learnt with little impact on the quality of play.
The repertoire this time around features 1.d4 for White with the idea of following up with an early c4. Black's various defences - classical, Indian and hypermodern - are analysed in fifteen chapters. For Black the repertoire is based upon the Grunfeld Defence to 1.d4 and the Breyer Defence to the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) after 1.e4. Flank Openings and 1.e4 offshoots such as the Scotch Game and Italian Game are, naturally, also covered in fifteen chapters.
The quality of analysis is higher than was possible in 2003 due to the vast increase in computer power and also to software improvements in the last eight years.
Larry Kaufman is an American Grandmaster who gained his title after winning the World Senior Championship in 2008. In recent years he has been involved in developing computer chess software, including Rybka.

Cyrus Lakdawala
The "Move-by-Move" series provides an ideal platform to study chess openings. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the "Move by Move" format greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of opening knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time improve your general chess skills and knowledge.
In this book, Cyrus Lakdawala examines the Caro-Kann, (1.e4,c6;) which enjoys a richly deserved reputation as one of Black's most reliable defences. It provides an ideal blend of soundness and dynamism, which allows Black to create counterplay from a solid platform. Lakdawala presents a repertoire for Black against all White's attacking systems including main lines, the Panov-Botvinnik Attack, Two-Knights System, Fantasy Variation, Advance Variation and other sidelines. Against the popular main-line (1.e4,c6; 2.d4,d5; 3.Nc3,dxe4; 4.Nxe4,) he advocates the Smyslov System (4..Nd7;) rather than the more frequently seen 4..Bf5.
Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master, a former National Open and American Open Champion, and a six-time State Champion. He has been teaching chess for over 30 years, and coaches some of the top junior players in the USA.

The Tarrasch Defence to the Queen's Gambit (1.d4,d5; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nc3,c5) is an immediate attempt by Black to free his game and challenge White's centre. It leads to sharp play with Black's isolated queen's pawn being a potential strength or weakness. It has been championed by attacking players such as Garry Kasparov and Boris Spassky.
This book offers an up-to-date analysis of the opening in twenty chapters, beginning with the main Rubinstein setup where White plays g3 and examining alternative systems in later chapters. The authors draw on earlier works, modern praxis and their own analysis to produce a comprehensive coverage of the Tarrasch Defence. Each chapter has it's own index and conclusions making it easy to follow the book and to find key lines of play quickly.
Jacob Aagaard is a leading author and has written several highly recommended coaching books. He became a Grandmaster and won the British Chess Championship in 2007. Nikolaos Ntirlis is a computer specialist and successful trainer from Greece.

The Chess Developments series provides state-of-the-art coverage of chess openings. It focuses on critical lines, current trends, powerful new ideas and cutting-edge theory. It offers players of all levels the opportunity to increase their opening knowledge and understanding, and to expand and enhance their opening repertoires.
In this book, David Vigorito examines the most important and instructive Sicilian Dragon games in recent years, concentrating exclusively on the Rauzer Attack (1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,d6; 3.d4,cxd4; 4.Nxd4,Nf6; 5.Nc3,g6; 6.Be3,Bg7; 7.f3). He maintains that the pace of change in the Classical and Levenfish systems is slow so that existing works provide adequate coverage of those variations.
He outlines the key ideas and presents critical analysis in what is a razor-sharp defence to 1.e4. The book is in two parts: part one covers 9.Bc4, whilst part two examines 9. 0-0-0, and 9.g4. Using 45 key games from recent play Vigorito provides the reader with the latest analysis and an explanation of current thinking in the Dragon.

The "Chess Developments" series offers state-of-the-art coverage of chess openings. "Chess Developments" focuses on critical lines, current trends, powerful new ideas and cutting-edge theory.
In this book Richard Palliser examines the latest thinking in the super sharp Modern Benoni (1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,c5; 3.d5) With this counter-attacking weapon against 1.d4, Black willingly creates an early imbalance which allows both sides to fight for the initiative in positions which are rich in tactical and strategic possibilities. He examines the most instructive and important Benoni games in recent years, focusing on the key new ideas and developments for both sides. Whether playing White or Black, this book arms you with all the latest trends in an important opening.
For a few years the Benoni has been under a cloud as White has prospered in both the Taimanov System with e4, f4, and Bb5+, the "Modern Main Line" with e4, Nf3, h3, and Bd3, and the Fianchetto System. Lately, however, Black has been finding new ideas and the Benoni is back in business! Using 45 extensively annotated critical games, Palliser presents the latest ideas, strategies and, of course, tactics for both sides in the Modern Benoni. He focuses on the currrently popular Modern Main Line, Taimanov System and Fianchetto System as these are where important developments have occurred in recent years.
Richard Palliser is an International Master and a former British Rapidplay Champion. He has firmly established a reputation as a highly respected chess writer, with many outstanding works to his name.

John Nunn
The three-times World Chess Solving Champion distils the most useful middlegame concepts and knowledge into 100 lessons that everyone can understand.
Following on from his successful Understanding Chess Endgames, John Nunn turns his attention to the middlegame - the phase of the chess battle where most games are decided, yet the one that has received the least systematic treatment from chess writers. With the outstanding clarity for which he is famous, Nunn breaks down complex problems into bite-sized pieces.
In the case of attacking play, we are shown how to decide where to attack, and the specific methods that can be used to pursue the enemy king. Positional play is described in terms of the major structural issues, and how the pieces work around and with the pawns. Nunn explains how to assess when certain pieces are better than others, and how we can make use of this understanding at the board. Readers will never be short of a plan, whatever type of position arises.
Each lesson features two inspiring examples from modern chess, annotated honestly and with a keen focus on the main instructive points. Both sides' ideas are emphasized, so we get a clear picture of the ways to disrupt typical plans as well as how to form them.
Dr John Nunn is one of the best-respected figures in world chess. He was among the world's leading grandmasters for nearly twenty years, winning four gold medals in chess Olympiads and finishing sixth overall in the World Cup in 1989. He is a much-acclaimed writer, whose works have won 'Book of the Year' awards in several countries. In 2004, 2007 and 2010, Nunn was crowned World Chess Solving Champion, ahead of many former champions.
