Jacob Aagard

The Grunfeld Defence's first outing resulted in victory for Ernst Grunfeld over Alexander Alekhine, who was not best pleased (see book for details). Thus, in 1922, a new opening was born and it has been going strong ever since with Botvinnik, Fischer and Kasparov amongst it's practitioners.

In this book, in the excellent "Starting Out" series, I.M. Jacob Aagaard explores the ideas and tactics available to both sides in the Grunfeld. In seven chapters containing 47 complete, annotated games he illustrates the latest theory in the Classical Exchange System (two chapters), the Modern Exchange System (two chapters), the Russian System, Bf4 & Bg5 Systems and Other White Systems.

Presentation is aimed at newcomers to the Grunfeld with tips, tricks and traps highlighted throughout. The standard of analysis makes this book suitable for experienced players who want to expand their opening repertoire rather than complete beginners. Coverage is balanced with no particular bias towards either side.

Published 2004, softback, 176 pages.
