By 1914 Russia was the strongest chess playing country in the world with the players such as Alekhine, Rubinstein, Nimzovich, Bernstein and Salwe. The purpose of this tournament was to find a qualifier to play in the Grandmaster tournament, also held in St Petersburg, later in 1914.

This book contains the 77 available games of the 153 games played, 2 games of the play-off between Alekhine and Nimzovich (both qualified eventually), 8 other games and 50 diagrams. The games have contemporary annotations where available.
