Former US Open Champion Timothy Taylor presents weapons for Black against the hugely popular Spanish Opening, with a repertoire based on the Modern Steinitz Defence. (1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.Bb5,a6; 4.Ba4, d6;) This has justifiably earned a reputation as an important alternative to the main lines, being a particular favourite of former World Championship contender Paul Keres as well as Champions such as Capablanca and Alekhine.
The appeal of the Modern Steinitz is that Black can choose between razor-sharp systems such as the Siesta Variation (5.c3,f5;), where one slip by either player could prove to be fatal, and more positional lines such as 5..Nge7; or 5..g6. Using 85 illustrative games, with extensive annotations and text explanations, Taylor studies the critical main lines, and also what to do if White avoids these. He also includes chapters on less commonly encountered systems such as the Yandemirov Gambit, Duras Variation, Delayed Exchange Variation and White's 5th move alternatives to 5.c3 and 5.0-0, as well as two chapters on the Exchange Variation 4.Bxc6.
International Master Timothy Taylor is an experienced tournament player who has enjoyed several notable successes, including winning the US Open. He is an accomplished chess writer who is renowned for his entertaining and thought-provoking style.
