Martin Weteschnik
An improved and expanded second edition of a modern classic.
'Chess is 99 per cent tactics' is an old saying. This may be an exaggeration, but even the remaining 1 per cent still depends on tactics. When Martin Weteschnik started working as a trainer in his local chess club, he quickly realized that even the stronger club players had great weaknesses in their tactical play. He also discovered that simply asking them to solve a huge number of puzzles did not fix the problem. These players clearly needed a good book, but when Weteschnik looked for it he found nothing suitable, so he decided to write it himself.
But Weteschnik was not completely satisfied with the book and decided to restructure and rewrite it completely. The first edition of this book, Understanding Chess Tactics, was hailed as a modern classic. This expanded and improved second edition offers more puzzles to test the tactical chess skill that Weteschnik helps the reader develop.

Helgi Olafsson
The Final Years in Iceland, a Saga of Friendship and Lost Illusions
Icelandic chess Grandmaster Helgi Olafsson was 15 year old in 1972, when in a sensational match in his home country Bobby Fischer beat Boris Spassky for the world chess title. Breathlessly, Helgi had followed the match and attended a number of games in the playing hall in Reykjavik.
When thirty-three years later his childhood hero was arrested in Tokyo, Olafsson became one of the members of the "Committee to Free Bobby Fischer". In 2005 Fischer returned to Iceland, a country he was never to leave again until his death in January 2008, and Olafsson and Fischer became fast friends.
Bobby Fischer Comes Home tells the story of their friendship and paints an intimate portrait of the last years of the man who many see as the greatest chess player that ever lived.

John Shaw
The King's Gambit must be the favourite opening of every attacking player. In the glory days of Paul Morphy, in the nineteenth century, to play anything else was regarded as almost cowardly; but in modern times the popularity of the King's Gambit has faded. Today's players, under the influence of their computer programs, are more materialistic and loath to sacrifice a pawn for long-term compensation. The honourable exceptions are Alexander Morozevich and Nigel Short, two world-class players who are willing to risk the King's Gambit. John Shaw seeks to popularise this ancient opening, with in-depth analysis solving many of the supposed problems with this opening. Despite the complexity of the material, the reader will have no difficulties following the book, as Shaw clearly explains the issues using his skill as an experienced author. The romantic King's Gambit was favoured by the chess elite of the 19th century, but can it thrive in the 21st century? Grandmaster John Shaw takes up the challenge.

Viacheslav Eingorn
Playing as Black in a game of chess can be difficult. Do you simply try to neutralize White's initiative, or go all-out to complicate the game? Either way, there are many pitfalls, and a lot of study may be needed.
In this book, Grandmaster Eingorn shows that it is possible both to play solidly, and to take White out of his comfort zone. He recommends ideas and move-orders that are a little off the beaten track, but which he has very carefully worked out over many years of his own practice. The repertoire, based on playing 1...e6, is strikingly creative and will appeal to those who want a stress-free life as Black. You will get every chance to demonstrate your chess skills, and are very unlikely to be blown off the board by a sharp prepared line. All you need is a flexible approach, and a willingness to try out new structures and ideas. Eingorn's subtle move-orders are particularly effective if White refuses to pick up the gauntlet, as Black can then use his delay in playing ...Nf6 to good effect and take the fight directly to his opponent.
Viacheslav Eingorn is an extremely experienced grandmaster from Odessa (Ukraine), who played regularly and successfully in the Top League of the USSR Championship in the 1980s. He has represented Ukraine many times in team events, winning a gold medal at the 2001 World Team Championship. Eingorn is a FIDE Senior Trainer, and coached the victorious Ukrainian women's team at the 2006 Olympiad.

Willy Hendriks
The chess playing mind does not work like a machine and selecting a move is not the logical outcome of applying a rational method.
The only problem with that, says International Master Willy Hendriks, is that most books and courses on improving at chess claim exactly the opposite.
The dogma of the chess instruction establishment is that if you only take a good look at certain "characteristics" of a position, then good moves will follow more or less automatically.
Move First, Think Later shows a healthy distrust of accepted methods to get better at chess. It teaches that winning games does not depend on ticking off a to-do list when looking at a position on the board. It presents club and internet chess players with loads of much-needed no-nonsense training material.

Neil McDonald
As we progress as chess players we quickly learn a set of guidelines which help us to formulate plans, develop typical strategies and recognize key tactics. However, chess is not an easy game, with fixed ‘rules’ that can be applied to every single position. In fact, blindly following such rules proves to be counterproductive and prevents a player from moving on to the next level, whereas knowing when to ‘break’ these rules is precisely the skill which separates the best from the rest.
In this instructive book, Grandmaster Neil McDonald studies in depth the key components of successful rule-breaking in chess. Drawing upon his own experience and using illuminating examples from modern grandmaster chess, McDonald examines how to avoid stereotypical thinking, how to exploit typical thinking patterns, and how to confuse and beat opponents with surprising ideas.
* Enhance your chess strategy and creativity
* Recognize and exploit typical thinking processes
* Covers opening, middlegame and endgame play

Fighting 1.e4 with the Kalashnikov
Are you searching for a new weapon against 1.e4? Look no further - choose the Killer Sicilian!
In this book, opening expert Tony Rotella presents a Sicilian repertoire for Black, the backbone of which consists of the Kalashnikov Variation (1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.d4,cxd4; 4.Nxd4,e5; 5.Nb5,d6). The Kalashnikov is an ideal choice for those looking to take up the Sicilian. Black follows an easy-to-learn system of development, with clear strategic aims. What's more, in many lines Black can choose between aggressive and positional options. It's no coincidence that the Kalashnikov has attracted such attacking talents as World Championship candidate Teimour Radjabov and multi-time US Champion Alexander Shabalov.
Rotella critically examines the main lines and lucidly explains the key positional and tactical ideas for both sides. He also shows what Black should do against White's various Anti-Sicilian options. Read this book and unleash the Killer Sicilian!
Tony Rotella is an experienced correspondence player, teacher, analyst and openings theoretician, from Ohio, USA.

John Watson
Such has been the acclaim for John Watson's ground-breaking works on modern chess strategy and his insightful opening books, that it is only natural that he now presents a strategic opening repertoire.
It is the chess-player's holy grail: a flexible repertoire that gives opponents real problems but doesn't require masses of memorization or continual study of ever-changing grandmaster theory. While this book can't quite promise all of that, Watson offers an intriguing selection of lines that give vast scope for over-the-board creativity and should never lead to a dull draw.
The repertoire is based on 1 d4 and 2 c4, following up with methodical play in the centre. Watson uses his vast opening knowledge to pick cunning move-orders and poisonous sequences that will force opponents to think for themselves, providing a true test of chess understanding. Throughout, he discusses strategies for both sides, so readers will be fully ready to pounce on any inaccuracies, and have all the tools to decide on the most appropriate plans for White.
International Master John Watson is one of the world's most respected chess authors. In 1999, his Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy won 'Chess Book of the Year' awards in the USA and the UK. His bestselling four-volume work Mastering the Chess Openings has reaffirmed his reputation as a perceptive and authoritative chess opening writer.
