Zenon Franco
This attacking manual from Grandmaster Zenon Franco examines some typical attacking motifs in various situations through the medium of 33, extensively annotated, attacking games in six themed sections. These include: The King in the Centre, Opposite Side Castling, Same Side Castling, Exploiting Temporary Advantages, Horwitz Bishops and Miscellaneous Themes. Many of the skills needed for attacking chess can be learnt by study and practice and so Franco, one of the world's most experienced annotators has explained these example games in a way that strips away the mystery. We see how the decision to attack is made, and which positional factors led to that decision being justified. We observe either a gradual build-up, or a lightning-fast storm, and understand why one approach or the other was necessary. Finally, we witness the final execution of the tactical blows.
The book also includes 73 diagrammed exercises, using positions from Master games where the reader has to find the correct attacking continuation. Zenon Franco is a grandmaster from Paraguay who now lives in Spain. He is an experienced chess trainer, his most notable pupil being Paco Vallejo, now one of the world's top grandmasters.

Amatzia Avni
Chess Tips for the Improving Player gives practical advice for club players who want to take the next step towards chess mastery. Amatzia Avni looks at life from an unusual angle. His approach is far more creative than merely offering the usual tips such as "develop your pieces" and "control the centre".
Instead of repeating clichés seen before in countless books, the author scrutinized a huge number of chess positions, asking himself, "What can be learned from them?" The reader can now benefit from Avni’s painstaking efforts as he presents these key positions in a wide ranging book covering such aspects of chess as strategy and planning, tactics, ideas, rules of thumb, learning and decision making. He also includes a chapter of training exercises.
Amatzia Avni is an Israeli psychologist who is a FIDE Master both over-the-board and of composition. He has written several original and critically acclaimed books.

Viacheslav Eingorn
The author is an chess opening trendsetter. Throughout his career, he has introduced many novel concepts in the openings, and some of the systems he has introduced have gone on to become absolute main lines, such as the Rb1 Exchange Grünfeld. Here he explains opening play from a modern viewpoint, explaining notable ideas from modern praxis.
The broad topics he discusses include Experiments in the Opening, Disturbing the Equilibrium, Strategic Planning, The Modern Game of Chess and Opening Structures. He follows this up with a section of examples from modern practice, and theoretical articles on several of the opening lines that he has pioneered, taking us through the creative process, and the highs and lows of the practical testing and refinement of the ideas.
Viacheslav Eingorn is a grandmaster from Ukraine. He played regularly and successfully in the Top League of the USSR Championship in the 1980s.

Alfonso Romero
A Spanish grandmaster explains how creativity can be used to overcome technical obstacles on the chessboard. Once they have obtained an advantage, too many players make the mistake of assuming that the exploitation of this advantage will just be a matter of technique, requiring accuracy but little imagination. Romero shows that the opposite is often the case: sometimes it is the paradoxical solution that works, whereas the mechanical method would fritter away the hard-earned advantage. By following Romero in his investigation of the many outstanding practical examples and complete games in this book, readers will inevitably increase their understanding of chess strategy in general, and fine-tune their instinct for sensing those critical moments when non-standard solutions are necessary. 16 chapters including Pawn Structure, Positional Exchange Sacrifice, IQP, Blockade and Attacking without Rules.

Chess is a game of decisions. As well as deciding about which move to play and which plan to adopt, players must also make practical decisions about how to use their clock time and whether to use intuition rather than trying to calculate every line to a finish. Viacheslav Eingorn draws upon his vast experience to provide guidance on how to weigh the various factors in positions and decide on the best course of action. He examines many practical examples and explains how the critical decisions were made, and investigates whether they were correct. Lars Bo Hansen
Chess is a game where profound strategic thinking must be allied with clever short-term tactics. Most previous works on strategy focus on specific aspects of chess strategy, but Lars Bo Hansen's aims here are different. He creates a framework in which the various elements can be systematically included and organized - a framework that will help chess-players how to think about chess strategy during practical play. The theory of business strategy is extensively developed, and Hansen adopts the novel approach of investigating whether any of the vast amounts of research and modelling done for business purposes can be applied in chess. He finds that there are indeed many useful parallels, and focuses on how these ideas can be used to good effect by chess-players both in their preparation and when making over-the-board decisions. Author Lars Bo Hansen is a grandmaster from Denmark.

Psychologist and FIDE Master Amatzia Avni is interested in how top players assess positions and how they come up with moves and plans. Here he interviews twelve leading players, including Lev Psakhis, Boris Gelfand and Ilya Smirin, taking them through their most instructive games and asking them to relate the thought processes which occurred during play. In this way the reader gains an insight into what criteria these players take into account when deciding on a move and the factors which influence their decisions. Avni also presents the players with unfamiliar positions and asks them to explain their reactions on encountering these these situations. Again their thought processes are revealed to the reader. In the second part of the book Avni summarises what has been learnt from the players comments, drawing his own conclusions and making recommendations on the subjects of problem solving, planning and thinking which can be used by players of all levels to improve their own game. Zenon Franco
Superb defensive technique is a hallmark of all great chess-players. With a few deft counterstrokes, they not only deflect what looked like an overwhelming offensive, but also expose the darker side of their opponent's build-up. Is this sheer black magic, or are these skills that ordinary players can develop?
While some of the key defensive skills follow well-established principles, modern players ally this with an appreciation of chess dynamics that is a good deal more subtle. Zenon Franco provides a wide-ranging course in how to handle difficult positions, seeking not only to hold them together but to go on the counteroffensive, exploiting to the full the commitments and concessions the opponent has made to launch his attack. The methods he advocates are varied: often a countersacrifice is the key, while simplification can also employed as a subtler, but equally deadly weapon.
Chapters include:
* Lasker, the Master of Defence and Counterattack
* Refuting Premature Attacks
* Fighting Blow by Blow
* Regrouping
* Prophylactic Thinking
* Simplification
Zenon Franco is a grandmaster from Paraguay who now lives in Spain. He is an experienced chess trainer, his most notable pupil being Paco Vallejo, now one of the world's top grandmasters, whom he taught from 1995 to 1999.

John Nunn's annotations emphasise the causes of common errors and how best to exploit them. As may be expected with a collection of short games, sharp opening lines are well represented. Valerie Beim
Chess is fundamentally a dynamic game. Each move changes the situation and the possibilities for both sides. No piece is ever identically as valuable as any other, and their scope changes from move to move. The current generation of super-grandmasters plays unrelentingly dynamic chess, but a great deal of chess literature still deals with chess as if it were a predominantly static game. Much traditional chess teaching is based around rules of thumb that might work well 'on average' or in 'typical' situations, but these rules may not equip players for the specific and sometimes exceptional situations that they face in their games. In this book, Valeri Beim explains how to factor in dynamic considerations, and weigh initiative and time against material and other static factors. Topics include: dynamics, development, the king as a target, breakthrough, and the initiative. This book is a compliment to Beim's previous best-seller Lessons in Chess Strategy which deals with static elements in chess strategy.
Valeri Beim is a grandmaster who lives in Austria. He has won numerous tournaments and plays in the Austrian and German leagues. For many years he was the head trainer at the chess school in Odessa, and he was also the trainer of the Israeli Olympiad team.

These days many chess players use computer software to help them improve their play. By going over one's own games, using a chess playing program, blunders, missed opportunities and alternative moves come to light very quickly. Database software also helps in preparing and updating an opening repertoire with a thoroughness which was impossible a few years ago. And yet computer analysis is not infallible. There are still areas of the game such as long term planning and positional sacrifices where human experience outshines raw calculating power.
This book is an in-depth examination of the differences between human and computer analysis and an attempt to show how best computers can be used in combination with your own mind to improve your ability. It's main sections discuss the relative strengths of computers and humans, methods of using computers for analysis and how to analyse in the opening, middlegame and endgame. The many topics covered include: Schematic thinking; Dynamic play vs. quiet manoeuvring; Fortresses; King Hunts and 'King Drift'; The Problem of Exchanging and Interactive Analysis.The author illustrates his ideas by using example games and positions showing when you should heed the computer's analytical advice and when you simply shouldn't trust it!
Robin Smith is a top-class correspondence chess player, and holds the grandmaster title for correspondence play. He has been USA Correspondence Chess Champion on two occasions and has won a World Correspondence Chess Championship semi-final.

In this series of 75 tests, based on the author's and other grandmasters' games the reader is given the opening moves of each game, followed by a diagrammed position, and invited to choose, from three tempting plans, how they would continue if confronted with that position. Detailed solutions with the rest of the moves in the game and the pros and cons of each alternative plan are given at the end of the book. The tests are of varying difficulty and the book is aimed at players rated between ELO 1500-2200 (ECF 115-200). Being forced to think about unfamiliar positions in the way this book encourages is an excellent way of improving one's analytical powers and concentration.

Maurice Ashley
Counting on the reader having a knowledge of only the basic rules of chess, Maurice Ashley introduces the reader to the fundamentals of chess tactics. He brings the pieces to life by examining their innate characteristics and shows how their powers can be put to use to win opponents' pieces or give checkmate. In part one of the book Ashley teaches the seven basic tactical skills which you need to master, using diagrammed examples throughout together with exercises at the end of each chapter. Part two, "The Fabulous Five", is a walkthrough of five of the most celebrated tactical games in chess history which show the basic tactical skills in action.
The book is written in chess teacher Maurice Ashley's inspirational style. He explains: "the approach is unique because it is basically me: the way I teach, the way I talk about chess, the way I think. You'll find my love for the martial art aikido in these pages, as well as my ridiculous love for sports, story-telling and teaching." But his approach is not just entertaining: teams under Ashley's guidance have won nine national junior championships. His charismatic teaching methods are the stuff of legend - and are to be the subject of a movie. This book makes his ideas and material available to all: teachers and students alike.
He has been called the Tiger Woods of chess. In 1999, Maurice Ashley became the first African-American to qualify for the elite Grandmaster title, an achievement that was widely reported in the international media, including Time magazine, USA Today, New York Times, Sports Illustrated and The Times (London). Ashley is one of the highest-profile figures in American chess, and has commentated on the game for ESPN and Channel Four Television (UK). He sees chess as playing a role in helping at-risk youth, and has coached a number of junior teams to victory in national championships, most famously the Raging Rooks of Harlem, whose achievement is to be the subject of an HBO movie. In 2003 he was named Grandmaster of the Year by the US Chess Federation.

There are ten recommendations for Black and one for White in this worthy addition to the "Dangerous Weapons" and "Secrets of Opening Surprises" genre, including the St George Defence, Albin Countergambit, Chigorin Defence and new ideas in the French, Alekhine and Scandinavian defences.
Using key illustrative games (many previously unpublished), the authors present a host of surprising and accessible opening ideas. Never refuted, these openings have numbered World Champions among their victims.
Grandmaster Alexander Raetsky and International Master Maxim Chetverik have collaborated on many opening books. Their previous works have featured excellent, clear explanations of the ideas behind the chess openings, and have given them a worldwide reputation as top authors.

James Plaskett
GM Jim Plaskett explains how to play the Queen's Bishop Attack (or Pseudo Trompovsky) 1.d4,d5; 2.Bg5. This is an ideal weapon for enterprising players as it cuts out most of Black's opening theory from the outset. The material is presented via complete, annotated games with the emphasis on understanding key strategies rather than offering a comprehensive analysis of the opening. Chapters include First Moves (the basics of the opening), Heroes and Zeroes, (some stars of the QBA in action and falling over), Strategy in the Queen's Bishop Attack, Tricks and Traps and What's Hot (what the world's elite are currently playing). Entertaining stuff from the 1990 British champion which contains enough material to enable club and tournament players to take up the opening in serious play.

Sverre Johnsen & Leif Johannessen
This book is a complete guide to handling the black side of the Lopez, based principally around the Zaitsev Variation, upon which Anatoly Karpov relied during much of his career. This line leads to sharp play, often in open battles where Black gains active counterplay and challenges White to seize the initiative on the kingside. The authors explain in detail how Black can weather the storm. They also explain how Black can handle the practical problem of the Ng5 repetition, and recommend reliable procedures against White's other options in the Lopez, starting off with the Exchange Variation, and moving on to a variety of closed systems.
The book is in four parts: the introduction explains some fundamental tactics and strategies in the Lopez, part two is an analysis of the Zaitsev System, part three looks at White's eight and ninth move alternatives and part four examines exhange and delayed exchange Lopez systems. Throughout, the emphasis is on what readers actually need to know and understand in order to play the opening successfully in practice. There is a great deal of explanation of important ideas, and the authors take pains to guide their readers away from potential pitfalls.
Sverre Johnsen is a FIDE-rated player from Norway. He is an enthusiastic chess analyst, researcher and writer. Leif Johannessen is a young grandmaster, also from Norway. The quality of his opening preparation is shown by the fact that he won the prize for most important theoretical novelty in Informator 92.

Drazen Marovic
The three elements which characterize the balance of power in a chess game are material, space and time. The ability to convert an advantage in one element into an advantage in another when necessary is a skill possessed by all great players but one which amateurs find very difficult to master. In this wide-ranging text, filled with examples from tournament play, experienced trainer Drazen Marovic discusses all aspects of chess transformations, enabling readers to sense when they are necessary, and to decide how to bring them about. This understanding will also help them to frustrate their opponents' plans, and put up a resilient defence in difficult positions. Topics include: pseudo-sacrifices, sacrificial risks, real sacrifices, counter-sacrifices, development advantage, overextension, and simplification.Drazen Marovic is a grandmaster from Croatia with a wealth of experience as a writer, editor and television commentator on chess.

Drazen Marovic
This is a book about the strengths and weaknesses of each chess piece and also about recognising strong and weak squares and areas on the board. It's not a new theme but one which Marovic finds that most amateur players consistently under-estimate in their own games, preferring to incur serious weaknesses in the off-chance of an attack. Through a series of examples from the games of leading players the author shows how to recognise what is and what is not a weakness and how to use each piece most effectively. His purpose is to make the reader aware of this topic and able to achieve greater clarity of thought in an actual game. Chapters include: Part 1 - Weak and Strong Squares, Strength and Weakness on Files and Diagonals, Weakness of the First and Second Ranks, Outposts, Static Weakness and Attack, Part 2 - The King, The Queen, The Rook, Minor Pieces.

This book is a detailed examination of variations in which White puts his bishop on c4, often as a prelude to a violent sacrificial attack. The Sozin Attack can be played against the Classical Sicilian, Najdorf or even the Scheveningen. This book examines all these options in four parts: 6.Bc4 Scheveningen, Fischer Attack, Sozin & Velimirovic Attack and Anti-Sozin Lines. All the latest theory is included in these, often wild, attacking systems. Mikhail Golubev is a Ukranian Grandmaster who specialises in sharp systems. His Easy Guide to the Dragon has been praised for it's original analysis.

Rook and pawn endings are the most commonly occurring type of ending and so some practical knowledge of them is useful for players at all levels. This re-issue of John Emms guide, originally published in 1999, concentrates on typical examples of rook endings taken from real game examples. The book is divided into four parts; Basic Rook Endings (Rook v pawn, rook & pawn v rook), Rook and Pawn Endings (pawns on one side of the board), Rook and Pawn Endings (pawns on both sides of the board) and Double Rook Endings. The author explains the key ideas, knowledge of which will save you valuable time in match play, and finishes each section with test positions to check your progress. The System is an ambitious book which attempts to develop a strategy for playing chess openings applicable to all opening systems. The author firmly believes that 1.d4 is White's "correct" opening move and that he has refuted several of Black's popular defences by applying System principles. The System is about integrating board control and development into a coherent whole. This is a thought provoking book with many practical examples!
Hans Berliner is one of the most successful correspondence chess players of all time, and was utterly dominant in the 5th World Championship.

Alfonso Romero & Amador Gonzalez
Success in chess is often dependant on making the correct decision at pivotal moments in the game. For this, both accurate calculation and a feel for the position are necessary. In this book the authors present 90 test positions, each set at a key point during a Grandmaster game. You have a multiple choice question to answer in each case, selecting one continuation from amongst several plausible possibilities. Do you seek an active plan to profit from our strengths and highlight the opponent's weaknesses? Or do you adopt prophylaxis, attending to our own position's shortcomings and hindering the opponent's plans? Alternatively, are there any ready-made plans that you know from other games that can be tailored to fit your position? In detailed solutions, the authors explain the best solution, and why other possibilities are less convincing. You can develop a feel for how the decision is made, while painlessly building your 'repertoire' of plans in typical positions.
All the examples in this book arise from Queen's Pawn or Flank Openings, and are arranged by opening and level of difficulty. Many are drawn from games by virtuoso strategists such as Karpov and Petrosian. In all cases the complete game is given with annotations so the consequences of the critical decision can be seen.
Grandmaster Alfonso Romero comes from Spain and was runner-up in the 1984/5 European Junior Championship. He has represented his country in several Olympiads, winning an individual bronze medal at the 2002 event. Amador Gonzalez de la Nava is a FIDE Master. He is also from Spain, and is a chess teacher and writer.

James Rizzitano
After a 14 year break from chess to pursue his career, IM James Rizzitano wanted to make a comeback. He realized that he didn't have the time to study chess full time and so resolved to make a thorough review of his games from earlier years in order to re-acquaint himself with his own strengths and weaknesses. He recommends this approach for any amateur player and here he shares the results of his self analysis with the reader and draws his own conclusions about opening selection, dealing with novelties, risk management, keeping the initiative and facing stronger players amongst other topics. He includes 64 of his own games (plus eleven by other players), each illustrating a key lesson, which he has annotated in depth. He also analyzes 20 instructive endgames, pointing out that most players will have more games involving a rook ending than a particular opening system. James Rizzitano is an International Master from New England, USA whose opponents in this book include many IMs and GMs from the USA and Europe.
