Robert H Jones
A History of the Paignton Chess Congress
In this well researched book Bob Jones looks, from several different angles, at the sixty year history of the Paignton Chess Congress, which is probably unique in having been held annually in the same room at Oldway Mansion, the magnificent ballroom where Isidora Duncan once performed.
Firstly there is the story of the event itself, from it's creation in 1951 to 2010.
Jones also draws thumbnail sketches of ten remarkable personalities, some well-known and some forgotten, who have acted out roles of varying significance at the congress.
There are 60 games to play through, many either annotated by famous players or hitherto unpublished.
The book includes a chapter on the remarkable Singer family and the 200 year story of how their magnificent home became the venue of this event.
The story is illustrated throughout with 80 pictures, of which 8 are in full colour, and 27 charts and cross-tables.
Bob Jones has been actively involved in devon chess for 50 years. He writes on chess for the Western Morning News and co-wrote, with Owen Hindle, the definitive biography of the first British Champion, Cecil de Vere.
Published 2010, softback, 156 pages.

Mikhail Botvinnik
Three World Chess Championship Matches: 1954, 1957, 1958.
The three hard-fought matches for the World Championship between Mikhail Botvinnik and Vasily Smyslov appear together in a single book for the first time. The matches resulted in one match win for each player with a drawn match in 1954. The games from the 1954 and 1958 matches are annotated by Botvinnik whilst the games from the 1957 match are annotated by contemporary masters such as Ragozin, Tolush, Aronin and Lilienthal. No complete book on the 1957 match ever appeared in Russian language. In addition, the contents of Botvinnik's notebooks, containing his opening preparation, from the 1957 and 1958 matches are reproduced here in what is a fascinating account of top-level chess at the height of Soviet domination of the chess world. The book has been compiled and edited by Igor Botvinnik, nephew of Mikhail, and translation from the Russian is by Steve Giddins.

Mikhail Tal
Tal's classic account of his World Championship win is one of the great books of chess literature. The match itself was one of the most memorable, pitting Tal's tactical ingenuity against Botvinnik's iron logic. All 21 games are brought to life by Tal's annotations which come from an era before today's symbols and hieroglyphs were invented. Also included are the 23 other games that these two played but without annotations.

Mikhail Botvinnik
In this 1961 re-match for the World championship Mikhail Botvinnik surprised the chess world by regaining his title from the young champion Mikhail Tal. In contrast to the previous year's match Tal's tactical style was rendered ineffective by Botvinnik's solid, positional play and choice of openings. This book contains all 21 games from the match with annotations by Botvinnik, Sveshnikov, Kotov, Smyslov, Ragozin and Tolush. It also includes Botvinnik's opening analysis for both matches, his thoughts on Tal and the match in general and Botvinnik's post match press conference. An excellent record of a fascinating match.

Jan Timman
The 1962 Candidates' Tournament in Curacao was one of the most controversial chess events of all time. At the height of the Cold War, eight players contested the right to challenge World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. The format of the tournament was a gruelling quadruple round-robin. Twenty-eight games were to be played on the tropical island, in a contest that lasted two months.
The air trembled with drama and intrigue. One of the favourites, the brilliant Mikhail Tal, was taken to hospital after 21 rounds and had to withdraw. Three other players from the Soviet Union, Keres, Petrosian, and Geller, were making suspiciously short draws when playing each other. The two American players came to blows over the services of the second they were supposed to share. Bella Korchnoi, whose husband took an early lead in the tournament, was a puppet in the hands of the scheming Rona Petrosian, the wife of the later winner. And one of the favourites was a lanky 19-year-old boy from Brooklyn, Bobby Fischer, who openly accused the Soviets of collusion and was later proven right.
In the end, Tigran Petrosian was the winner and went on to become the new World Champion the following year. But such was the impact of Fischer’s accusations that this was the last time such a battle was organised. Henceforth the challenger to the highest crown was determined in a series of matches. Curacao 1962 was the last Candidates' Tournament.
In Curacao 1962, Jan Timman returns to this clash of giants and takes a fresh look at the games. Timman describes the course of the tournament and annotates the most important games (including 16 of Fischer's!) in his usual lucid and instructive style. A 22 page introduction, complete with photographs, describes the players and the events in which they participated at Curacao and then Timman annotates many of the games in a manner which brings to mind the great tournament books of the past. A beautifully produced and written work.

Mikhail Botvinnik
The 1963 World Championship match marked the end of Mikhail Botvinnik's fifteen year reign as champion. In a tense, evenly contested, match Botvinnik was eventually defeated by his younger opponent Tigran Petrosian.
This gripping account of the match includes all the games, with annotations by Botvinnik, Petrosian, Akopian, Kasparov and other Soviet Grandmasters. Both players also give their written account of the match. Botvinnik's revealing essay "Why I lost the match" is counterbalanced by Petrosian's analysis of his win, which is also included in this important historical document
In addition the book contains the games of the Botvinnik-Furman training match from early 1963, all other Botvinnik-Petrosian games and analysis from Botvinnik's final notebook. A fascinating and highly instructive report.

The acclaimed classic 'Fischer World Champion!' conveys the full drama of the 1972 Fischer-Spassky clash, both on and off the board. Finally available in an English edition, it is a blow-by-blow account of the perplexing prelude to the match by the late Max Euwe, the then FIDE President. 'Fischer World Champion!' features the original analyses of the games by Jan Timman.
The match of the Century electrified the world. Chess was front page news everywhere. No one wanted to miss a word, a move or even the slightest detail about the struggle of Bobby Fischer against the terrifying superpower that for decades had exploited its superiority in chess as an irrefutable justification of communism. Bobby was handsome but lonely, brilliant but strange.
The world looked on in anxiety and anticipation as Bobby quarrelled about the venue, the number of games, the prize-fund, the television rights, the cameras, the lighting, the chairs. Read all about it here together with GM Jan Timman's annotations to all 21 match games plus photos from the event. This new edition commemorates the death of Fischer in January 2008 with a tribute by former World Champion Garry Kasparov and an essay by Jan Timman on the life and chess of Bobby Fischer.

Garry Kasparov
Between 1984 and 1990 Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov contested five long matches for the World Championship. This fourth volume of the series "Garry Kasparov on Modern Chess" concentrates on all the games played between the two from 1988 to the present day and features their fifth World Championship match played in New York and Lyons 1990.
As usual Kasparov combines in-depth analysis of the games with commentary on the politics and personalities of the time.
The period after 1990 was also a fascinating one in the chess world as it witnessed the emergence of a new generation of young grandmasters capable of challenging the supremacy of the "two Ks". Between them these two greats had dominated the chess landscape for the previous two decades and it has seemed unthinkable that a major tournament could be won by a different player. Now, however, grandmasters such as Viswanathan Anand, Vassily Ivanchuk, Nigel Short, Boris Gelfand, Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov arrived on the scene and proved themselves capable of competing successfully at the very highest levels.
This period also witnessed an increasing disatisfaction amongst the world elite with the traditional ruling body, FIDE (the World Chess Federation). This led to attempts by the leading grandmasters to organise the World Championship cycle outside of FIDE’s jurisdiction. In the late 1980s the Grandmasters Assocation (GMA) was created and was responsible for the organisation of the World Cup - a tournament championship of the world's leading chess players. Another organisation, the Professional Chessplayers Association (PCA) followed in 1993.
In this volume Garry Kasparov (world champion between 1985 and 2000 and generally regarded as the greatest player ever) analyses in depth all the games and matches he played against his great rival Anatoly Karpov from 1988 to the present day. Kasparov was personally involved in the creation of both the GMA and PCA and gives a fascinating insight into this important time in chess history.

Alik Gershon & Igor Nor
This book of the official FIDE World Championship of 2005 does justice to an extremely strong event. Printed on gloss paper throughout, with plenty of colour photos of the event and scenery and all the games annotated by the authors, this is a tournament book of equal quality to the great tournament books of the past. The event was won by Veselin Topalov in convincing fashion, provoking unfounded accusations of "computer assistance", which subsequent performances have refuted. Authors, Israeli GM Alik Gershon and trainer Igor Nor analyse all the games from the tournament and explain the ideas behind the moves. Contents: Introduction; Round 1; Round 2; Round 3; Round 4; Round 5; Round 6; Round 7; Half Way Report; Round 8; Round 9; Round 10; Round 11; Round 12; Round 13; Round 14; Tournament table of Second half; Afterword; Full Tournament Tables; Postscript; Index.
Published 2007, softback, 442 pages.

Veselin Topalov & Zhivko Ginchev
It is unusual to find a book on a World Championship match written by the loser. Nevertheless here are Veselin Topalov's thoughts on the 2006 Championship match, held in Elista, which resulted in victory for his opponent Vladimir Kramnik. Topalov begins with his own view of the history of the World Chess Championship, Kasparov, FIDE, Kirsan and Kramnik before moving onto the 2006 match. Here, in addition to annotating the games and providing background material, he gives his take on "toiletgate" and includes post game interviews and photos from the match. This is a well written and presented book in which Topalov expresses his opinions very clearly.
Published 2007, softback, 220 pages.

Raymond Keene
The match between Kramnik and Topalov in 2006 finally reunified the World Chess championship after Kasparov and short's breakaway from FIDE for their 1993 match. The agreed next step in the world championship reunification process was a match-tournament, to give other leading contenders a chance, before the title reverts to a match format in 2008. For this book of the Mexico City 2007 World Championship tournament, Julian Simpole was the eye-witness at the event, recording the player's comments and reactions after each game. Annotations to the games have been provided by experienced chess author Steve Giddins whilst other commentary and a brief history of the World Chess Championship has been added by Grandmaster Ray Keene. The super-strong, eight player tournament ended in victory for Indian Grandmaster Vishy Anand who was crowned World Champion.
Published 2007, softback, 212 pages.

Aleksandar Matanovic (Ed)
The Greatest Tournaments 2001-2009 presents a selection of games from eighty-six of the strongest tournaments played during the last decade, selected by following criteria:
* they were round-robin tournaments
* a normal time-control was used
* there was a minimum number of six participants
* it was Category 17 (or higher)
The tournaments are presented in chronological order. Along with a crosstable of the event, each tournament is represented by
* the best game of the tournament winner
* the best game played at the tournament
* the game with the most important theoretical novelty
There is also a selection of game fragments, the most beautiful combinations and endings. The games have languageless, Informator-style annotations and diagrams at key moments.
There are three statistical tables given at the end of the book. The first has tournament category statistics, the second table contains the tournament winner statistics and the third table provides statistics on all the tournament participants.
During the period 2001-2004, only twenty Category 17 (or higher) tournaments were organized. In the following four-year period, 2005-2008, there were forty-nine of them. An increase of almost 150%. The most fruitful year was 2009, with seventeen tournaments of the highest category.
