Jimmy Adams (Editor & translator)
This is a translation of a Russian book of the tournament which appeared in 1927. It contains all 210 games, many with the players own annotations, together with some additional background material added for this edition such as an openings survey and an article by Alekhine on the Meran Defence. The tournament was very strong, featuring Alekhine, Rubinstein, Nimzowitsch, Tartakower and Marshall amongst the 21 players. It also resulted in some very high quality play, especially from the winner, Alekhine.
pub. 1991, hardback, 382 pages.

Robert Sherwood
A round by round account of both these U.S. tournaments with annotations to all the games as well as diagrams, some photos, tournament crosstables and indexes of openings. The lesser known Chicago event was a closely fought affair with Marshall triumphing by half a point from Torre and Maroczy in a field of 13 players. The outcome at Lake Hopatcong was never really in doubt with Capablanca winning the five player, double-round event at a canter from Kupchik and Maroczy. This well presented book does justice to both events and includes a brief description of the background to each in the introduction.

Ken Whyld
Author Whyld has been trying to assemble all the games from this event for over 40 years. He has managed to trace about 60% of them and now, feeling he has achieved as much as he can, has published them in this book in the hope of inspiring younger generations to continue the search. The book contains an introduction describing the beginning of the Chess Olympiad idea and it's development and the results, team and individual from this event. There are about 280 games in all together with indexes of openings and players.

Robert Sherwood, Dale Brandreth & Bruce Monson
The Pasadena tournament came about as a result of chess organisers in California desire to hold an international tournament coinciding with World Champion Dr Alekhine's world tour. It was hoped that Capablanca would play but, as described in the book, this did not come about and Alekhine was joined by the USA's leading players including Kashdan, Dake and Reshevsky.
All available game scores are included (54 out of 66), together with annotations and background information from a variety of sources. The tournament was won by Alekhine from Kashdan.
The book also includes a report on the Pasadena Women's tournament (although no games) and articles on Mary Baines and LaVieve Hines, America's strongest woman player of the time but now almost unknown.

Alexander Alekhine
A new, algebraic ecition of a classic book, featuring a round-by-round account of the tournament and penetrating analysis of each game by the then ex-World Champion Alexander Alekhine. Nottingham 1936 was a tremendously strong tournament, featuring four World Champions (Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine & Euwe) as well as players of the strength of Botvinnik, Reshevsky, Fine and Flohr. In total the event featured fifteen players and was won jointly by Capablanca and Botvinnik. This book includes a tournament cross-table and indexes of players and openings. Alexander Alekhine was World Champion from 1927 to 1935 and from 1937 to 1946. He was a renowned author, noted for both his bluntness and the quality of his annotations.

Robert Sherwood & Dale Brandreth
The AVRO tournament of 1938 was designed to find a challenger to Alexander Alekhine, the reigning World Champion. It was also an attempt to set up a valid system for selecting a challenger in future years, rather than allowing the champion to dictate his own terms.
With this in mind eight of the world's strongest players, including Alekhine, took part. The field comprised Alekhine, Keres, Fine, Botvinnik, Euwe, Capablanca, Reshevsky and Flohr in a double round all-play-all which was eventually won jointly by Keres and Fine.
The outbreak of war the following year, followed by Alekhine's death in 1946, meant that neither Keres nor Fine ever had chance to play a match against Alekhine for his title.
This book of the tournament includes background material on all the players and round-by-round commentary on the tournament itself. Every game is included and annotated with both contemporary comments and analysis from the Rybka chess engine. The authors have drawn together the best parts of previously published books and articles on the tournament and unearthed new material from Dutch newspaper columns and from the Royal Dutch Library.
Published 2010, hardback, 204 pages.

This was the first of what were intended to be biennial events to discover Euope's strongest player. Two sections allowed for promotion and relegation. The tournament was submerged in the turmoil of war and has never been published in full before. By searching through magazines of the time the editor has managed to re-discover 65 games out of the 66 in the top group (Alekhine, Bogoljubow, Keres, Junge, Barcza, Stoltz, Foltys, etc) together with a huge quantity of notes written by leading players. In addition there are 62 of the 66 games from the second group, with notes where available. The book also includes 23 pages of introduction in German and English, 98 diagrams; player index and openings index.
