Alexander Khalifman
Volume five in the series is devoted to more obscure Black defences to 1.e4. Part one examines 1..a6; and 1..b6; part two analyses the Nimzowitsch Defence 1..Nc6. Part three is devoted to Alekhine's Defence 1..Nf6; whilst part four considers 1.e4,e6; 2.d4, where Black does not play 2..d5. As usual the fourteenth World Champion Alexander Khalifman offers a repertoire for White based on his own analysis (the praxis of Anand being very limited in these rare openings) and offers his own conclusions at the end of each of the sixteen chapters. This book maintains the standard set in what is an excellent series.
Published 2005, softback, 255 pages.

Matthias Wahls, Karsten Muller & Hannes Langrock
This book is the long-awaited updated and expanded translation of a German bestseller considered by many to be the best book ever on the Scandinavian 3..Qa5.
It focuses not on theoretical lines but on the structural ideas and differing central pawn formations after the moves 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qa5.
Some key topics covered include:
What are the basic ideas in the Scandinavian?
How do pawn structures dictate plans of attack?
Which tactical motifs can be expected in certain typical positions?
Through text explanation and analysis of a large number of key games the authors demonstrate the strategies and tactics available to both sides in this popular opening.
The Scandinavian Defence is frequently played at club and tournament level because Black can force White into it on move 2 and hope to dictate the nature of the game. The book is accessible for players completely new to this opening.
Published 2011, softback, 368 pages.

John Emms
This updated edition of Emms 1997 best seller is overdue because of the explosion in popularity of the Scandinavian since 1997. The Scandinavian 1.e4,d5 is popular at club and tournament level because White has no way of avoiding it after 1.e4 and it leads to an essentially sound game for Black. Here via 72 complete, annotated games GM Emms takes us through all the sub-variations of the Scandinavian. The book has two main parts, 2..Qxd5 and 2.. Nf6 and offers coverage of all the main lines as well as the Icelandic Gambit, Portuguese Variation and the Scandinavian Gambit. John Emms is an English Grandmaster.

Jovanka Houska
The Scandinavian (or Centre Counter - 1.e4,d5;) has always been popular at club level because it is a "move one" opening in which Black is "on his own turf" immediately and because it is relatively easy to play - in the majority of lines Black relies upon the same system of development. One further attraction is that it can lead to both tactical and positional play - there is something to suit all styles of player. Women's Grandmaster Jovanka Houska has successfully played the Scandinavian, and in this book she demonstrates how to play the main systems of play for both White and Black using a combination of text and 71 annotated games. Although she believes in the Scandinavian as a fully viable defence for Black she also explains White's most important strategies and points out his best lines of play
The Starting Out series books are distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, lucid explanations of the fundamentals, and an abundance of notes, tips and warnings to help the reader absorb vital ideas. Starting Out books are aimed at club and tournament players who have little experience of the openings in question but who wish to try them in their own games.
In 2006 Jovanka Houska won the English Chess Federation Player of the Year award, the first time a female chess player had received this prestigious recognition. Highlights of her career so far include winning the European Girls Junior Championship, representing the English team at numerous Chess Olympiads and qualifying for the 2006 Women's World Championship. She holds the Women's Grandmaster title.
Published 2009, softback, 320 pages.

Michael Melts
1.e4,d5; 2.exd5,Qxd5; 3.Nc3,Qd6!? is a rare bird in tournament play as many players fear that the queen can be easily attacked by Bf4 or Nb5. However, in the extensive analysis contained here, Correspondence I.M. Melts demonstrates that 3..Qd6 is a viable, and sometimes venomous, alternative to 3..Qa5 and 3..Qd8. The six main sections of this book, each examining a different White set-up, contain analysis, hundreds of game fragments and 40 complete games in the line. A very thorough book with enough information to make the 3..Qd6 Scandinavian your main defence to 1.e4.

Michael Melts
In 2001 the original edition of this book became a best-seller as it showed how 3..Qd6; could be a viable and dangerous alternative to the usual 3..Qa5; in the Scandinavian. Since 2001 the 3..Qd6; Scandinavian has been taken up by players at all levels, including Grandmasters such as Tiviakov, Nisipeanu, Ye Jiangchuan, Dreev and others. It has proved a completely reliable defence, even against players rated 2600+.
For this new edition the author has included large amounts of new analysis and updated most of the 40 key games that are used to illustrate the theory of the 3..Qd6; Scandinavian. There are six main parts to this book: Part 1) an introduction showing typical plans as well as opening disasters which should be avoided by both sides. Parts 2-6) Analysis of the main continuations (after 1.e4,d5; 2.exd5,Qxd5; 3.Nc3,Qd6;), including 4.d4,Nf6; and alternatives for both White and Black on moves 4 and 5. Hundreds of game fragments and 40 complete games are included in the analysis, making this a comprehensive and up-to-date manual on this opening. Includes an index of complete games and bibliography. Michael Melts is an ICCF International Master.
Published 2009, softback, 301 pages.
