A famous book which, in fact, contains 60 complete Capablanca games although the explanation and analysis is concentrated in the endgame phase. Bernd Rosen
This is an endgame manual with a difference as it is based on a training course used by the author to teach various clubs and organisations in Germany. As soon as a topic has been introduced and a few basic ideas discussed, you are immediately invited to immerse yourself in the subject by solving a series of relevant positions. The solutions to these positions feature a wealth of practical advice and further discussion of endgame principles and the key theoretical points. All the main types of endgames are covered in 15 sections: pawn endings, minor-piece endings, rook endings and queen endings. Rosen discusses important elements in endgame strategy, such as pawn-structure, passed pawns, space advantage, breakthrough and Zugzwang. Endgames are often highly tactical, and this is reflected throughout this book in exercises that require precise calculation, and in sections devoted to typical tactical themes. There is a wealth of exercises throughout the book.

Ian Snape
Ian Snape is a strong club player and correspondence chess International Master. He has produced this book with the aim of improving the endgame strength of other amateur players who don't have the time or inclination to remember massive amounts of complex theory. With that in mind he concentrates here on endgames which occur frequently in practice, which can be explained in terms of concepts and plans rather than long calculations and in which the scope for improvement is greatest. So, for example, in the section on basic checkmates he deals only with B&NvK, QvR, RvB, RvN and R&BvR and not with the really simple checkmates. In all chapters the emphasis is on key techniques and on highlighting the most common mistakes made in practice. The second half of the book features 100 diagrammed exercises, with solutions, all taken from real games. This should be a very useful handbook for tournament and club players rated under 2000 (175BCF) although there may be stronger players around who need to brush up their technique!

Neil McDonald
This pocket-sized companion to Concise Chess Openings provides you with the basic theory of pawn, rook, minor piece and queen endgames as well as showing real-game examples of how to attack and defend in these endings. Chapters five and six offer sound practical advice on Winning Complex Endgames and Saving Difficult Endgames involving ideas about key pieces and their activity, exchanging and pushing pawns, counterplay, control of the clock and schematic thinking. The final chapter focuses on, relatively rare, pawnless endgames; some familiarity with which is necessary in these days of quickplay finishes. The book is aimed at the average club or tournament player who wants a one-volume tutorial emphasising the practical but including key theoretical positions.

Mark Dvoretsky
Renowned Russian chess coach and author Mark Dvoretsky has written what is surely destined to be a standard treatise on endgames for many years to come. He provides, in fifteen chapters, all the important information which you need in order to understand these endgame types with their various material imbalances. Key positions and ideas, which must be learned, are printed in blue with additional material and further examples in black, making it easy for the reader to grasp the essentials of any endgame quickly.
Dvoretsky manages to combine clarity in explaining the strategy of each ending with accuracy in his deep analysis of some positions, often overturning the previous analysis of other strong players. There are chapters on: Pawn, Knight v Pawns, Knight, Bishop v Pawns, Opposite Colour Bishops, Same Colour Bishops, Knight v Bishop, Rook v Pawns, Rook, Rook v Knight, Rook v Bishop, Queen & Queen v Rook endings. The final two chapters cover other material imbalances and General Endgame Ideas. Each chapter ends with a set of diagrammed exercises the solutions to which are in the final chapter of the book.
For the second edition the author re-worked the section on rook endings in the light of recent discoveries. He also made corrections throughout where necessary.
Mark Dvoretsky has continued to re-examine and re-work the material. The result is this revised and updated third edition. Not only working independently, but also with the help of attentive readers, masters and grandmasters, the author's efforts have resulted in what can only be described as the definitive work on endgame theory and practice.
"This book is Dvoretsky's most significant book." - I.M. Jacob Aagaard.
3rd edition published 2011, softback, 408 pages.

Karsten Muller & Frank Lamprecht
BCF BOOK OF THE YEAR 2002!
This is a major event in chess publishing. Two German endgame experts have produced a masterly one-volume encyclopaedia which covers all major endgames. It supersedes all previous works of this type by being far more accurate and readable. With new time-controls meaning that competitive games are played to a finish, it is especially important that chess-players understand the main endgame principles, so this is no dry reference work; throughout the book, the authors emphasize the practical elements of endgame play: principles, rules of thumb and thinking methods. They have also provided a feast of detailed analysis for those looking to study the endgame in depth. The book offers many practical examples showing how to play key positions of varying difficulty

Steve Giddins
Although the endgame seems a long way off at the start of a game, World Champions such as Capablanca and Smyslov have recommended that up-and-coming players should actually begin by studying the endgame first. This is because only by studying simplified positions can one fully develop an understanding of how chess pieces work - both in isolation and with each other. A knowledge of the endgame is also of great help earlier in the game, enabling you to know what to aim for and what to avoid in the middlegame.
In this instructive and entertaining book, renowned endgame expert Steve Giddins selects 50 of the finest examples of endgame play in the history of chess. Through the medium of these 50 example games you can study different types of endgame and see how they have been played by the world's greatest players. Most of the selected endgames are taken from before the 1980s when time controls and use of adjournments meant that players had more time to study the final phase of the game in depth and produce some masterpieces of endgame play.
Giddins examines each example in great detail and uses them to explain the principles of endgame play. This book is full of essential guidelines and tips which all players should follow if they want to improve their endgame knowledge.
Steve Giddins is a FIDE Master and a former editor of British Chess Magazine. He is the author of several outstanding books and is well known for his clarity and no-nonsense advice.

Karsten Muller & Wolfgang Pajeken
In this companion volume to Fundamental Chess Endings, Muller and Pajeken focus on the practical side of playing endgames. They cover all aspects of strategic endgames, with particular emphasis on thinking methods, and ways to create difficulties for opponents over the board.
Using hundreds of outstanding examples from modern practice, the authors explain not only how to conduct 'classical' endgame tasks, such as exploiting an extra pawn or more active pieces, but also how to handle the extremely unbalanced endings that often arise from the dynamic openings favoured nowadays. All varieties of endgames are covered, and there are more than 200 exercises for the reader, together with full solutions.
Major topics include:
* Basic Principles and Methods
* Activity
* Schematic Thinking
* The Fight for the Initiative
* Prophylaxis and Preventing Counterplay
* The Bishop-Pair in the Endgame
* Domination
* The Art of Defence
* Typical Mistakes
* Rules of Thumb
Grandmaster Karsten Muller is a world-renowned expert on all aspects of endgame play. He is co-author (with Frank Lamprecht) of the acclaimed Secrets of Pawn Endings and Fundamental Chess Endings. He finished third in the German Championship in 1996, and was runner-up in 1997. Wolfgang Pajeken is a FIDE Master from Hamburg who plays frequently in the German Bundesliga, and other team and individual championships. He is also a chess trainer, organizer and arbiter.

John Nunn
John Nunn's two volume work "Nunn's Chess Endings Volumes 1 & 2" has won the ECF Book of the Year 2011 award.
In this major two-volume work, renowned endgame theoretician John Nunn teaches the skills that are most important to success in practical endgames. Dr Nunn shows how to apply knowledge of standard endgames to find the right methods in tricky real-life practical situations - even when they differ greatly from the idealized forms given by traditional endgame manuals. This is done by putting the emphasis on methods of play rather than exact material balance. In this way, key endgame ideas can be learnt.
This matters because lack of familiarity with key ideas can cause important ideas and themes to be missed even by very strong players. Even more importantly, we discover that a staggering amount of previously published endgame analysis is simply wrong, and that many of the standard guidelines are at best partially true.
This first volume covers general topics and discusses in detail pawn endings, queen endings and minor-piece endings. Volume two will cover all endings involving rooks.
* Identifies new and important motifs which occur repeatedly in over-the-board play
* Tactical elements are heavily featured
* In many examples, previous analysis is corrected
* Focuses on endgames that are susceptible to concrete analysis
* Geared to the over-the-board player - no composed or artificial positions
* Ideas underlying analysis - however complex - are richly explained in words
Dr John Nunn is one of the best-respected figures in world chess. He was among the world's leading grandmasters for nearly twenty years, winning four gold medals in chess Olympiads and finishing sixth overall in the World Cup in 1989. He is a much-acclaimed writer, whose works have won 'Book of the Year' awards in several countries. In both 2004 and 2007 Nunn was crowned World Chess Solving Champion, ahead of many former champions.

John Nunn
John Nunn's two volume work "Nunn's Chess Endings Volumes 1 & 2" has won the ECF Book of the Year 2011 award.
Nunn's Chess Endings is a practical endgame manual, in two volumes, with an emphasis on methods and techniques in endgames which require precise analysis. A host of example positions, with analysis, illustrate key tactical motifs in these endgame positions, taken from practical play. In each type of endgame Nunn has selected a series of topics which are both important and poorly covered in existing endgame books. Careful study of these topics will produce an improvement in any player's endgame play.
Volume 2 of the series covers rook endings and endings with rooks and minor pieces.
Elementary endgames are not covered in this series and the reader should consult "Understanding Chess Endgames", also by John Nunn, for information on basic endgame theory.

Glenn Flear
In this heavyweight endgame guide Glenn Flear examines the type of endings likely to be reached in practical play, which are hardly ever covered in endgame manuals and which involve both sides having more than one piece each left on the board. Thus he steers clear of endings which have been heavily analysed in many previous books (e.g. rook v rook and pawn) and instead concentrates on endings such as rook and minor piece vs rook and minor piece, rook vs two minor pieces or queen and rook vs queen and rook (all with pawns). His choices are based on the frequency which certain material balances arise in practical play and all the examples he gives are taken from competitive games. The five sections of the book are: Clear Material Advantage, Only Minor Pieces, Asymmetric Struggles (material imbalance), Rook and Minor Pieces and Heavyweight Struggles (queen & piece vs queen & piece). Throughout Flear's aim is to provide instructive examples which, after study, will help the reader in their own games.

Efstratios Grivas
Practical Endgame Play is a comprehensive guide to all fundamental chess endings, and an ideal manual for those looking to improve their endgame play. The five sections of the book explain pawn endings, rook endings, minor piece endings, rook and minor piece endings and queen endings with diagrammed examples used to illustrate each key idea. The emphasis is just as much on practical play as it is on theoretical understanding. Whenever an idea is introduced, Grandmaster Efstratios Grivas immediately illustrates it with instructive diagrammed examples, a considerable number of which are drawn from his own over-the-board experiences.
This is a companion volume to Practical Endgame Play - Beyond the Basics, a work which specializes in more complex positions.NETQUOTEVAR:LINK
Efstratios Grivas is an experienced Grandmaster from Greece who has represented his country on many occasions, winning an individual gold medal at the 1989 European Team Championship and an individual silver medal at the 1998 Chess Olympiad. Lars Bo Hansen
A large proportion of chess games are decided in the endgame or in the transition to the endgame, but chess literature has provided relatively little guidance for players seeking to improve their skill in making the vital decisions in these phases of the game. Building on the ideas introduced in his ground-breaking work Foundations of Chess Strategy, Lars Bo Hansen provides a thought-provoking and convincing treatise on how players can maximize the practical problems for their opponents while emphasizing the strengths of their own position. Under his guidance, chess-players will more easily focus on the key elements in the position, and devise plans for exploiting them to the full, and develop a better understanding of which pieces need to be exchanged, and which weaknesses really matter. Lars Bo Hansen is a well-known grandmaster from Denmark. He has won the Danish Championship on two occasions, and represented his country in four olympiads, winning a bronze medal for his individual performance in 1990.

This book contains 461 diagrammed endgame positions with one side to play and win. Solutions are provided at the end of the book. The endgames all feature an unusual material balance so, in volume 1, we have minor piece or rook vs pawn(s) and rook (and pawns) vs minor piece(s) (and pawns). Examples are taken from Grandmaster play or studies with preference given to more recent games. Unbalanced endgames often reveal some beautiful ideas and show the powers of the pieces and pawns in a way which more equal positions cannot. Author Jozsef Pinter is a Hungarian Grandmaster.

The endgame quizzes in this book are aimed at testing your thinking processes rather than just tactical calculation. So the diagrammed test positions in chapter one pose questions about strategic thinking whilst those in chapter two emphasise more detailed analysis and planning. Questions such as "What should White do now?" or "Does Black have an advantage here?" abound in chapter one whilst chapter 2 has more questions of the type "Find a win for White". Three further chapters test various aspects of your endgame knowledge in increasing order of difficulty. (Basic Endgames, Intermediate Level and Advanced Level) There are 150 tests altogether and full solutions with explanation are provided for each test. This is the kind of book that will get your chess brain working and can be read without needing access to a chess set.

He covers all the main types of endgames and typical thinking methods and so equips readers with the skills needed to excel in this vital phase of the game up to good club level and beyond.
