Monty Crain
The author has been collecting Schlecter games for many years and, whilst he makes no claim to have found them all, this is the largest collection of Schlecter games published so far. The book begins with a brief biography, followed by the games tournament by tournament from Vienna 1893 to Berlin 1918. The games are unannotated but tournament cross tables are included. Also includes Schlecters match games & results and as many off hand games as could be found. A bibliography and index of opponents are present. Karl Schlecter was undoubtably one of the world's best players during this time, narrowly failing to take the World Championship title from Lasker in a famous match in 1910.

Yasser Seirawan
Four-time US Champion Yasser Seirawan provides an engaging account of his games and interactions with the world champions of chess: celebrated figures including Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Bobby Fischer, Boris Spassky, Tigran Petrosian, Mikhail Tal, Vassily Smyslov, Mikhail Botvinnik and Max Euwe.
Having been involved in frequent battles against world champions over a 25 year period, Seirawan is in an ideal position to describe what it's really like staring across the chessboard at a true legend. In this book he covers his most memorable encounters in detail - his famous wins and painful losses against the best players on the planet.
Seirawan's substantial involvement in off-the-board chess activities over the years has also led to much communication and dealings with world champions, and here Seirawan recounts for the first time many stories involving these giants of chess, helping to paint a picture of their personalities and revealing their many different dimensions.
*Instructive and entertaining coverage of games with world champions
*Includes many anecdotes about chess legends as well as the author's own opinions of international chess and it's players and officials
Yasser Seirawan is one of the top-ranked chess players in the USA and was the first American candidate for the World Championship title since Bobby Fischer. He is a four-time U.S Champion, the 1989 Western Hemisphere Champion and a ten-time member of the U.S Chess Olympiad team. His achievements distinguish him as one of only a handful of players to defeat world champions Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov in tournament play.

John Hilbert
Walter Penn Shipley was crucial to the development of chess in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His contributions were very great. He organized correspondence chess in the United States in the 1890s, became a talented player and dangerous opponent, and a friend and supporter of world champions and contenders. He served as the treasurer of the Franklin Chess Club in Philadelphia and later as the club’s president at the height of its power and prestige. This work is a complete biography and games collection of Walter Penn Shipley. It draws from such original documents as personal correspondence with great chess players of his era (Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Pillsbury and others), detailed Shipley family records, and extensive research conducted in contemporary newspapers, journals and magazines. The book contains approximately 250 games (most of them annotated), with about 250 positional diagrams. John S. Hilbert is a senior attorney for the Office of Hearings and Appeals of the Social Security Administration. He lives in Kenmore, New York.

Alexei Shirov
Delays occurred in the production of this book when, in 1995, Shirov lost his computer containing all his work! This has resulted in a better book since many of the original annotations have been revised or re-written completely. What we end up with is a magnificent collection of 82 of the Latvian’s best games - all deeply annotated - plus additional chapters on his favourite Botvinnik variation of the Semi-Slav and on some selected endings. The complexity and originality of Shirov’s play explains why he is regarded by many as the natural heir to Mikhail Tal. The games included here were played between 1983 and 1996, mostly against the world’s leading Grandmasters. A top class work.

Alexei Shirov
Super GM Alexei Shirov has attracted many admirers across the chess world with his own brand of sacrificial, attacking chess. In 1998 he was due to play Kasparov for the World Championship title but this match never happened. In an introduction to this book, which begins where part one left off, he describes the significant events of his life from 1997 to 2004 and then, in the main body, presents 53 of his best games from this period, with his own annotations. Whether anyone can attempt to emulate Shirov is an open question but playing through his games cannot fail to inspire and entertain players of all standards. Alexei Shirov has been one of the world's leading Grandmasters since 1990 and was runner-up in the 2000 FIDE world Championship.

Sergei Soloviev (Ed)
Born in Riga, in 1972, Alexei Shirov has often been thought of as the natural successor to Mikhail Tal because of his combinative style and his frequent attempts to defy the logic of a position and to impose his own creativity at whatever risk or cost. His talent has seen him become one of the World's strongest Grandmasters and yet, perhaps because of his constant seeking for originality, he has not, so far, reached the summit of the modern chess scene. His aborted match against Kasparov in 1998 was a sad loss for chess players everyshere. This book includes a brief biography, an interview with Shirov conducted by Yuri Vasiljev, one hundred of Shirov's best wins with text annotations by Grandmasters Khalifman, Yudasin, Kochiev, Motwani, Speelman and others, 8 pages of colour plates, 4 pages of b/w plates, crosstables and indexes of openings and opponents. A well produced tribute to one of the modern game's greatest talents.

Vasily Smyslov
When Smyslov became World Champion by defeating Mikhail Botvinnik in 1957 it was the culmination of a ten year personal battle to reach the summit of the chess world. This book is a translation from Russian, by Dr. Ken Neat, of volume one of Smyslov's autobiography which includes 140 games, annotated by Smyslov, and covers the period up to his match victory over Botvinnik. Smyslov also gives a brief account of the key events in his struggle from 1948 to 1957 and tournament crosstables illustrate all of Smyslov's results during this period. An index of openings and opponents is also included. This book is be a welcome addition to the literature of the game as Smyslov is a true giant of the chess world. His harmonic, natural style of play meant that he was still a World Championship challenger in 1983: overs 25 years after winning the title!

Vasily Smyslov
The concluding part of Smyslov's autobiography contains 186 games with his own annotations from a period which saw Smyslov losing the World Championship back to Botvinnik and gradually being overtaken by Tal, Petrosian, Spassky and Fischer. Nevertheless he continued to play in the world's top events throughout the 1960s and 1970s and, in 1984, found himself a World Championship candidate again defeating Hubner and Ribli before losing to Kasparov. The book also contains over 100 pages of tournament result tables and is an outstanding autobiography of one of the world's greatest players.

This "find the winning continuation" style book has 150 diagrammed puzzles, all taken from Spassky's games, together with hints and solutions. The complete game from which the puzzle comes is given in the solutions section. In the brief biographical introduction the authors look back over Spassky’s long and distinguished career to examine how he defeated his long-time adversaries, carefully highlighting his most colourful and celebrated encounters over the chessboard. Boris Spassky is a true chess legend, a World Champion who, thanks to his monumental battles with Bobby Fischer, raised the popularity of the game to a level that had never been seen before. Although at the height of his powers many saw Spassky as a universal player, adept at outplaying his opponents in any type of position, it is no secret that from an early age he thrived on sharp, attacking play. With the initiative at his hands he could conjure up wonderful combinations and deadly attacks.

Neil McDonald
Rudolph Spielmann played in the same era as Capablanca, Rubinstein and Nimzowitsch but his style was that of earlier times, abounding as it did in sacrificial and gambit play. He was described by Tartakower as "The last knight of the King's Gambit" and he wrote the classic book "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" based on his own games. In this book Neil McDonald analyzes some of Spielmann's best games and most famous sacrifices and combinations with a mixture of complete and part games. He has organised the examples according to material theme with chapters such as The Noble Knight, Rampaging Rooks and Pawn Power. Each chapter includes examples of Spielmann's play together with quiz positions for the reader to solve. This study of Spielmann's play provides both entertainment and instruction for chess players of all abilities.

Kurt Landsberger
Luckily for chess scholars, many letters and postcards survive written by Steinitz and his associates, friends and foes. After years of research, numerous personal contacts with people on three continents, and unflagging efforts to acquire any and all known letters to and from Steinitz, the author here presents in their own words a remarkable account of Steinitz and his contemporaries in the chess world of over a century ago. Notable personalities that write or are written about include Lasker, Pillsbury, Zukertort, Bird, Blackburne, Janowski, Tschigorin and Winawer. Each original letter, postcard, scrapbook item, newspaper or chess magazine article or other writing (including three lengthily-negotiated match play agreements) are described along with details of location, ownership, and circumstances of discovery. It is then printed, nearly always in full, in English (many translated from their original German by Landsberger). The author provides a running commentary on the letters and documents, which are generally chronological in arrangement, putting them in context and remarking the significance of certain points made in them. A biographical dictionary at the back of the book offers information about all the many figures who received, sent, or were mentioned in the documents or letters. Some of the games accompanying some of the letters are annotated by modern grandmaster Andy Soltis (Steinitz's annotations and insights also accompany some). Each game is illustrated. Facsimiles of some of the letters are provided.

Long known as one of the greatest chess masters of the nineteenth century, William Steinitz had a rich and elevated career and life, which can now be known as well. From Steinitz’s own writings and the fruits of extensive first-time-ever research by the author, a fascinating portrayal emerges of the life and genius of a man widely known as the "Bohemian Caesar" quite apart from his chess dominance. Lengthy annotations for the 15 selected games are provided by modern grandmaster Andy Soltis, often augmented by Steinitz’s own observations. Three additional games are also included. Each game is illustrated. Kurt Landsberger, born in Prague with the name Steinitz, is the champion’s great-grandnephew. He is also the editor of The Steinitz Papers: Letters and Documents of the First World Chess Champion (2002).

Bruce Harper & Yasser Seirawan
In this, the second volume of a three-volume series, over 200 games of Canadian Grandmaster Duncan Suttles are analysed in depth. This volume features games which begin with the "A" category of openings, using the opening classification system popularized by the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings.

Classifying Suttles' openings is no easy task. The reader will find many games described as "Unnamed Opening", which have in common only the signature first move 1.g3. The opaque intricacies of the "Suttles System" are explored in this volume, along with many epic games starting with the English Opening, which Suttles played for White and faced as Black. Many of Suttles' attacking ideas from the Closed Sicilian (coming in Volume 3) are seen here.

Another important series of games for the serious student are the "Rats" (1...g6) where White foregoes an immediate attack and proceeds more positionally with 3.c4. The Strategic plans and tactics Suttles devised in this opening are as valid today as when they were played.

Most of all, this volume features many hard-fought, uncompromising and confusing games by one of the most original and fearless Grandmasters to have played the Royal Game.
Bruce Harper is a many time British Columbia Chess Champion and has known Suttles for 40 years. Yasser Seirawan is a leading Grandmaster, former World Junior Champion, 4 time U.S. Chess Champion and a widely respected chess author.
