John Healy
This collection of John Healy's games, and positions from his games, show how tactics and psychology can be used to find opportunities in the least promising of situations and create winning chances from even the most dubious looking positions.
Each game sparkles with some unusual tactical or defensive motif. Along with the games the author describes in eloquent but brutal language the beautiful, sometimes terrible, world of chess - where sport, art and science merge.
Also included are 22 "find the winning move" diagrammed puzzles, taken from the author's games, with solutions at the end of the book.
John Healy's previous book "The Grass Arena" catapulted him to worldwide literary fame. That classic memoir described how Healy, by discovering chess, escaped a life of alcoholism, violence, vagrancy, crime and imprisonment.
Published 2010, softback, 135 pages.

Alexander Cherniaev & Alexander Meynell
David Janowski was one of the leading grandmasters in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Victories in individual games against Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine, a phenomenal run of successes in major tournaments and a universally acknowledged elegance of style, combined to make him one of the most feared and respected exponents of the game. Janowski, however, has not been rewarded in English language chess literature with the accolades he deserves. In this book, the first collection in English of his best games and results, the authors introduce us to a great fighter and artist, knowledge of whose games will enrich the experience of any chess aficionado. They have selected 64 of Janowski's best games with annotations either by leading contemporaries of Janowski or by the authors themselves. Tournament cross tables and a list of games are also included. Alexander Cherniaev is a Russian Grandmaster, journalist and author based in Guildford, England. He has been a silver medallist in the Moscow championship. Alexander Meynell is official coach of the Hammersmith Chess Club and maintains one of Britain’s most extensive chess libraries.
Published 2005, softback, 147 pages.
