Richard Palliser, Colin McNab & James Vigus
The Dangerous Weapons series of opening books focuses on moves and ideas which create complex, original positions, full of sharp tactics or innovative positional ideas. These are moves which are rare or unjustly neglected and will create new challenges for your opponent at the board.
In DW: The Pirc and Modern the authors examine ideas for Black in these related opening systems, creating a mini-repertoire of sharp systems against the 150 Attack, Austrian Attack, The Classical System, The Spike and the Fianchetto System. In the Modern Defence the authors offers ideas against Bg5 lines, Bc4 systems and the brutal early h4. With a mixture of analysis and illustrative games this book offers plenty for the reader to try out in his or her own games.
Richard Palliser is an International Master with numerous tournament successes to his name, and in 2006 he became Joint British Rapidplay Champion. He has already established a reputation as a thorough and well-researched chess writer. Grandmaster Colin McNab and FIDE Master James Vigus are both leading exponents of the Pirc and Modern Defences. Colin McNab co-authored "The Ultimate Pirc" with John Nunn in 1998 whilst James Vigus recently wrote "The Pirc in Black and White".

Charlie Storey
The Sniper - based on a system of development with 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and 3...c5! - is a dynamic weapon for Black against almost any first move by White. Black allows White to occupy the centre but, in true hypermodern style, strikes back at once. The Sniper is a fascinating opening that can lead to original or barely-known positions in which White is thrown onto his own resources and Black can strive for the initiative. White also has to negotiate a minefield of transpositions, typically into Sicilian, King's Indian or Benko-type positions.
This book includes 70 complete, annotated games with the Sniper System against various White setups including 1.e4, 2.d4, 3.Nc3 - 1.e4, 2.d4, 3.Nf3 - 1.e4, 2.d4, 3.c3 and 1.d4, 2.c4, as well as less common openings. Playing through these games will give you a good grounding in Sniper strategies and tactics.
Author Charlie Storey has been playing the Sniper for many years and has contributed several original ideas and move-orders to the opening. In the 2009 British Championships he scored a magnificent 4/4 using the Sniper System. In this book he reveals his secrets and provides you with everything you need to know to play this fascinating opening.
Charlie Storey is a FIDE Master, the 2008 British Rapidplay Champion and the winner of over 60 open tournaments in the UK. He has been teaching chess for over 15 years.

Joe Gallagher
The very closely linked Pirc and Modern Defences are dynamic systems that are favoured by ambitious, counter-attacking players. Black plays in a hypermodern fashion, allowing White to build an unopposed pawn centre with the idea of plotting it's eventual downfall. The bulk of this book is devoted to the Pirc Defence as Grandmaster Joe Gallagher considers ..Nf6 to be a natural and good move not worth avoiding. The final two chapters look at independent lines of the Modern. Using 56 complete, annotated games Gallagher goes back to basics, explaining the fundamental principles of the Pirc/Modern and it's numerous variations. Throughout the book there are plenty of notes, tips and warnings to guide the improving player, while important strategies, ideas and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated. Really this a is a repertoire book for players of the Black pieces who are taking up the Pirc for the first time. It usually offers a choice of lines to suit different playing styles and is aimed at club strength players. Chapters include: Austrian Attack 5..c5 / 5..0-0, Classical 6..c6/Bg4//Nc6, 4.Be3, 4.Bg5/Bc4, The Modern Against c2-c4 and The Modern against 1.e4.

Alexander Khalifman
The fourth book of the series is devoted to openings which arise after the moves 1.e4 d6, or 1.e4 g6. These systems have earned their right to exist despite the numerous attempts to refute them. The positions are so diverse strategically and so rich tactically that they need a whole volume to analyse them properly. Black avoids early clashes and narrows his sphere of influence to only three ranks. However his harmonious development often enables him to attack White’s powerful centre successfully. The 14th World Champion Khalifman recommends schemes with f2-f4, which provide additional control over the centre. He also offers systems against the Czech System(3..c6), 3..e5; and 3..Nbd7. The twenty eight chapters in this fundamental work includes plenty of original analysis which will surely cause Black a lot of problems!

Andrew Martin
The Hippopotamus involves a double fianchetto by Black who often develops using his first three ranks only, waiting to see how White arranges his forces before launching a counter-strike. Patience, a sense of timing and creativity are essential qualities for any potential Hippopotamus player as the theory of this defence is almost non existent - until now! For this ground breaking book I.M. Andrew Martin uses 39 annotated games to explain Black's game plan. He offers some ideas on how best Black should respond to a variety of White set-ups including Bc4 Systems, The Austrian Attack, Be3/Bg5 Lines and Quiet Systems. A special chapter is devoted to a hero of the Hippopotamus, Max Ujtelky, who's weird ideas paved the way for others and earned the Hippo a modicum of respectability. The game Nezhmetdinov - Ujtelky is not to be missed! The book includes indexes of opening variations and games played.

Nigel Davies
In this introduction to the Modern Defence (1.e4,g6;) Grandmaster Nigel Davies shows how to play Black against the many attacking options available to White. He goes back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them. The material is presented using 58 annotated, illustrative games (many from his own practice), chosen for their instructional value. He also passes on his own experience with explanations, tips and warnings throughout the book. He advocates systems with ..d6 and ..c5 or ..d6 and ..e5 for Black as offering most ocunter-play.
Davies includes chapters on countering The Austrian Attack, Bg5 systems, h4 systems, Be3 lines, The Averbakh System, Bc4 systems, c3 systems, The Classical 4.Nf3 and g2-g3 systems for White.
The Modern Defence is a dynamic, ambitious and universal opening, one that can be used against virtually every system White can play. Black's provocative strategy is based upon allowing White to construct an imposing pawn centre in the anticipation that a well-timed strike will bring about its downfall. Both sides play for high stakes: White can hope to succeed with a direct attack or to squash Black with a space advantage, while Black will aim to destroy White's centre and mop up the remains. All in all this can lead to intriguing battles in which one slip from either side is often fatal.
The Starting Out series has firmly established itself as the leading guide to studying openings for up-and-coming players. These books are distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, the lucid explanations of the fundamentals, and the abundance of notes, tips and warnings to help the reader absorb vital ideas. Starting Out opening books are ideal for enthusiastic chess players who have little experience of the openings in question and who wish to appreciate the essential principles behind them.
Nigel Davies is both an experienced Grandmaster and chess trainer. A former British Open Quickplay Champion, Davies is the author of several successful chess books.

Jerry van Rekom & Leo Jansen
The Lion arises after 1.e4,d6; 2.d4,Nf6; 3.Nc3,Nbd7; although Black can consider 3..e5; which is also examined in this book. The authors have avoided lines which transpose directly to the Philidor Defence as these are covered in specialist books on the Philidor. The main sections cover 4.f4 (The Lion's Den) 4.Nf3 - including an extensive analysis of lines where White attempts a sacrifice on f7 (The Lion's Claw and The Lion's Roar), 3..e5; (The Lion's Yawn) and Anti-Lion Systems (The Lion's Mouth). The authors present their own and other peoples analysis, backed up with example games and game fragments. The introduction covers the history of The Lion and questions of pawn structure. This is an updated version of the 2001 book "The Lion: The Black Weapon". Authors Jerry van Rekom and Leo Jansen are two strong Dutch club players who developed the system and wrote the original book about it in 1997.

Lev Alburt and Alexander Chernin
An extremely well presented book, packed with new ideas and theoretical novelties and with key points, positions and memory markers highlighted in colour throughout. In such a large book there is space for both theoretical analysis and explanation of middlegame ideas. Part one outlines how to study an opening and how to get the most from the book. Part two by Alexander Chernin explains the strategy of the Pirc looking, in ten chapters, at key concepts for both sides. In such a fluid system as the Pirc it is vitally important to understand the role of each piece in the different pawn structures which can arise. Part three by Lev Alburt offers a Pirc repertoire for black and gives theory and extensive explanation to back it up. An index of games and variations is included. If you are looking for a complete answer to 1.e4 this book provides it in a way that makes reading and remembering much easier.
For this 2nd edition part 3 of the book, dealing with current theory, has been updated to reflect changes which have occurred since 2001 when Pirc Alert was first published.
Published 2009, softback, 446 pages.

James Vigus
A comprehensive guide to the Pirc including, for the first time, a chapter on the 150 Attack which has come to prominence in recent years. The author examines in-depth the old main lines such as the Austrian Attack and Classical System as well as new ideas such as 4.Be3/5.f3, the 150 Attack and The Spike. Each of the 12 chapters is packed with new analysis and games (87 games in total), and each chapter has a summary of the theory and an index of variations. A very thorough and well researched first book from English FIDE Master James Vigus.
Published 2007, softback, 381 pages.
"THE PIRC IN BLACK and WHITE is, without any doubt, the best book on the Pirc ever written. It's up to date, filled with original analysis by the author, offers interesting move orders that avoid some problem lines, and gives a very useful summary at the end of every chapter. I said it earlier and I'll say it again: this is a MUST BUY if you play the Pirc, or if you open with 1.e4. An outstanding piece of work!" Jeremy Silman
