Jonathan Hilton & Dean Ippolito
The late Aleksander Wojtkiewicz - known as "Wojo" to his fans and followers - was one of the most feared players of the White pieces in the U.S. tournament circuit. Using his dynamic, Catalan-based opening repertoire, the "Polish Magician" won hundreds of tournaments from the 1990's until his untimely death in 2006. Now, Wojtkiewicz experts IM Dean Ippolito and NM Jonathan Hilton have joined forces to produce the definitive "how-to" manual for learning Wojo’s repertoire with White after 1.Nf3 d5; 2.d4. Over the course of 75 fully annotated games - 40 of which were played by Wojo himself - the authors make Wojtkiewicz's strategies easily accessible to the chess public for the first time.
Wojo's Weapons has plenty to offer chessplayers of all strengths:
Club players looking to master an efficient, safe, and practical White repertoire will benefit from this highly readable book. The authors give full verbal explanations of each key idea, and brief recaps are provided at the end of annotated games.
Titled players will find full, up-to-date theoretical coverage of all the lines presented. The book is packed with the authors' own novelties and little-known ideas, and analysis of the Catalan given by GM Boris Avrukh in 1.d4 is updated and improved.
Finally, experts looking to achieve the master title will benefit most from the thorough explanations of middlegame and endgame ideas provided in the annotated games themselves. If you are looking to attain the level of positional maturity needed to become a titled player, this book is for you.
Wojo’s Weapons is arranged so that ideas learned in the first chapters can be applied to your own tournament practice right away – so if you think you’re ready to start winning the Wojo way, there is no longer anything stopping you. This book is your tool to building a world-class repertoire and to achieving positional mastery.

The author of two other books, Dean operates a successful chess teaching company, Dean Ippolito, LLC, in New Jersey, helping his students to win 15 national titles. He is currently working to earn the title of Grandmaster.
National Master Jonathan Hilton is an award-winning freelance journalist and the author of over one hundred published articles on chess. Jonathan Hilton & Dean Ippolito
IM Dean Ippolito and NM Jonathan Hilton team up again to continue their coverage of the late GM Aleksander Wojtkiewicz's winning repertoire with the White pieces, designed to grind down weaker players while challenging his peers.
In this second volume, Ippolito and Hilton examine Wojo's handling of the popular King's Indian Defence, focusing on the positional Fianchetto Variation.
Over the course of 78 fully annotated complete games, the authors examine Black’s various plans, explain the key ideas, offer original analysis, and show the way for White to minimize counterplay and nurse his natural opening edge through to victory.
Wojtkiewics scored a stunning 80.2% winning percentage with his Fianchetto King's Indian and in this book Ippolito and Hilton make this score accessible to amateur players.
Far more than an opening monograph, Wojo's Weapons 2 is a seminar in how to cash in on small advantages, which players of all strengths - even those who don't play queen's pawn openings - will find instructive.
International Master Dean Ippolito, a 10-time All-America Team member and winner of 13 national championship tournaments, has more than twenty years experience playing Wojtkiewicz's systems. The author of two other books, Dean operates a successful chess teaching company in New Jersey.
National Master Jonathan Hilton is an award-winning freelance journalist. His 2006 Chess Life Online series, "How Wojo Won," was praised for its accessibility to club players. Jonathan has relied on the Polish-American star's repertoire with the White pieces for the better part of a decade.

Peter Wells
Chess Explained is a new series of books about chess openings. They are not theoretical works in the traditional sense, but more a series of lessons from a chess expert with extensive over-the-board experience with an opening. You will gain an understanding of the opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.
This book explains how to play the Queen's Indian through the medium of 25 recent, instructive games which are discussed in detail. White's main options of 4.g3, 4.Nc3, 4.a3 and 4.e3 are examined in depth with extensive verbal explanations of plans and tactical ideas.
Peter Wells is a grandmaster from England who regularly competes in international tournaments. He was runner-up in the British Championship in 1991, 1999 and 2001.

Andrew Greet
The Queen's Indian (1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nf3,b6;) is renowned as one of Black's most solid defences to 1.d4. Indeed this reputation sometimes deters players from adopting it as it can be difficult to generate winning chances for Black. However, ambitious lines of play do exist and in this book Andrew Greet presents a repertoire for Black which offers the prospect of a more unbalanced game, with winning chances, without compromising excessively on soundness. In sixteen chapters he covers both the main Petrosian and fianchetto systems as well as less common lines with e3 and Bg5 for White. He recommends playing the forthright 4..Ba6; against both 4.a3, and 4.g3, whilst opting for 4..Bb4; against 4.Nc3. In all cases this leads to an uncompromising struggle rather than safe equality.
With both verbal explanations and analysis Greet highlights the principal tactical and positional plans for both White and Black whilst building a sound repertoire for the second player. Andrew Greet is a young International Master, a former British Junior Champion, and is one of the UK’s most rapidly improving players.

This is a thorough coverage of the Queen's Indian, one of Black's most durable defences, which arises after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nf3,b6. Black's white squared bishop can help create a powerful kingside attack and, in any case, an unbalanced game ensues. Each of the main chapters begins with a discussion of typical positions and plans before giving more detailed analysis and current theory and ending with a summary of the current state of play in that particular line. The book is written from Black's perspective but all White's main attacking ideas are covered. Chapters are: 1.Strategic Introduction, 2.Miles Variation (4.Bf4/Bg5) 3.4.e3, 4.4.Nc3,Bb7; 5.Bg5 & others, 5.Nimzo Hybrid 4.Nc3,Bb4; 5.Bg5, 6.Petrosian Variation 4.a3, 7.Petrosian Main Line 4.a4;Bb7, 5.Nc3, 8. Jacob Aagaard
This is the first new book on the Queen's Indian for a few years and is aimed at the tournament player with up-to-date coverage of the most critical lines. The introductory chapter explains both sides' ideas and some of the key pawn structures and piece manoeuvres. This is followed by the theoretical material which is based around 66 complete, annotated games arranged in eight chapters. The book is in two parts according to whether or not White plays g3. In part one chapters include 4.Bf4/Bg5, The Petrosian System (4.a3), 5.Qc2/Bg5, 5.Qb3 and 4.e3. In part two the author examines 4.g3,Bb4+; 4.g3,Ba6; and 4.g3,Bb7. Each chapter has a summary of variations. There is enough material here for any club or tournament player to play these systems with confidence from either side.

Alexander Beliavsky & Adrian Mikhailchishin
The Petrosian System (1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nf3,b6; 4.a3) was, at first, thought of as a typical example of former World Champion Tigran Petrosian's cautious approach to the game. However, it brought him many points and when, in the 1980s, Garry Kasparov used 4.a3, as part of a dangerous attacking plan, the system became a major weapon against the Queen's Indian Defence. In this book the authors present an objective analysis of the Petrosian System, examining critical ideas for both sides. Each part of the book has a "Main Ideas" section which is followed up by a "Move by Move" section containing more detailed analysis and discussion of plans. Alexander Beliavsky is a four time USSR Champion and a former World Championship contender. Adrian Mikhailchishin is a Grandmaster, originally from the USSR, and was Slovenian Champion in 2002.

The main sections cover 4.Qc2, 4.e3, 4.Nf3, Saemisch/4.f3 and the Leningrad System with Dangerous Weapons and Tricky Transpositions highlighted throughout. There is plenty of thought provoking stuff here, mostly tested by unorthodox Grandmasters, to inspire the adventurous. Grandmaster John Emms recommends a repertoire for Black in the Nimzo-Indian (1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nc3,Bb4;), illustrated using 41 complete games, with questions and exercises throughout to test your understanding of strategy and tactics in this popular defence.
The Move by Move approach seeks to provide a though provoking platform to study chess openings. Yuri Yakovich
The author has been playing the 4.f3 system with White for over 15 years and now he shares his thoughts and analysis in the form of this book. Seven chapters of analysis and text examine the position after Black's 4th move alternatives 4..Nc6; 4..0-0; 4..c5; and 4..d5 (4 chapters) A final chapter of illustrative games shows some ideas in action in international chess. 4.f3 challenges the Nimzo-Indian by forcing Black either to occupy the centre with pawns or allow White to do so. Play is often quite sharp and the better prepared player has a big advantage, especially since Yakovich has uncovered new ideas in several key lines. Author Yuri Yakovich is an experienced Russian Grandmaster.

Bogdan Lalic
The Classical Nimzo-Indian arises after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nc3,Bb4; 4.Qc2 and represents one of White's most popular choices in this opening. In the three parts of this book, 4..d5; 4..0-0and 4..others, Grandmaster Lalic has chosen and annotated 84 games which illustrate the development of ideas in the Classical System up to the present day. Coverage is objective and the author recommends playing it with both White and Black in order to develop a good understanding. As is usual with his books Bogdan Lalic has put a lot of effort into this work.

Chris Ward
The starting position for the Kasparov System is after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nc3,Bb4; 4.Nf3 when Black's main options 4..b6 and 4..c5 are examined in the two parts of this book. Usually after 4..b6; White plays 5.Bg5 but can also try 5.Qb3, whereas after 4..c5; 5.g3 is the idea. Other 4th moves for Black are analysed in a separate chapter. GM Chris Ward offers an objective look at this system, popularised by Kasparov, illustrating it with 68 complete, annotated games. Published 2003, softback, 160 pages.

Carsten Hansen
Ever since Nimzowitsch introduced his flexible, dynamic defence to the queen's pawn, debate has raged over White's best reply. Many variations have been in and out of fashion, but one line in particular has proved an enduring weapon - the sound and solid 4 e3 line, known as the Rubinstein Variation. The 4 e3 Nimzo is extraordinarily rich in strategy. All manner of different central pawn-structures can arise, such as the blocked centre characteristic of the Hübner Variation and a variety of IQP positions. This comprehensive coverage contains 18 chapters of analysis in two parts. Part one covers 4..0-0 and part two examines other 4th moves for Black. Does not include transpositions to the Saemisch System. Carsten Hansen is a FIDE Master from Denmark. He has a reputation for writing well-researched, thorough books on major opening systems.

Angus Dunnington
Rubinstein's 4.e3 is still one of the most popular systems against the Nimzo-Indian. White maintains a flexible position allowing him to choose where to develop his pieces in preparation for a central or kingside offensive. Here International Master Angus Dunnington explains the strategies which both sides can follow through the medium of eighteen recently played master games. His book is divided into three parts covering Black's three main responses 4..b6; 4..c5; and 4..0-0; and exploring the consequences of White subsequent choice to play Ne2 or Nf3. His in depth analysis illustrates the current theory and practice of this complex opening system which offers chances for both sides.

Timothy Taylor
Timothy Taylor outlines a repertoire for White based on the solid Rubinstein Variation against the Nimzo-Indian Defence. After 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e6; 3.Nc3,Bb4; 4.e3,any; White plays 5.Ne2 and avoids having doubled c pawns, forcing Black to either give up the two bishops for no compensation or retreat his Bb4, allowing White a queenside bind.
A combination of analysis and illustrative games are used to explain the system.
Timothy Taylor is an American International Master and iconoclastic author.
