Nigel Davies
Is it possible for amateur players, with limited time available for chess study, to improve their game? Nigel Davies believes that anyone can improve their chess, at any age, by adopting an effective approach. In this book he identifies ten key areas of the game which, in his own experience as a chess coach, he has found to be the most important for an aspiring player. By focusing on these areas players can, in the limited time they have available, produce an improvement in their game.
Key areas for chess improvement include studying the endgame and developing tactical vision alongside psychological weapons such as pre-game rituals, curing time trouble and knowing your enemy. Davies offers practical examples from competitive games of the value of improvement in these areas.
Nigel Davies is a Grandmaster, a winner of numerous international tournaments and a former British Rapidplay Champion. He's an expert in chess teaching, especially to club players, and the author of many successful books.

Steve Giddins
In this modern day emulation of Chernev's "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played" Steve Giddins has chosen 50 supremely instructive games - some old, some new, and including many that few readers will have seen before. He has annotated these games in detail from a modern perspective, explaining the useful lessons that can be learnt from them, while avoiding the dogma that characterized many older works of this type. Topics include: Attacking the King, Defence, Defence, Piece Power, Pawn Structure and Endgame Themes. Each game is followed by a recap of the main lessons to be learned. In many ways this book is a treatise on modern positional play. Giddins writes in a highly accessible down-to-earth style that appeals to club players seeking to improve their understanding of practical chess. His knowledge of Russian-language chess literature has enabled him to find many excellent examples that have not appeared in previous western literature. Steve Giddins is a FIDE Master from England who plays regularly in international events and has frequently contributed to the British Chess Magazine.

Jesper Hall
Many chessplayers find it difficult to improve their game beyond a certain level. They can see basic tactics, know a little about openings and can calculate a few moves ahead. However, so do their opponents. What is the next level, and how does one get there? This book is aimed at chess-players who have progressed well beyond beginner level and have acquired the basic skills required to play at club level, but need guidance to improve their understanding of chess. It is based on the training program that Hall himself followed when he was an up-and-coming player. The lessons are not based on 'quick fixes', but instead provide a well-rounded course in all aspects of chess that will equip the reader well for his or her chessboard battles, and provide a firm yet flexible basis for further improvement.

Emanuel Lasker
In the spring of 1895, reigning world chess champion Emanuel Lasker gave a series of lectures in London. These were geared to the level of the club players or intermediate level. Later that year Lasker gathered his lecture material together and wrote it up in manuscript form to be published, retaining the informal, conversational tone of the lectures.
The result was Common Sense in Chess, long regarded as a classic both during Lasker's lifetime and for generations afterwards. It is a masterpiece of compression and exposition, and in the whole of chess literature, there is nothing that quite compares with it. The first six chapters deal with various openings whilst the remaining chapters are on attack, defence and the endgame.
Respected chess author Bruce Alberston has taken Lasker’s classic and created a 21st century edition. The text has been converted to modern algebraic notation and more diagrams have been added (there are now more than 330 diagrams!). Splendidly complementing Lasker's original masterpiece, Alberston has added seven games annotated by Lasker that were played in the famous Hastings Tournament of 1895.

Lars Bo Hansen
This is a chess improvement book with a difference! GM Lars Bo Hansen offers practical advice on chess preparation but, whereas traditionally, chess games are divided into three stages - opening, middlegame and endgame - in this important work the author presents chess as a game of five phases, explaining the "dos" and "don'ts" in each: * the opening * transition from opening to middlegame * the middlegame * transition from middlegame to endgame * technical endgames. A final chapter offers practical tips on both pre-game preparation as well as advice for during play.
With a wealth of examples from both his own practice and that of other Grandmasters, Hansen discusses the typical mistakes and pitfalls, and shows how to handle the subtleties unique to each stage. He also advises on how to work on your chess in each aspect of the game. Of special value is his explanation of how to study typical middlegames, together with his discovery that middlegame preparation - a neglected area for most players - is both possible and necessary.
Lars Bo Hansen is a well-known grandmaster from Denmark. He has won the Danish Championship on two occasions, and represented his country in four olympiads, winning a bronze medal for his individual performance in 1990. Away from the board, he teaches and lectures on business studies, with a particular focus on marketing, organization and strategy.

Simon Williams
Simon Williams, one of Britain's most dynamic and aggressive chess-players, has selected his favourite attacking games from the modern era and added in-depth explanation and analysis to illustrate the decision making processes that attacking players must use. He explains how each stage in an attacking concept is formed and shows how top players spot the signs that indicate it is time to stake everything on an all-out assault. He includes thirty attacking games in seven themed chapters: Opening to Middlegame, Keeping the Initiative, Harmonising the Army, Locating the Weakpoint, Changing the Tempo, All-In and Playing to Your Strengths. The players featured in this entertaining collection include: Judit Polgar, Alexei Shirov, Veselin Topalov, Viswanathan Anand, Vasily Ivanchuk, Peter Svidler, Alexander Grishchuk and Magnus Carlsen. This is a valuable manual of attacking play as Williams discusses important issues such as what to calculate and identifying critical moves.

Jeremy Silman
How to Reassess Your Chess has long been considered a modern classic. Now, this fourth and final edition - completely rewritten and featuring all new examples - takes Silman's groundbreaking concept of imbalances to a whole new level.
Designed for players in the 1400 to 2100 rating range and for teachers looking for a ready-made chess curriculum, the author shares a mind-expanding journey that takes the reader through imbalance-basics, ensures that every detail of all the imbalances are mastered, and leaves the player/lover of chess with something he always wanted but never believed he could achieve: a master-level positional foundation.
A section on practical chess psychology (titled Psychological Meanderings) presents never-before-published ideas on psychological processes that hinder players of all levels, and gives easy-to-follow advice and techniques that will help anyone overcome these ubiquitous mental/emotional failings.
Hundreds of games brought to life by instruction-rich prose, and stories that offer humor while highlighting various lessons, vividly illustrate all the book's topics in a manner that's both personal and fun.
If the positional masterpieces of the chess legends have always been a mystery to you, if chess strategy has always been an unsolvable enigma, if you find yourself a positional pawn rather than a positional master, then How to Reassess Your Chess, 4th edition will prove to be a life-changing experience.
Jeremy Silman is an International Master and a world-class teacher, writer, and player who has won the American Open, the National Open, and the U.S. Open. Considered by many to be the game's preeminent instructive writer, he is the author of over thirty-seven books, including Silman's Complete Endgame Course, The Amateur's Mind, The Complete Book of Chess Strategy, and The Reassess Your Chess Workbook.

Simon Williams
In this book Grandmaster Simon Williams aims to find out how and why some players win a high proportion of their games quickly. He shows the importance of choosing the right opening moves and putting your opponent under pressure from the start. In addition he identifies typical mistakes which you should look out for in both your opponent's and your own play. A key skill in chess is to recognise critical moments as they happen and to exploit them with maximum efficiency.
Using 50 instructive and entertaining games which are over in fewer than 25 moves, Williams examines all the typical mistakes chess players make in the opening and early middlegame, how you should look to exploit them, and how to avoid falling into similar traps yourself.
The book covers many aspects of opening play, including gambit play, development advantage and pawn grabbing. Aimed at improving players and chess coaches.

Andres D Hortillosa
In August 2008 Andres D. Hortillosa entered the New England Masters. It was a brave choice for an unrated player to compete in such a tough event, but it proved to be an inspired decision; he exceeded all expectations and was rewarded with a FIDE international rating of 2199. This, however, was no overnight success; it was the result of systematic work. How did he achieve such outstanding improvement? The answer lies in this book.
Hortillosa believes that a chessplayer can improve at any age as long as he or she is inspired with the right attitude and enabled with the right thinking processes. In this original and thought-provoking book, Hortillosa explains his ever-evolving system of chess improvement. He discusses in detail methods of preparation, how to get the best out of all the available sources, and numerous over-the-board techniques such as capitalizing on mistakes, eliminating blunders, sticking to plans and minimizing harmful bias.
His system works and now he is divulging his secrets. You might be a young, teenage or adult player, but if you are serious about improving your chess this book is for you.
*A clear study plan to improve your chess
*How to sharpen over-the-board techniques
*Excellent guidance on how to train with books and software
Andres D. Hortillosa was a member of the United States All-Army Chess Team ten times. He earned graduate degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration and is currently a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Dan Heisman
Annotating one's own games has always been known as an important way of improving at chess. Publication of those annotations lets others criticize the analysis and helps the improvement process. In this book Dan Heisman shares his annotations to 28 of his own games, beginning when he was an average club player and ending when he had reached US Master standard. The reader can see how both his play and annotations change over time and, perhaps, see ways in which their own play may be improved.
Chess master, author, and renowned teacher Dan Heisman shows you the whys and the hows of annotating your games.
Adding recent games and new comments that shed light on his original annotations, in this revised and expanded edition of The Improving Annotator the author explores the benefits and pitfalls of letting computers do our thinking for us, and explains the best way to use them for analysis.

Emmanuel Neiman & Yochanan Afek
Every chess player knows that some moves are harder to see than others. Why is it that, frequently, uncomplicated wins simply do not enter your mind?
Even strong grandmasters suffer from blind spots that obscure some of the best ideas during a game. What is more: often both players fail to see the opportunity that is right in front of their eyes.
Neiman and Afek have researched this problem and discovered that there are actually identifiable reasons why your brain discards certain ideas.
In this book they demonstrate different categories of hard-to-see chess moves and clearly explain the psychological, positional and geometric factors which cloud the chess player's brain.
Invisible Chess Moves, with its many unique examples, instructive explanations and illuminative tests, will teach you how to discover your blind spots and see the moves which remain invisible for others.
Your results at the board will improve dramatically because your brain will stop blocking winning ideas.
Emmanuel Neiman is a FIDE master. He teaches chess in his home country France and he has written books on chess tactics and chess training. Yochanan Afek is an Israeli International Master who lives in Holland. He is an organizer, a journalist and a trainer, but probably best known as an endgame study composer. This is his third book on chess.

Emanuel Lasker
This new edition brings Emanuel Lasker's classic instruction manual into the 21st century. It has been re-set in algebraic notation and a large page format, with additional photographs of Lasker and his contemporaries and anecdotes about Lasker's life scattered throughout the book.
In the text, former World Champion Emanuel Lasker expounds his theory of chess from the basics through to openings, combinations and positional play. It is in this book that Lasker first offered a proper explanation of the theories of his predecessor as World Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz. Perhaps more valuable now as a piece of chess history rather than as a tutorial, the content of this book is, nevertheless, first rate and includes many brilliant and instructive games.

Mihail Marin
In the second edition of his highly praised book, Romanian Grandmaster Mihail Marin describes how eight of the greatest players of chess history used their superiority in one aspect of the game against their contemporaries. The chapters in this book discuss:
Rubinstein's excellent rook endgame technique, Alekhine's expertise with the heavy pieces, Botvinnik's ability for deep analysis, Tal's handling of heavy pieces vs. minor pieces, Petrosian's positional exchange sacrifices, Fischer's strength with the king's bishop, Karpov's handling of bishops with opposite colours and Korchnoi the rebel. Using annotated examples from the play of these champions the author unearths lessons in middlegame and endgame strategy. Includes biographies of the players concerned. "This really is an excellent book - true quality chess!" - Mark Dvoretsky.

Boris Gulko & Dr Joel R Sneed
This instructive and entertaining book follows the progress of U.S amateur player Joel Sneed as he receives chess coaching from Grandmaster Boris Gulko. The lessons are based around 25 of Gulko's own games which the two analyse together; each asking questions of the other. Gulko tests his pupil's understanding of the position and ability to calculate, whilst Sneed attempts to understand the thought processes of a chess Grandmaster. The resulting conversations shed light on many aspects of chess strategy, tactics and tournament psychology, in a wide range of different types of positions.
Boris Gulko is a former Soviet Champion who emigrated to the USA in 1986 and has since won the US Championship on two occasions. Joel Sneed is a professor of psychology at Queen's College, City University, New York and a student of Boris Gulko.
UPDATE: Since working on this book Joel Sneed has gained almost 200 rating points. He has just tied for 1st place in the Marshall Chess club Under 2000 tournament with 4 out of 5. Before the book he was ranked at 1613 and now is in the high 1700s.

Daniel Naroditsky
Daniel Naroditsky became World Junior Chess Champion in 2007 and now, at the age of 14, he has written his first chess book! In fact he started writing it when he realised that his own lack of positional understanding was hampering his play. Therefore the book covers some important aspects of middlegame play such as Prophylaxis, Defence in Worse Positions, Building and Breaking Fortresses, Positional Sacrifice, Paralysis in the Middlegame and Manoeuvring. Each chapter includes annotated games which ilustrate the concept in question, followed by a summary of the main points to remember and exercises to test the reader's understanding.
Overall the book is aimed at players of good club standard and above and includes a lot of the training material and notes which Naroditsky compiled for himself when trying to improve his own positional play.

Danny Gormally
Grandmaster Danny Gormally believes that understanding, preparation and will to win are three crucial factors which separate the greatest chess players from mere mortals. In Play Chess Like the Pros he examines these key aspects and attempts to bridge the gap between the best and the rest. He believes that a player's capacity to improve is limitless, and in this age of computer-assisted learning the opportunity to do so is greater than ever before. But are you prepared to stretch yourself, to take yourself out of your comfort zone?
Using both his own games and the games of other chess professionals, whose fighting qualities have impressed him, as examples, Gormally offers advice on the many aspects of chess playing, both practical and psychological, where improvement is possible for the average player.
However, this is more than a self-improvement book. Nearly 15 years of experience as a chess professional makes the author ideally placed to tell the stories, not just behind the moves but also the characters who play them, giving the reader an insider's view of professional chess in the modern age.
Danny Gormally is an English Grandmaster and former British Rapidplay Champion.
* A Grandmaster's revealing view of the modern game
* Advice on all aspects of chess including the increasing role of computers.

Andrew Soltis
Many chess players believe they cannot improve their standard without studying for five or six hours a day; something which they do not have time to do! Not so says Andy Soltis; the student needs to do is to learn the right methods to study productively, to make better use of existing tools e.g. computers or books, to set the right study goals and, above all, to make study enjoyable. In this book Grandmaster Soltis shows how best to study for improvement, what you do and don't need to know and how to make studying chess enjoyable.
Key areas covered include:
- Why you can't study chess the same way you study school subjects
- How to acquire the most important knowledge: intuition
- The role of memorizing (it's not a bad thing, despite what people say)
- How to get the most out of playing over a master's game
- Adopting a chess hero as a means of learning
- How great players study
- Computers as a study tool
- How to train someone else
Grandmaster Andrew Soltis is author of many books on various aspects of chess but is best known for his teaching books.

James Rizzitano
After a 14 year break from chess to pursue his career, IM James Rizzitano wanted to make a comeback. He realized that he didn't have the time to study chess full time and so resolved to make a thorough review of his games from earlier years in order to re-acquaint himself with his own strengths and weaknesses. He recommends this approach for any amateur player and here he shares the results of his self analysis with the reader and draws his own conclusions about opening selection, dealing with novelties, risk management, keeping the initiative and facing stronger players amongst other topics. He includes 64 of his own games (plus eleven by other players), each illustrating a key lesson, which he has annotated in depth. He also analyzes 20 instructive endgames, pointing out that most players will have more games involving a rook ending than a particular opening system. James Rizzitano is an International Master from New England, USA whose opponents in this book include many IMs and GMs from the USA and Europe.

Per Ostman
A Structured Approach to Move Selection in Chess
"I look one move ahead... the best!" - Siegbert Tarrasch
Chess is a wonderfully rich and complex game, but ultimately the goal can be simply defined as finding the best move, time after time. If you are able to do this, you will win your games. However, the million dollar question is: how can we give ourselves the very best chance of doing so?
Per Ostman is convinced that there are three key elements that we require: first and foremost, a structured move-by-move thinking process; second, the desired skills to execute this process; and finally, traditional chess knowledge we can build upon. Ostman examines these three vital building blocks which form the basis of what we need to master. He describes in detail a clear thinking process he has developed over several years as a chess teacher, a process to guide us in our ultimate search to find the best move.
*Improve your chess by structured move selection
*Numerous examples to illustrate clear thinking processes
*Covers calculation, planning and attacking skills
*Includes opening, middlegame and endgame play
Per Ostman is an experienced chess teacher and analyst. He has trained his son, Erik, to become one of the strongest junior players in Australia and has guided his school to continued success at state championships. He works as a Solutions Architect for Microsoft, and has also developed computer chess programs.
