Martin Weteschnik
An improved and expanded second edition of a modern classic.
"Chess is 99 per cent tactics" is an old saying. This may be an exaggeration, but even the remaining 1 per cent still depends on tactics. When Martin Weteschnik started working as a trainer in his local chess club, he quickly realized that even the stronger club players had great weaknesses in their tactical play. He also discovered that simply asking them to solve a huge number of puzzles did not fix the problem. These players clearly needed a good book, but when Weteschnik looked for it he found nothing suitable, so he decided to write it himself.
But Weteschnik was not completely satisfied with the book and decided to restructure and rewrite it completely. The first edition of this book, Understanding Chess Tactics, was hailed as a modern classic. This expanded and improved second edition offers two new chapters on "Overloading" and "Candidate Moves". It also has 300 brand new test positions to allow the reader to practice the tactical chess skills that Weteschnik helps to develop. The original text and analysis has been revised where necessary.

Graham Burgess
This is a puzzle book with a difference! In addition to tactical exercises Graham Burgess includes positions which call for a calm decision or an assessment based on intuition and analysis. This approach emulates more closely the type of decision making required in a real game. There are also puzzles with relatively little calculation involved, but where the key idea is surprisingly difficult to spot. Throughout the book, in both the solutions and captions to the positions, Burgess emphasises intructive points which can be taken from the position in question.
All the puzzles are taken from games played in 2010 or 2011 which means they will be new to most readers.
Gambit Publications has been publishing top-quality innovative chess books since 1998, winning numerous awards in several countries. FIDE Master Graham Burgess is Gambit's Editorial Director, and one of the founders of the company. He has written more than twenty books and holds the world record for marathon blitz chess playing. Glenn Flear
Tacticmania is a puzzle book with a difference. Grandmaster Glenn Flear makes sure the puzzles are unfamiliar to the reader by selecting them only from games played by himself or his wife Christine. The puzzles start at a moderate level then get steadily more difficult. The reader will be challenged by the puzzles and entertained by the colourful, manga-style illustrations that feature throughout.
Each of twelve themed chapters has an introduction with examples followed by a test section with around 30 positions for solving. Solutions are provided over the page from each puzzle. Chapter thirteen presents the Tactimania Test with twenty tough puzzles and a scoring system to check your performance.
Glenn Flear is a respected Grandmaster, author and coach. Early in his career, Glenn achieved one of the greatest-ever chess surprises when, as a last minute substitute, he won the London 1986 tournament ahead of a host of famous players. Glenn and Christine married during this event! Christine is a five-time French Women's Champion and their son James, a computer artist, created the illustrations.
