For many the Ruy Lopez really only begins after the moves 3...a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.h3 0-0 9.c3 - the starting point for Bologan's third DVD. Black then has a whole host of variations, but the ensuing structures have much in common and if you are equipped with some insider tips you will be able to take the correct decisions which can frequently only be made on a basis of generalised evaluations. Viktor Bologan is an outstanding adviser because when one considers his super score against the Ruy Lopez, he must have excellent knowledge of the ins and outs of this opening, and he does not hold back from sharing this knowledge with you.

Among the open games the only opening with which White can really fight for an advantage in the long term is the Ruy Lopez. But in order to make this serious effort, he has buckle down and learn a whole series of sub-variations. That is what the professionals do, including of course Viktor Bologan, who now reveals the secrets of his own grandmaster repertoire.
In the first part the top Moldovan player deals with systems in which Black avoids the main continuation 3...a6 on his third move. These include exotic lines such as 3...Nd4, 3...Nge7, 3...g6 and 3...Bc5, which should however not be under-estimated. In 3...f5 (the Schliemann Defence) he examines a system which has even found its way into the repertoire of many a top player. But the most important variation starts with 3...Nf6 and in its main move order leads to the Berlin Wall. In the Open Ruy Lopez quite different types of positions are reached - and White needs to understand these too. And our author prefers to avoid the Marshall Attack, so he suggests the Anti-Marshall beginnning with 8.h3.

The Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack with 1.b3 (or 1.Nf3 followed by 2.b3) is an opening system that has been rather neglected by the theoreticians but can prove deadly in the hands of the skilled tournament player. Leading exponents of this move have included both brilliant attacking players such as Ljubomir Ljubojevic, Albin Planinc and Artashes Minasian and positional players such as Tigran Petrosian, Mark Taimanov and Vladimir Bagirov. Although the distribution of material with a rook and two minor pieces against a rook and two minor pieces is a very common one in practical play, there is very little literature on the subject apart from that dealing with questions relating to the bishop pair. This gap should be plugged by the present DVD.
The harmony and coordination of the minor pieces, such as for example "the geometry of the knight pair" constitute a subject which lends itself very well to being examined in connection with rooks. Should the knights be defending one another or standing side by side? Other typical questions are: when is the combination rook+bishop+knight superior to the trio of rook and 2 knights? When should we liquidate to an ending with rook and minor piece against rook and minor piece, the sort of theme dealt with in the 9th endgame DVD? What are the rules of thumb and methods which we can deduce from this? For example is a slight initiative even greater when there are a rook + 2 knights against a rook + 2 knights?
In addition, attention will be paid to the restricting the mobility of the knights by means of Steinitz’ restriction method and questions of pawn handling such as Capablanca's rule. Some examples with 4 rooks are also considered so as to be able to examine a question which is important in practical play: when to exchange rooks. Also examined here in systematic fashion are many aspects of piece coordination which are also important in the middlegame and models are worked out to help you to better assimilate the important question of harmony.
The Grandmaster from Hamburg Dr. Karsten Mueller has been playing in the top division of the Bundesliga for the Hamburg Chess Club since 1988 and in 1996 and 1997 he came in third in the German Championship. Maybe you remember the famous game McDonnell-De Labourdonnais from their 1834 match in London, the one in which three connected black pawns reached the second rank and forced White’s resignation. What you probably do not know is that this game started with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 e5.
White’s most common move then is 5.Nb5, which Black for many years preferred to meet with 5...a6, which is a strategically risky decision. But a completely new development of the whole system was initiated in 1987, when Evgeny Sveshnikov, the godfather of the Sveshnikov Sicilian (4...Nf6 5.Nc3 e5), changed to 4...e5 and followed this with 5...d6, which is positionally more sound. The latter move brings us to the subject of the current DVD - the Kalashnikov, or the Neo-Sveshnikov line.
In 32 video clips Dejan Bojkov covers the main ideas behind Black’s setup, the positional ideas behind the opening, the dangers that the second player is facing and prepares a thorough and deep repertoire for those willing to play the line as Black. Born in Krasnodar (former Soviet Union), Sergei Tiviakov was a member of the Smyslov school and gained the titles of World Youth Champion at U16 and U18 levels. 1994 he represented Russia in the Chess Olympiads. Since 1997 Tiviakov has been living in Groningen (Netherlands). With his new home country he won the title in the European Teams Championships in both 2001 and 2005 and was victorious in the championship of the Netherlands in 2006 and 2007.
