Edward Dearing
Author Eddie Dearing advocates the Modern Exchange Grunfeld with 7.Nf3 and 8.Rb1 in this heavy duty theoretical manual which is based around 50 complete games with extensive annotations. Dearing's main aim is to provide a reliable opening repertoire for White against the Grunfeld and, to this end, he advocates lines of play against all Black's defensive options, both common and rare, in nine packed chapters. He offers his own conclusions and recommendations at the end of each chapter. Eddie Dearing is a Scottish International Master.

Valentin Bogdanov
The Grunfeld Defence arises after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,g6; 3.Nc3,d5; and appeared on the scene in the 1920s, as one of the new "hypermodern" opening systems. At the highest level it has been used by Botvinnik, Smyslov, Fischer and, of course, Kasparov in two of his matches against Karpov. White has many ways of continuing and these are explained clearly in Valentin Bogdanov's book. In eight chapters he examines the Clssical and Modern Exchange Systems, the Fianchetto System, the Russian System, lines with Bf4, or Bg5, and the quiet e3, lines. Using 25 well annotated games Bogdanov seeks to explain the underlying ideas as well as the tactical nuances of the Grunfeld in an unbiased way. His book is aimed at club and tournament level players wishing to make the Grunfeld part of their repertoire or learn how to play against it.
Chess Explained books offer an understanding of an opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.
International Master Valentin Bogdanov has over thirty years' experience as a chess trainer, and is from Ukraine. His pupils include Moskalenko, Savchenko and Drozdovsky, and he has acted as a second for the well-known grandmaster and theoretician Viacheslav Eingorn since the late 1970s.

Alexander Delchev & Evgenij Agrest
A Complete Repertoire for Black
The Safest Grunfeld offers a complete repertoire for Black against 1.d4, based on the Grunfeld Defence, and various Anti-Grunfeld systems such as 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nc3, 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.b4, and 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nc3. The book follows Chess Stars trademark structure with 3 chapters in every part. "Main Ideas" aims to give you a succinct review of the theory and the basic knowledge that should allow you to start playing the opening without much study. They also give examples of middlegame plans and typical tactical motifs, to complement the theoretical "Step by Step" and "Complete Games" chapters. In most main lines, the authors offer at least two alternative setups for Black - one solid system, and a more challenging approach. The material is up-to-date to April 1st 2011.
Alexander Delchev is a Bulgarian Grandmaster. He has won the Bulgarian Championship three times and participated in five Chess Olympiads. He is also co-author of the popular "Safest Sicilian". Evgenij Agrest is a Grandmaster from Belarus who now lives in Sweden. He is four times Swedish Champion and has represented Sweden in six Chess Olympiads.
Published 2011, softback, 348 pages.

Jacob Aagard
The Grunfeld Defence's first outing resulted in victory for Ernst Grunfeld over Alexander Alekhine, who was not best pleased (see book for details). Thus, in 1922, a new opening was born and it has been going strong ever since with Botvinnik, Fischer and Kasparov amongst it's practitioners. In this book, the latest in the excellent "Starting Out" series, I.M. Jacob Aagaard explores the ideas and tactics available to both sides in the Grunfeld. In seven chapters containing 47 complete, annotated games he illustrates the latest theory in the Classical Exchange System (two chapters), the Modern Exchange System (two chapters), the Russian System, Bf4 & Bg5 Systems and Other White Systems. Presentation is aimed at newcomers to the Grunfeld with tips, tricks and traps highlighted throughout. The standard of analysis makes this book suitable for experienced players who want to expand their opening repertoire rather than complete beginners. Coverage is balanced with no particular bias towards either side.
Published 2004, softback, 176 pages.
