Probably the most popular of the Encyclopaedia series, the fourth expanded edition of Volume B brings additional 128 pages of the brand new material:
* all Black's responses to 1. e4 except 1..e6 and 1..e5: Contains the Sicilian, Caro-Kann, Pirc, Modern, Alekhine, Scandinavian and all the rest of Black's rare opening choices against the advance of White's king's pawn.
* games and analyses from Chess Informants 1-82
* important game entries from recent tournament practice
* revised ECO codes
Chess Informant's trademark system of elimination remains one of the key qualities that contribute to the fundamental value of the Encyclopaedias. Previously filtered into Chess Informants 1-82, all lines had also to pass through multiple sieves of the Chess Informant Editorial Board to deserve their place in the fourth edition.
Published 2002, CD data is in four formats: Chess Informant Reader, ChessBase cbh, Chess Assistant and PGN.

Karsten Muller & Rainer Knaak
If you do not know opening theory in it's most intimate details, then you must rely on a sound understanding of chess. But sometimes, that is not enough, because opening traps lurk everywhere, relying on the unwary making "normal" moves, developing a piece, making a capture, setting or parrying a threat. But after that the reply is mainly an unusual and therefore an unexpected one: a sacrifice, a piece moves to an unusual square or an expected recapture is omitted in favour of another, better move. In this work, the authors have a twofold aim; if you wish, you can master the traps within the area of your own openings. But you can also systematically attempt to extend your opening repertoire in order to set some traps yourself!
Features at a glance:
suited to advanced players
main database contains 1000 traps from ECO code A00-E99
20 introductory texts
classification into traps and opening blunders
database of motifs
training database. System requirements: P-166, 32Mb RAM, Win 98SE/Me/2000/XP/Vista. Published 2005

Lubomir Ftacnik
This DVD by Lubomir Ftacnik is an ambitious project, presenting a comprehensive set of ideas and structures in chess openings, arising after the first move 1.d4. In 34 videos (plus intro and conclusion) the author covers all 1.d4 openings - classical ones, like all Queen's Gambit lines and the Indian defences, but also many interesting gambits, like the Benko, Blumenfeld and Budapest. The suggested choices are approved and active, but also safe for the first player. Many hours of explanations and suggestions will significantly shorten the time needed for building up a complete and workable set of opening weapons, usually called a repertoire.
Lubomir Ftacnik is a Slovak grandmaster, long term cooperator of ChessBase and dilligent analyst. For this DVD he has used his experience of three decades on the international chess scene. Just as they have done for many top players, the openings with 1.d4 have served him well throughout his active career. The lines against various defences have been forged in the fire of battles over the board. Learning more about the 1.d4 repertoire will bring any player a few steps closer to the coveted Grandmaster level.

Playing 1.e4 with White is often associated with having to know reams of opening theory but this does not have to be the case. There are many unusual but playable lines which give White attacking chances whilst avoiding the well trodden paths. Besides the practical advantage of putting Black on his own resources this gives White the opportunity to play creative chess from early on in the game. On this DVD Davies presents a complete repertoire for White comprising unusual but aggressive lines. His suggested repertoire includes 2.Na3 against the Sicilian, 2.f4 against both the French and Pirc and the Fantasy Variation of the Caro-Kann. Video running time: 4 hours. Nigel Davies has been a Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He is an acknowledged expert on the lines presented here, having used them extensively in tournament practice.

Sam Collins
Constructing an opening repertoire is one of the chess player's most difficult and time-consuming tasks. Turned off by masses of theory, many players shy away from critical lines and concentrate on trappy lines, "universal" systems, or variations which concede the advantage of the first move in order to get a playable position.
In this DVD, Sam Collins offers another way. Discussing sound, aggressive lines, all with regular top-level support from GMs Tiviakov, Howell, Pavasovic and others, Collins breaks down each position into its key components and explains the core plans and ideas, together with enough theory to avoid any accidents and catch your opponents by surprise. With over 8 levels of top-class instruction, he helps lay the foundation for a repertoire to last for your whole chess career.
Sam Collins is an International Master from Ireland who made a GM norm in 2008. He has represented his country at five Olympiads, winning a gold medal at Bled in 2002. He is the author of several bestselling opening books and is a regular columnist in chess periodicals. As a coach, he has lectured national junior squads and taught the master class at the renowned Berkeley Chess School. He is a former Irish champion and the reigning champion of Japan.

Many players struggle to find solid openings to play as Black, especially if they have relatively little time to study theory. This DVD addresses this problem, presenting a solid and easy to learn Black repertoire against White's two main opening moves, 1.e4 and 1.d4.
Against both of these moves Nigel Davies advocates 1...e6, which leads to a French Defence after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 or 1.d4 e6 2.e4. This can get quite sharp and theoretical if Black follows the main lines but Davies shows how he can avoid the theory of both 3.Nc3 and 3.Nd2 with GM Oleg Romanishin's patented line, 3...Be7.
After 1.d4 e6 2.c4 Davies recommends another rarely played move, 2...Bb4+, a speciality of the great Paul Keres in his youth and more recently GM Vereslav Eingorn. Against 1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 Black can transpose into a Bogo-Indian with 2...Nf6 3.c4 Bb4+. The presentation is rounded off by showing how Black can meet various Queen's Pawn Games to form a complete, easy to learn yet sound way to play.
Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. He has played the lines presented here in his own games and worked extensively as a chess coach.

Valeri Lilov
How many times have you been caught off guard by a seemingly inferior and unusual opening system that later turns out to be an especially strong one? Unorthodox openings can be a real asset to anyone's opening repertoire and they often do not contain much theory, making them easy to master for your next important tournament. In the present DVD, FM Valeri Lilov devotes 24 lectures to various unorthodox openings - some more popular with super GMs like Alexander Morozevich and others less known - yet all aiming at one and the same goal: to strengthen your opening repertoire and provide you with more weapons for the opening stage. The DVD is naturally divided into two parts and half of the lectures explore openings for White, while the other half focus on great unorthodox systems for Black. The Chigorin Defence, the Chicago Gambit, and Grob's Attack are among the systems included for White. On the other hand, the Hippopotamus Defence and the Elephant Gambit, both for Black, bear the names of frightening animals. FM Valeri Lilov effectively teaches the best plans and ideas in each of these unique openings and guarantees success with each and every one of them.
FM Valeri Lilov also known as Tiger Lilov is one of the most famous and quality online chess coaches that you will see on virtually all major chess websites on the internet. His balanced style of play and constant striving for improvement have both shaped his deep knowledge of chess theory.

Nigel Davies
Creating an opening repertoire can be a difficult and demanding job, especially for those with limited study time. Attempts to implement a lot of new openings at the same time can set a player adrift in a sea of unknown chess patterns. This in turn can have a catastrophic impact on their game.
On this DVD Nigel Davies explains how to go about this process of building a repertoire the right way, with a minimal amount of stress or sweeping wholesale changes. Instead of changing everything at once he proposes that you start out with a Queen's Pawn Opening such as the London System, Torre Attack or Colle System and then build on these openings step by step. After playing 1.d4 and 2.Nf3 you will gradually introduce lines with 3.c4 whilst acquiring an understanding of the middle games this will lead to. Davies makes specific recommendations about which variations you should play and the order in which they should be introduced.
In the final stage of their repertoire development players may wish to switch to 1.d4 and 2.c4, but with the groundwork having been properly laid. At the end of the DVD Davies explains how to go about this and discusses some of the issues involved.
Nigel Davies is an International Grandmaster and highly respected chess coach. He has more than 35 years tournament experience with 1.d4 and has advised many of his students on the repertoire building process.

Nigel Davies
Players with interests and commitments away from the chess board often find it difficult to compete against those with more study time. Their opponents come to the board armed with the latest theory and can bash out moves well into the middle game. On this DVD Nigel Davies addresses this issue by demonstrating a simple and easy-to-learn opening system designed for the busy person. His recommendation of adopting a structure with ...d7-d6, ...c7-c6 and later ...e7-e5 as Black and d2-d3, c2-c3 and e2-e4 as White will enable you to sidestep book lines and reach a middle game position in which native ability is more important. This approach has many advantages, not least of which is that players who have come to rely on memory can play very badly when are no longer able to use it. The strategies presented here can also help develop positional understanding and provide important insights into similar openings such as the King’s Indian Defence.
Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Rapidplay and U21 Champion. He has played the lines presented here in his own games and worked extensively as a chess coach.

Nigel Davies
Vol. 1: 1.e4 Openings
Tricks and traps, especially in the opening, are a dangerous reality of competitive chess. All sorts of surprises await the unwary player, from devastating sacrifices to cunning move order ploys. A knowledge of such ideas is essential if a player wants to be the hunter rather than the victim.
On this DVD Davies presents a variety of tricks and traps that can arise after 1.e4 by White, breaking them down into a number of different categories. The examples are designed to appeal to players of every level and feature all of Black’s main defences. Besides coverage of some of the classics, Davies reveals some little known ploys and explains how likely these traps are to succeed. Accordingly the viewer should gain some psychological insights into the art of trapping and this should help his game as a whole.
Nigel Davies has been an International Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. Besides his playing accomplishments he is an experienced chess coach with a unique understanding of club level chess. Accordingly he knows just what is likely to succeed.

Alexander Bangiev
A few years ago, IM Bangiev published a CD with a Repertoire for White. Since then the author has developed a new method of training, his squares strategy, and three CDs have been published based on it. Consequently, Bangiev has now prepared his long planned CD with a Repertoire for Black along the lines of the terminology and methodology of the squares strategy. The unified system which he suggests is based on a setup with g6, Bg7 and c5, which can easily be applied as a reply to the main white openings.
The author has years of experience with this setup, the benefit of which he now passes on to his students.
The author’s work occupies three databases:
a) Theory: the heart of the new CD with 5 introductory texts, 149 theoretical fragments of games and 36 annotated games from praxis.
b) Reference database with over 100,000 games and an opening key specially developed for this CD.
c) Training database with 166 exercises.
The CD is suitable for club players and contains the ChessBase Reader based on ChessBase 9.
System requirements: Pentium, 32MB RAM, Windows 98SE/2000/Me/XP/Vista. Published 2006
