Johan Hellsten
This book is the follow-up to Johan Hellsten's acclaimed Mastering Chess Strategy. In this new book Hellsten focuses exclusively on opening play. He examines a wide variety of key subjects, including development, the centre, gambit play and punishing opponents' mistakes, providing the reader with a vital foundation in opening strategy.
Just like his previous book, Mastering Opening Strategy is a product of Hellsten's many years' work as a full-time chess teacher, and is specifically designed as part of a structured training programme to improve strategic thinking. In addition to the many examples there is an abundance of carefully selected exercises which allow readers to monitor their progress and put into practice what they have just learned. Following such a course is an ideal way for players of all standards to improve. Although designed mainly for students, this book is also an excellent resource for chess teachers and trainers.
*An essential course in opening strategy
*Includes many exercise games
*Ideal for both chess study and practice
Johan Hellsten is a Grandmaster, a former Swedish Champion and a European Team Championship individual gold medallist. He is a renowned chess teacher and has firmly established himself as a writer with outstanding credentials.

Boris Alterman
The Alterman Gambit Guide: Black Gambits 2 continues to build a gambit based opening repertoire for Black. Volume one considered replies to 1.d4 and 1.c4 and now volume two offers attacking options for Black after 1.e4 or 1.f4. Playing such aggressive gambit lines offers the improving club and tournament player the chance to play dynamic attacking chess while studying the most entertaining gambits. This volume deals with various openings after 1.e4,e5; and 1.f4,e5; and lines covered include: Marshall Attack, Hector Gambit, Traxler Variation, Frankenstein-Dracula Variation, Falkbeer Counter-Gambit and From's Gambit.
The repertoire is explained with illustrative games, text guidance and analysis.
GM Boris Alterman founded the Shevah-Mofet Chess Academy in Israel. Alterman is a product of the Botvinnik-Kasparov chess school and he also helped to develop the Deep Junior program which famously drew a match with Kasparov and defeated both Radjabov and Deep Fritz.

Viacheslav Eingorn
In this book Grandmaster Viacheslav Eingorn recommends a repertoire for Black with 1..e6 after both 1.e4 and 1.d4. Against 1.e4 Black plays the French Defence with the Classical Variation (1.e4,e6; 2.d4,d5; 3.Nc3,Nf6;) being the mainstay after 3.Nc3 for white. He also recommends lines for Black against the Advance, Tarrasch, Steinitz and other White attacks. In critical lines he offers two or more options for Black allowing for readers' different styles of play.
Against 1.d4 he examines the system with 1..e6; 2.c4,Bb4+; with Black delaying the move ..Nf6; in favour of ..c5; or ..b6. If White plays 1.d4,e6; 2.Nf3, Black can transpose to the Sicilian Four Knights with 2..c5; 3.e4, or the English Opening after 3.c4.
If Black is prepared to adopt a flexible approach, and a willingness to try out new structures and ideas, then Eingorn's subtle move-orders are particularly effective as Black can then use his delay in playing ..Nf6; to good effect and take the fight directly to his opponent.
Viacheslav Eingorn is an extremely experienced grandmaster from Odessa (Ukraine), who played regularly and successfully in the Top League of the USSR Championship in the 1980s. He has represented Ukraine many times in team events, winning a gold medal at the 2001 World Team Championship. Eingorn is a FIDE Senior Trainer, and coached the victorious Ukrainian women's team at the 2006 Olympiad.

Larry Kaufman
Grandmaster Larry Kaufman originally intended to write an update to his 2003 book "The Chess Advantage in Black and White" but, since so much has changed in eight years, he ended up writing a whole new book with completely changed repertoires for both White and Black. One thing which has been retained from the original book is the idea of playing the "second best" move in positions where it is not significantly worse than the "best" move. This ensures a dramatic reduction in the amount of theory to be learnt with little impact on the quality of play.
The repertoire this time around features 1.d4 for White with the idea of following up with an early c4. Black's various defences - classical, Indian and hypermodern - are analysed in fifteen chapters. For Black the repertoire is based upon the Grunfeld Defence to 1.d4 and the Breyer Defence to the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) after 1.e4. Flank Openings and 1.e4 offshoots such as the Scotch Game and Italian Game are, naturally, also covered in fifteen chapters.
The quality of analysis is higher than was possible in 2003 due to the vast increase in computer power and also to software improvements in the last eight years.
Larry Kaufman is an American Grandmaster who gained his title after winning the World Senior Championship in 2008. In recent years he has been involved in developing computer chess software, including Rybka.

Jeroen Bosch (Ed)
Secrets of Opening Surprises brings you a wide variety of unusual opening ideas. They may seem outrageous at first sight, but have proven to be perfectly playable.
An SOS deviates very early from the regular lines in a mainstream opening, usually even before move six! That is why it is so easy to actually bring the variation on the board.
You will baffle your opponent without having studied large quantities of stuffy theory.

Strengths and Weaknessess of the Isolated Queen's Pawn
Aaron Nimzowitsch, called the problem of the isolani - his term for the isolated d-pawn - "one of the cardinal problems in the whole theory of positional play". In the present book, on the basis of numerous practical examples, the authors explain the methods of attack and defence in positions with an isolated d-pawn.
The book features positions from just after the opening to deep into the endgame.
