Paul van der Sterren
This book offers an introduction to all the major chess openings beginning with 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4 and 1.Nf3. The more obscure flank openings are restricted to a brief mention.
Whereas reference works such as Modern Chess Openings offer only lists of moves with no explanation, here we find a mixture of ideas and explanations together with the basic variations of each opening. This approach will allow club level players to gain a good understanding of the point of each opening and it's main variations and easily find which openings will suit their style of play. Later on more specialised study will allow them to build a more sophisticated repertoire in a chosen opening.
In addition, the strategies van der Sterren explains will, unlike ever-changing chess opening theory, remain valid as long as chess is played, and so the time spent studying this book will be rewarded many times over.
Grandmaster Paul van der Sterren has won the Dutch Championship on two occasions, and in 1993 reached the Candidates stage of the World Chess Championship. He is an internationally renowned chess writer and editor: he was one of the founding editors of New in Chess, for whose Yearbooks he has contributed more than 150 opening surveys.
Published 2009, softback, 479 pages.

Could a million game databases help people to master the openings? Perhaps, if they worked 25 hours a day, had elephantine memories and were able to separate valuable information from the surrounding chaff!
A century ago, when there were only a few international tournaments a year, openings books were based, not on huge numbers of examples, but rather the main ideas from a few games by leading players.
The Small Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings combines this selective approach with today's exhaustive collection of material.
The five volumes Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings - A, B, C, D, E - consists of 500 sections based on ECO opening codes. Its key quality, unique among openings books, is a system of elimination which helps the reader to find the critical lines in the midst of the abundance of information.
The Small Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings is based on the same 500 fundamental codes and system of elimination but it's a fifth the length. Instead of five books just one! The best and most up to date information. The creative output of generations of chess masters filtered for the reader's convenience.
One of the main problems of tournament play is successfully negotiating the opening. The Small Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings gives easy access to clear and reliable information for the numerous chess players who have competitive ambitions but only limited time to dedicate to chess. While for players with greater competitive experience and chess professionals, the Small Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings offers an ideal repository of information and the exact evaluation of critical lines.
Published 2011, hardback, 672 pages.

This new edition includes 10 new games on opening lines not in the original and hundreds of minor alterations to bring the analysis up-to-date and reflective of modern play. As before this is a more informal coverage than Modern Chess Openings with text explanations and illustrative games replacing the tables of variations found in MCO. This book will give you a flavour of each opening and enough information to start playing it rather than being a complete reference work.
Published 2002, softback, 784 pages.
