Alexander Alekhine dominated the chess scene from 1927 until his death in 1946. Historical picture documents and more than 2000 Alekhine games make the great master come back to life. For the ambitious learner, the CD features two training databases. In topical videos, contemporary grandmasters tell us which of Alekhine's qualities they appreciate most. Gary Kasparov, the world's strongest chess player of our time, says: "My idol in chess is Alexander Alekhine. His chess style corresponds best to the way I want to play chess." Grandmaster Dr Robert Huebner has been the best German chessplayer for 30 years and repeatedly fought for the world championship in candidate tournaments. Viswanathan Anand
Acclaimed as the Fastest Brain in the World, Viswanathan Anand is the world number one and World Champion. Experts rate him as one of the biggest natural talents in the history of the game. In March 2007 he reached the number one spot on the world ranking lists by winning the prestigious Linares tournament. In September 2007 Anand won the World Championship for the second time in his career when in Mexico he became the undisputed World Chess Champion, ending a schism in the chess world which had lasted for many years. If his talent as a rapid chess player is legendary, his records in classical chess have been superlative. In January 2006 he became the only player in the tournament's 70-year history to win the Corus Chess event five times (1989, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2006). He has won the Linares Super Tournament twice (1998 and 2007), the Dortmund GM three times (1996, 2000 and 2004), and countless other important events like, Madrid Masters, Biel, etc.
The first DVD with videos from Anand's chess career reflects the very beginning of that career and goes up to 1999. It starts with his memories of how he first learned chess and shows his first great games (including those from the 1984 World Championship for juniors). The high point of his early developmental phase was the winning of the 1987 WCh for juniors. After that, things continue in quick succession: the first victories over Kasparov, World Championship candidate in both the FIDE and PCA cycles and the high point of the World Championship match against Kasparov in 1995. 3:48 hours playing time.
System requirements: PC, Windows Vista or XP (SP2), DVD-ROM drive, sound card.

The Cuban Jose Raul Capablanca, World chess Champion 1921-1927, was considered at the height of his career to be almost unbeatable and received the nickname: "the chess machine". Even those of his colleagues who reached the chess throne would call him "a genius" (Alekhine) or "the greatest player in the history of chess" (Fischer). This CD came into being as a result of the co-operation between various authors.
Contents:
The main database with all available games by Capablanca, introduced by a biography. Approximately 300 of the games are annotated. The largest contribution to this database was made by Peter Schneider.
An appreciation by Dr Robert Hübner of the 1927 WCh-Match between Capablanca and Alekhine.
An endgame database by GM Mihail Marin. It contains 1 text and 14 games (or parts of games). The Romanian grandmaster focuses on the moment of the transition to the endgame.
A tactics database put together by Martin Seifert. Perhaps there are not so many brilliant combinations known from Capablanca‘s play, but these do exist. The author has put together a database of 103 games, in each of which a training question (or questions) allows you to test and improve your vision.

Robert Hubner
All world champions take an important place in the history of chess. However, none have achieved such popularity outside the chess scene as Robert Fischer. In his short heyday, he did an incredible amount for chess. We have the Fischer clock, Fischer victories (i.e. winning by a large margin), the Fischer disease (opponents falling sick after losing several game in a row) and finally Fischer random chess. Yet his legacy, of course, is the many brilliant games he played.
Dr. Robert Huebner has thoroughly examined Fischer's biggest and best known publication, "My Sixty Memorable Games". Includes tournament reports on Fischer's most important chess matches, including contemporary material.
All features at a glance: about 1,000 games, extensive text and picture material, Fischer videos.

Vlastimil Hort
During his career, Vlastimil Hort, who himself belongs to the same generation as Bobby Fischer, met no less than eight world champions over the board. In the early 60s he crossed swords with Mikhail Tal, and at the end of the eighties he was sitting over the board from Garry Kasparov. Between the two there were meetings with chess legends Botvinnik, Petrosian, Smyslov, Spassky, Fischer and Karpov.
On this DVD the Czech-German grandmaster looks back to these encounters and devotes a chapter to each of the world champions, Thus we have eye-witness accounts which form a personal gallery of chess world champions, during which we get not only a presentation of the games but also details and stories of things which happened off the board and in the wings, as it were. So, for example, Hort tells us about his phone call from Botvinnik, about Bobby Fischer's "frenemy" and describes the shadowy figure of the political minder...
Vlastimil Hort was born in Prague in 1944 and won the grandmaster title in 1965. Among his great successes are the qualification for the WCh Candidates' tournament of 1977 in which he reached the quarter finals in Reykjavik, only just going down to ex world champion Boris Spassky. Hort won the Czech championships on several occasions, and after taking German nationality in 1986 he was also German champion on several occasions. For over 30 years he took part in many chess Olympiads for both of these countries, starting with 1960 in Leipzig, and finishing in 1992 in Manila. Vlastimil Hort is best known to the German public for his appearances with Helmut Pfleger as a team of commentators in TV programs.

Viktor Korchnoi
Volume 2 features about four hours of "Korchnoi live". The great chess legend portrays the second part of his eventful career, presenting among other things his games against Kasparov (1986), Spassky (1989) and Short (1990) in his typical gripping style. Embedded in the game commentaries are many details of Korchnoi’s biography. For instance, before commenting on his game against Spassky, the veteran speaks extensively about his personal relationship towards the ex-world champion. Throughout these lectures you can feel Korchnoi’s ever-enduring love for chess. Whenever the great master gets to the heart of an opening (King’s Indian, English and French) or shows an astonishing move, one can see the joy sparkling from his eyes. No wonder hardly any other chess genius has lived chess as intensively as "Viktor the Terrible".

Vladimir Kramnik
Born in 1975 in Tuapse on the shores of the Black Sea, Vladimir Kramnik studied at the Botvinnik-Kasparov chess school. At 16 he was included in the Russian Olympiad team and scored a sensational 8.5/9, the best result at the Olympiad. After that followed a string of great tournament results, culminating in a world championship challenge. In 2000 Kramnik played the chess legend Garry Kasparov and beat him to take the title, which he successfully defended in 2004 against Peter Leko and 2006 against FIDE champion Veselin Topalov, whom he defeated to take the unified world championship title.
On this DVD Vladimir Kramnik retraces his career from talented schoolboy to World Champion in 2006. With humour and charm he describes his first successes, what it meant to be part of the Russian Gold Medal team at the Olympiad, and how he undertook the Herculean task of beating his former mentor and teacher Garry Kasparov. Kramnik dissects his wins against Leko and Topalov, giving us a vivid impression of the super-dramatic final games of the 2006 match. His commentary is full of useful advice and provides a fascinating insight into the thought processes that govern top level play.
The DVD contains more than six hours of video with narrative and game analysis. There are also five additional segments from an exclusive video interview on the intrigues that surrounded the 2006 world championship, and on the state of the chess world in general.
Published 2007. System requirements: Win XP(SP2)/Vista, sound card, DVD drive.

Emanuel Lasker became world champion in 1894 and kept this title until 1921. These 27 years on the throne are more than enough to yield Lasker a very special place in the history of chess. However, Lasker's fantastic series of tournament successes emphasize his extraordinary position in the chess world even more. Lasker's style wasn't understood by his contemporaries, and misjudgement of his play persists until this day. That's why the ChessBase biography above all takes a very close look at Lasker's chess.
Features at a glance:
- extensive curriculum vitae
- complete collection of all 1182 Lasker games or game fragments available
- informative reports of all significant tournaments
- special reports on Lasker's world championship matches
- special analyses trying to explain Lasker's superiority
- many annotated games
- multimedia database containing interviews (with Averbakh, Baumbach among others) and video clips from lectures held at the Lasker conference in Potsdam (by Hubner, Unzicker, Lilienthal and others).

Paul Morphy: Genius and Myth
The history of chess contains many remarkable stories but none as spectacular as the meteoric rise of Paul Morphy. This CD features an extensive biography, 450 of Morphy's games and a special tactics database. In addition there are expert analyses of Morphy’s playing style, by GMs Karsten Müller and Rainer Knaak, dealing with the interesting question: "How was Morphy superior to this contemporaries?"

Yasser Seirawan
Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan began playing chess in the summer of 1972 and by 1979 he had won the World Junior Championship and in January of 1980 earned his final Grandmaster norm. Alexei Shirov
If you want to win with Black, you must decide which is the best strategy to achieve your aim. Should you take risks and go for the win right from move one, or should you patiently set about achieving equality and then wait for mistakes by White? Which opening should you choose and what is the role played by opening preparation? What can you do when you even have to win with Black, because, e.g., a match can only be saved by a win with Black in the very last game - a situation which has become all the more familiar because of the ever-rising number of knock-out tournaments? Alexei Shirov tries to answer these questions by referring to his own games as Black. In doing so, he describes how his own attitude to this problem has changed over his career, right up to his successes in the 2007 World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, in which he reached the final. Video running time: 6 h 45 m.
System requirements: Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows XP/Vista, DVD drive, mouse, soundcard. Published 2008

Nigel Short
Nigel David Short is generally regarded as the strongest British grandmaster of the 20th century. Born on June 1st 1965 he started out as a chess prodigy, first attracting media attention by beating Viktor Korchnoi and Tigran Petrosian in simultaneous exhibitions at the age of ten and twelve years respectively. At the age of 14 he became the youngest IM in history, breaking Bobby Fischer's previous record, and at 16 he came second (to Garry Kasparov) at the under 20 World Junior Championship in Dortmund. In 1985 Nigel became Britian’s first ever candidate for the World Championship, and in 1993 he made it all the way to the final by beating Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman. He only lost to World Champion Garry Kasparov in the title match in London. Since then he has remained active at the highest levels of competitive chess, but has also become a chess columnist, commentator and also a coach for promising young talents. He is considered one of the most entertaining and outspoken personalities in the chess world. In his DVDs "Greatest Hits" Nigel takes us on an electrifying journey through a very rich chess career, which saw him beat no less than twelve world champions. His experience in tournaments and matches all over the world - Short has visited a total of 89 countries - can be seen in the narratives that precede the games which he annotates with humour and instructive insights.

Thorsten Heedt
William Steinitz became the first official world champion by winning a match against Zukertort in 1886 and then held the title until 1894. Furthermore, Steinitz enjoyed (and still enjoys) a reputation as the founder of the positional school of chess, the basic principles of which have kept their validity in modern times. Applying them, Steinitz was far superior to his contemporaries in practical play. Thorsten Heedt’s biography features a comprehensive portrait of the first world champion. An important part is played by the stations of his life: Prague, Vienna, London and finally America (Philadelphia as well as New York) are the places where Steinitz settled down. Naturally, also his 5 matches for the world championship are fully covered. Short texts about "appearance and constitution" as well as "character and manners" complete the picture of the first world champion.
Features at a glance
* more than 1,000 games
* 42 texts
* database with training questions
* database with special topics such as Steinitz’s provocative openings.

The meteoric tempo with which the young Tal took the chess world by storm at the end of the 50s and seized the world champion’s title from Botvinnik in 1960, was already sufficient to grant him a special place in the world of chess. But more than this, it was the art of his attacking play which conquered the hearts of chess fans all over the world. Despite his short reign on the throne, Tal thus became a legend during his own lifetime. Johannes Sondermann, author of the biographical part of this CD, has painted an objective portrait of the world champion's character. During his extensive research, he also interviewed Tal's widow - the video is on this CD- and so reveals a lot about the "private" Tal as well.

additional historic videos
