Daniel King
The English Defence arises after 1.c4,b6 or 1.d4,e6; 2.c4,b6. The author does not recommend Owen’s Defence (1.e4,b6) and it is not included here. This book, based around 79 complete, annotated games with the different variations being covered in eight chapters is an excellent introduction to playing the defence. Each chapter has a summary of variations which refers the reader to the relevant game whilst the introduction explains the basic tactical and strategic ideas involved. Chapters 1-5 explain how to play if White occupies the centre and chapters 6-8 look at more cautious approaches by the first player.

Ilia Odessky
A highly entertaining and thorough analysis of the opening variation 1.d4,e6; 2.c4,b6; The main focus of attention is 3.e4 with which White attempts to crush Black. However, as Odessky shows, things are far from clear. The main point of Black's opening is that White is forced to think for himself and is also faced with specific tactical challenges from an early stage. The repertoire is illustrated through a mixture of text and annotated games. The author, not relying solely on his own store of words, constantly invokes the classics, citing them right, left and centre. Characters from world literature and even departed personalities strive to take an active part in the analysis of variations! Ilia Odessky is a journalist and International Chess Master.

Richard Palliser
The Trompowsky Attack (1.d4,Nf6; 2.Bg5), thanks to the efforts and innovations of Grandmasters such as Michael Adams and Julian Hodgson, has been fine-tuned into a powerful attacking weapon and today it is seen as an important main-line opening in its own right. The Trompowsky allows White to sidestep all of Black's major defensive systems such as the Nimzo-Indian and King's Indian and lead play into positions of his own choosing from move two onwards. In this book, Richard Palliser studies the Trompowsky by going back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them. In seven chapters he shows how to combat Black's replies 2..d5; 2..e6; 2..g6; 2..c5; and 2..Ne4; with a combination of analysis, verbal explanation and complete, annotated games. The Starting Out series has firmly established itself as a leading guide for club and tournament players wishing to take up a new opening. These books are distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, the lucid explanations of the fundamentals, and the abundance of notes, tips and warnings to help the reader absorb vital ideas.
Richard Palliser is an International Master and a chess author highly respected for his thoroughness and objectivity.

Cyrus Lakdawala
International Master Cyrus Lakdawala presents a repertoire for White bassed on the Veresov Opening (1.d4,d5; 2.Nc3,Nf6; 3.Bg5). The author also includes hostile Veresov-related options against other Black defences such as the French, Caro-Kann, Dutch, Schmid and Czech Benoni, Pirc and Philidor.
The repertoire is illustrated using 105 key games in eleven chapters with plenty of advice and explanation throughout. The Veresov is an ideal opening for the club player, being both aggressive in nature and not widely used at Grandmaster level.
Cyrus Lakdawala is an International Master, a former National Open and American Open Champion, and a six-time State Champion. He has been teaching chess for over 30 years, and coaches some of the top junior players in the US.

Nigel Davies
The Veresov is a surprisingly tricky system that, in the right hands, can be a powerful attacking weapon. White forgoes the normal queen’s pawn opening ideas in favour of speedy development of the queenside pieces by playing 1.d4 & 2.Nc3. One advantage of this is that players with the black pieces are less likely to be familiar with all the subtleties here than in a more mainstream opening.
In this book, Grandmaster Nigel Davies delves into the secrets of the opening, explaining both the tactical and positional ideas, and highlighting the main plans for both sides. He uses 80 annotated games in ten chapters to examine the highways and byways of the Veresov. The main part of the book is devoted to 1.d4,Nf6; 2.Nc3,d5; 3.Bg5 but the final two chapters look at Black's alternatives such as 1..d5. Explanations and chapter summaries help keep the reader's eye on the ball throughout.

Attila Schneider & Tamas Erdelyi
This book explores the system arising out of 1.d4,Nd6; 2.Nf3,c5; 3.d5. White's idea is to avoid playing c4 but, instead, control d5 with pieces and avoid sharp lines such as the Modern Benoni or Benko Gambit. After an introduction in which the ideas of the system are discussed there follow 50 chapters, each with an annotated game, which analyse the lines of play open to both sides. The majority of coverage is given to 3..g6; and 3..b5; for Black but games featuring 3..e6; and 3..d6; are included.

Timothy Taylor
The Budapest Gambit (1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,e5;) is an ambitious attempt by Black to seize the initiative and secure rapid development at the cost of a pawn.
In this book I.M. Timothy Taylor presents his own analysis on the Budapest and comes to the conclusion that 1) it is sound at the highest level and 2) it is not easy to play! In the three main sections of this book Taylor examines White's most important options, after 3.dxe5, Ng4; including Alekhine's 4.e4, 4.Nf3 and 4.Bf4. Part four deals with the gambit declined, quiet 4th moves, and the (unsound) Fajarowicz Gambit. Using 81 illustrative games, Taylor offers his own up-to-date judgement on the state of the Budapest Gambit, makes recommendations on the best options for Black and White, and covers the typical plans for both sides.
Timothy Taylor is an American International Master who is renowned for his original analysis of offbeat openings. He has also written books on the Bird's Opening and the Ponziani Opening.

Viktor Moskalenko
The Budapest Gambit (1.d5,Nf6; 2.c4,e5;) has always been regarded as a complicated but ultimately unsound defence. However this has not prevented Ukranian Grandmaster Viktor Moskalenko from employing it with success on several occasions. In this book he includes analysis and annotated games in five chapters which cover all variations of the Budapest including the main lines, the Fajarowicz System and the gambit declined. He explains the plans available to both White and Black and shows that the Budapest deserves to be treated as a respectable option for Black as well as a dangerous surprise weapon. The author is a Ukranian Grandmaster and former Ukranian champion.

Alexander Cherniaev & Eduard Prokuronov
The traditional Old Indian Defence begins 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,d6; 3.Nc3 Nbd7; and Black aims to play the move 4..e5; at the cost of a somewhat cramped position. In this new interpretation of the Old Indian, Russian Grandmaster Alexander Cherniaev recommends that Black plays 3..e5; immediately, thus leaving the b8 knight ready to take up a more attacking position. In this repertoire book for Black Cherniaev looks at some new ideas after both 4.Nf3 and White's alternative 4th moves. He also shows how to handle the Black pieces after 3.Nf3. To complete the repertoire part 2 of the book considers set-ups for White, without c2-c4, and also White's alternatives on move 2 such as 2.Nc3 and 2.Bg5.
Coverage is via 32 complete, annotated games with explanation of ideas and analysis of various lines of play at both sides' disposal.
Alexander Cherniaev is a Russian Grandmaster, journalist and author. He is an experienced player and has enjoyed numerous tournament successes, including winning the silver medal at the Moscow Championship and competing in the prestigious Hastings Premier Tournament.
Eduard Prokuronov is a FIDE Master and a many-time Champion of the Arkhangelsk region of Russia.
