SAFEST SICILIAN (2nd Edition) SAFEST SICILIAN (2nd Edition)(CODE x8267)
Alexander Delchev & Semko Semkov
The Bulgarian partnership of GM Alexander Delchev and IM Semko Semkov present a Black repertoire after 1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,e6 based on the Taimanov System of the Sicilian Defence. (1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,e6; 3.d4,cxd4; 4.Nxd4,Nc6;) Includes Nb5 + c4 systems for White as well as all other open variations (after 5.Nc3, 5..Qc7 is advocated) and Anti-Sicilian lines with 3.c3, 3.d3, 3.b3, 3.b4, 3.Nc3, 3.Qe2 and 3.c4. The layout of each chapter features a Quick Repertoire, briefly explaining Black's ideas, Step by Step, with more in depth analysis and Complete Games with illustrative games for that chapter. In all, 66 complete games are included. For the second edition the authors have added new lines for Black against the English Attack, Classical System and Alapin 2.c3 System. The authors' aim is to build a flexible and sound Black repertoire without the associated theoretical baggage of the Najdorf, Dragon or Sveshnikov systems.

FLEXIBLE FRENCH FLEXIBLE FRENCH(CODE n1245)
Viktor Moskalenko
The French Defence is one of the most popular chess openings at all levels. Many of its lines, however, are over-played, over-explored, and therefore overloaded with book theory. Here the author looks at some new and creative ways of playing in the main lines of the French. The idea is to build a repertoire for Black, but some sharp ideas for White are also considered. The material is presented via 75 annotated games - some classic, some modern - in four main sections covering the Advance, Tarrasch, Classical and Winawer systems. A final chapter "Seven Samurai Swords" shows some of the author's latest French Defence ideas in practice. For each recommended line the author explains the historical origins of the variation and the main ideas and resources, presents his own analysis and shows the variation in practice with illustrative games. The Flexible French is a refreshing break from the well-trodden paths, and provides a selection of unusual but very playable ideas. Ukranian Grandmaster Viktor Moskalenko is well known as a champion of anti-dogmatic chess, and has selected some radical but practical variations for both Black and White.

EASIEST SICILIAN EASIEST SICILIAN(CODE x8266)
Atanas Kolev & Trajko Nedev
This book presents a Black repertoire with 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6, based on the most aggressive Sveshnikov lines. The, somewhat strange, title of "Easiest Sicilian" comes about because the authors believe that the Sveshnikov is easy to include in your repertoire and strategically simple! As well as recommending a Black repertoire in the Sveshnikov the book also offers ideas against the Rossolimo (3 Bb5) and Alapin (3 c3 systems). The main body of the book is devoted to the Chelyabinsk variation (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nf6 5 Nc3 e5 6 Ndb5 d6 7 Bg5 a6 8 Na3 b5 and now either 9.Nd5 or 9.Bxf6). The authors propose major novelties in practically all topical lines and the repertoire avoids solid, but passive variations. They are left for backup lines while the authors' recommendation goes for the most challenging options. "Currently I do not see any serious theoretical problems for Black" claims Kolev in the foreword. In the Rossolimo the authors also share completely new ideas, developed by them after 3..Nf6; for Black. The layout of the book follows other Chess Stars books with each chapter having "Quick Repertoire", "Step-by-Step" and "Complete Games" sections. The material is up-to-date to April 10, 2008.
Atanas Kolev is a Bulgarian Grandmaster. Trajko Nedev is a Grandmaster from FYR Macedonia.

STARTING OUT: THE MODERN STARTING OUT: THE MODERN(CODE p4566)
Nigel Davies
In this introduction to the Modern Defence (1.e4,g6;) Grandmaster Nigel Davies shows how to play Black against the many attacking options available to White. He goes back to basics, introducing the key moves and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them. The material is presented using 58 annotated, illustrative games (many from his own practice), chosen for their instructional value. He also passes on his own experience with explanations, tips and warnings throughout the book. He advocates systems with ..d6 and ..c5 or ..d6 and ..e5 for Black as offering most ocunter-play.
Davies includes chapters on countering The Austrian Attack, Bg5 systems, h4 systems, Be3 lines, The Averbakh System, Bc4 systems, c3 systems, The Classical 4.Nf3 and g2-g3 systems for White.
The Modern Defence is a dynamic, ambitious and universal opening, one that can be used against virtually every system White can play. Black's provocative strategy is based upon allowing White to construct an imposing pawn centre in the anticipation that a well-timed strike will bring about its downfall. Both sides play for high stakes: White can hope to succeed with a direct attack or to squash Black with a space advantage, while Black will aim to destroy White's centre and mop up the remains. All in all this can lead to intriguing battles in which one slip from either side is often fatal.
The Starting Out series has firmly established itself as the leading guide to studying openings for up-and-coming players. These books are distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, the lucid explanations of the fundamentals, and the abundance of notes, tips and warnings to help the reader absorb vital ideas. Starting Out opening books are ideal for enthusiastic chess players who have little experience of the openings in question and who wish to appreciate the essential principles behind them.
Nigel Davies is both an experienced Grandmaster and chess trainer. A former British Open Quickplay Champion, Davies is the author of several successful chess books.

OPENING FOR WHITE ACCORDING TO ANAND VOL. 10 OPENING FOR WHITE ACCORDING TO ANAND VOL. 10(CODE x8264)
Alexander Khalifman
Volume 10 is devoted almost entirely to the Chelyabinsk Variation of the Sicilian Sveshnikov (1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.d4,cxd4; 4.Nxd4,Nf6; 5.Nc3,e5; 6.Ndb5.d6; 7.Bg5,a6; 8.Na3,b5; 9.Nd5,Be7; 10.Bxf6,Bxf6; 11.c3) Deviations along the way, including the playable 8..Be6; are analysed in part 1 whilst part 2 concentrates on the main line. Khalifman states that, whilst the Sveshnikov remains unrefuted, he has unearthed some new ideas in his analysis which will set serious problems for Black. As always with this series the content is up-to-date and of high quality. Each chapter concludes with a summary of current theory.

STARTING OUT: SICILIAN GRAND PRIX ATTACK STARTING OUT: SICILIAN GRAND PRIX ATTACK(CODE p4547)
Gawain Jones
The Grand Prix Attack is 1.e4,c5; 2.Nc3,Nc6/d6/e6; 3.f4 and offers White attacking chances without having to enter the theoretical jungle which the Open Sicilian has become. White plans a kingside attack with moves such as f4-f5, Qe1-h4, Bc1-h6 and Nf3-g5. This is both direct and often difficult to meet as it is in keeping with the pawn structure. Alternatively White can choose to play Bb5 and Bxc6, hoping to double Black's pawns and play against his weakened queenside. In this book Grandmaster Gawain Jones shows how to play the key systems of the Grand Prix Attack including Black's defences with 2..Nc6; 2..d6; and 2..e6. He looks at lines for White with Bc4 and Bb5 considering both the plans outlined above and shows how both sides ought to approach the positions arising. He includes 36 complete, annotated games with a wealth of strategic and tactical hints and tricks highlighted. An ideal first book for any club or tournament player wishing to take up the Grand Prix Attack or needing a defence against it. Gawain Jones is a young Grandmaster who made his debut for England at the 2007 European Team Championships.
