PLAY THE ALEKHINE

PLAY THE ALEKHINE

 New

Ref: g5415

Price: £12.99

Valentin Bogdanov
The Alekhine Defence (1.e4, Nf6;) is one of the most forcing and aggressive reply to 1.e4. Black immediately forces the pace and drags the game onto his own favoured territory. This strategy is not without risk, but those who specialize in the Alekhine find that the opening has a real practical sting and quick-strike potential.
This book is not an encyclopaedia on the Alekhine but explains the important ideas behind the defence with emphasis on the main lines and systems which have undergone development in recent years. The coverage is even-handed, with several interesting ideas considered for both sides.
Material is presented in the form of 26 extensively annotated key games in seven chapters.
1 White Does Not Play 2 e5
2 The Chase Variation
3 The Four Pawns Attack
4 The Old Main Line: 4 Nf3 Bg4
5 The New Main Line and 4th Move Alternatives
6 Exchange Variation
7 2 e5 Nd5: 3 Nc3 and Other Moves

The author, International Master Valentin Bogdanov, has a wealth of experience with the Alekhine, having played it over the course of more than three decades. Moreover, he was active in Odessa chess at the time when the Alekhine was extensively developed by a group of players including GM Semion Palatnik and three-time US Champion Lev Alburt. Thus he provides us not only with the benefit of his own accumulated wisdom, but also with insights gleaned from work with some of the greatest Alekhine devotees of all time.

Ivan Sokolov
Ruy Lopez Revisited explores some offbeat defences to the Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game) with which Black can take the fight to White from an early stage. The idea is to take the game into channels where Black is better prepared than his opponent. Grandmaster Ivan Sokolov recommends several different defences - some safe, some more risky - which together create a repertoire against the Ruy Lopez. Although this is a repertoire book for Black Sokolov has remained objective in his assessments and also includes "some crushing novelties for White!"
The book is in 6 parts:
Part 1: Jaenisch Gambit (Schliemann Defence 3..f5)
Part 2: Delayed Jaenisch Gambit (3..a6; 4.Ba4, f5)
Part 3: Cozio Variation (3..Nge7)
Part 4: Smyslov Variation (3..g6)
Part 5: Bird's Defence (3..Nd4)
Part 6: Classical Variation (3..Bc5)
Ivan Sokolov is a top grandmaster who was born in Bosnia in 1968 and has been living in the Netherlands for many years. He was Yugoslav champion in 1988 and Dutch champion in 1995 and 1998. Sokolov has beaten former world champions Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik as well as current world champion Viswanathan Anand. He is also author of the popular "Winning Chess Middlegames"

Grigory Bogdanovich
This system (1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3,Nf6;) was first played by Nimzowitsch in 1911but remains obscure to this day with few devotees and very little literature on the subject. International Master Grigory Bogdanovich has been playing the 2..Nf6 Sicilian for 30 years and has distilled his experience of the opening into this manual.
Using a combination of analysis, explanation and key games he offers an objective evaluation of the 2..Nf6 Sicilian. Part one of his book considers lines where White does not play 3.e5. Part two examines the tricky 3.e5, Nd5; 4.d4 system as well as Larsen's 3.e5,Nd5; 4.Nc3, e6; defence. Part three looks at the key line 3.e5,Nd5; 4.Nc3,Nxc3; whilst the concluding chapters explain how to link the opening to the middlegame and how to handle the typical pawn structures. A chapter of annotated reference games ends the book.

Jesus de la Villa
This book offers a repertoire for White against the Sicilian Defence with 1.e4,c5; 2.Nf3, and 3.d4. The author recommends meeting main line Sicilians (e.g.Najdorf, Scheveningen, Dragon etc) with main line attacks as these are most likely to offer an advantage. Secondary defences, usually your opponent's pet system, are met with secondary attacks, so the element of surprise remains on your side and unsound variations are met with the refutation!
Grandmaster and twice Spanish Champion Jesus de la Villa uses a combination of analysis, explanation, complete games and chapter summaries to provide a comprehensive and well laid out repertoire for White against one of the most popular Black defences. Each variation is clearly organized with its history, ideas, statistics, examples of tactics and strategies, and instructive games.
