Richard Palliser
The Tango (or Black Knights' Tango) is an sharp, unorthodox defence to 1.d4, arising after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,Nc6; which leads to unbalanced positions in which creative players can flourish. In this, the most comprehensive book yet on the Tango, International Master Richard Palliser studies the main lines and more obscure variations in nine chapters. He examines White's 3rd move alternatives 3.Nf3, 3.Nc3, 3.d5 and 3.g3 showing how best Black can counter these and develop his own play. On of the main advantages of the Tango is that it takes White out of his preparation and forces him to think from move three onwards. It is thus an ideal weapon for club and tournament players alike.
Pub. 2005, softback, 192 pages.

Richard Palliser, Tony Kosten & James Vigus
In this book, three renowned opening experts get together to take a revolutionary look at Flank Openings from both Black's and White's viewpoint. Focusing on 1.c4, 1.Nf3 and 1.f4, they concentrate on fresh or little-explored variations, selecting a wealth of "dangerous" options for both colours. After 1.c4, for example, we have Nimzowitsch's 4.e4 idea for White and a line for Black in the Keres System (..e5; ..c6;) with ..Na6. The mighty Mikenas Attack and the Kasparov Gambit are overhauled whilst an Improved Lowenthal System and a means of Slaying the Slav are considered. After 1.Nf3 watch out for Kramer's Gambit amongst other ideas, whilst after 1.f4 the authors examine Larsen's Antidote to From's Gambit and the Polar Bear Attack. Plenty of new ideas and food for thought here! Whether playing White or Black, a study of this book will leave you confident and fully-armed, and your opponents running for cover!
Dangerous Weapons is a series of opening books which supply the reader with an abundance of hard-hitting ideas to revitalize his or her opening repertoire. Many of the carefully chosen weapons are innovative, visually shocking, incredibly tricky, or have been unfairly discarded; they are guaranteed to throw even your most experienced opponents off balance.
International Master Richard Palliser, Grandmaster Tony Kosten and FIDE Master James Vigus are all well respected authors who are well known for their opening ideas and expertise.

Richard Palliser
This repertoire book offers some ideas for Black to play against unusual and not-so-unusual first moves. Against the English 1.c4, Palliser recommends the symmetrical 1..c5; whilst against 1.Nf3, he gives the alternatives 1..c5; 1..d5; and 1..Nf6. Other openings surveyed include the Bird (1.f4), the Nimzo-Larsen (1.b3), the Sokolsky (1.b4), 1.Nc3, 1.g3, & 1.g4. Move orders are discussed and sometimes more than one Black option is included to suit players of differing styles and repertoires. The title of the book is perhaps slightly misleading as about half of it is taken up with the Symmetrical English and a quarter with 1.Nf3, neither of which are paticularly rare. "Unusual" has been taken to mean "not 1.e4 or 1.d4" so maybe "Beating the Flank Openings" would have been closer to the mark. As usual the material is well researched and organised by I.M. Richard Palliser who is quickly gaining a reputation as a diligent chess writer.

Harald Keilhack
An extensive analysis of the Van Geet Opening 1.Nc3 with analysis and explanation of all major variations via 99 thoroughly annotated games. The author avoids recommending moves which transpose into well known openings and concentrates instead on lines of play with independent significance, including several off-beat lines against semi-open defences like the Alekhine, French and Caro-Kann. Chapters: I. 1.Nc3, e5; II. The Van Geet Attack: 1.Nc3,d5; 2.e4,d4; 3.Nce2, III. 1.Nc3,d5; 2.e4,dxe4; 3.Nxe4, IV. The False Semi Open Games (1.Nc3,d5; 2.e4,c6/e6/Nf6; V. Against the Sicilian 1.Nc3,c5; VI. Alternative Systems, VII. Various Defences. FM Harald Keilhack explains the basic structures of the opening which supply huge scope for creativity. There is also a broad discussion of move order subtleties and transposition issues. Playing 1.Nc3 is an excellent way to get off the beaten path of opening theory.

Nick Conticello & Yury Lapshun
1.b4 allows the first player to take the game into relatively unkown territory, where creativity counts for more than memory, and forces Black players onto their own devices. In this book, Yury Lapshun and Nick Conticello take an in-depth look at 1 b4 with analysis and 84 complete, annotated games. The authors provide a practical and fun-to-play repertoire for White, offering options against all of Black's main possibilities, including the major defences with ..e5; and ..d5; as well as Queen's Indian, Dutch and more unorthodox systems for Black. Yuri Lapshun is an International Master, originally from the Ukraine. Co-author Nick Conticello is a US Master, journalist and chess organiser.

Ilya Odessky
The Nimzo-Larsen Attack 1.b3 remains a relatively unexplored opening system with plenty of scope for creativity and new ideas. Russian IM Ilya Odessky's book is brimming with ideas, suggestions and unanswered questions which offer food for thought as he explains his fascination with 1.b3. In 23 highly idiosyncratic and entertaining chapters Odessky examines Black's main responses, ,1..e5; 1..d5; 1..Nf6; and Dutch Systems involving ..f5; at some point. He devotes three chapters to examples of former World Champion Tigran Petrosian's games with 1.b3, which involve some highly original strategies. Odessky's book contains a balance of text explanation, analysis and part or full games illustrating 1.b3 in action. He maintains an objective view throughout, not trying to claim that White is better after move 1! Ilya Odessky is a Russian International Master, chess coach and author of a book on the English Defence which bears a strong resemblance to the Nimzo-Larsen Attack.

Byron Jacobs & Jonathan Tait
The Nimzo-Larsen Attack is a rarely played opening system which leads to complex and original positions favouring the more creative player. This is an examination in three parts of this system which begins with 1.b3 or 1.Nf3, 2.b3. Coverage is via 69 annotated games which illustrate the key lines of play. Part one covers 1.b3,e5; which can be considered the main line. Part two examines the reversed Nimzo-Indian, 1.Nf3, d5; 2.b3 whilst part three investigates 1..c5; 1..g6; and other such defences. A well researched book judging from the large, quoted bibliography and the authors refreshingly do not attempt to claim that White is winning in all variations!

Timothy Taylor
I.M. Timothy Taylor has been playing the Bird's Opening (1.f4) throughout his chess career and thinks it's about time more players took up the opening which is, after all, a Dutch Defence with an extra tempo! In this book he explains the ideas behind the Bird's and shows how best to play against Black's main defensive setups. In three sections he analyses Reversed Dutch Systems, From's Gambit and Sicilian and Unusual Defences. Presentation is by means of 53 extensively annotated games organised into eleven chapters. Taylor offers his own recommendations on strategy and move order throughout, based on his own practical experience with the opening. He examines both the Classical Bird (f4,e3,Nf3,Be2) and the fianchetto Bird with b3 for White, giving enough material to enable the reader to make the choice of which system to play. International Master Timothy Taylor is author of How to Defeat the Smith Morra Gambit and directed the film Wicked Pursuits.
