OPENING FOR WHITE ACCORDING TO ANAND: VOL. 5 OPENING FOR WHITE ACCORDING TO ANAND: VOL. 5(CODE x8244)
Alexander Khalifman

Volume five in the series is devoted to more obscure Black defences to 1.e4. Part one examines 1..a6; and 1..b6; part two analyses the Nimzowitsch Defence 1..Nc6. Part three is devoted to Alekhine's Defence 1..Nf6; whilst part four considers 1.e4,e6; 2.d4, where Black does not play 2..d5. As usual the fourteenth World Champion Alexander Khalifman offers a repertoire for White based on his own analysis (the praxis of Anand being very limited in these rare openings) and offers his own conclusions at the end of each of the sixteen chapters. This book maintains the standard set in what is an excellent series.
Pub. 2005, softback, 255 pages.

CENTER COUNTER DEFENSE - PORTUGUESE VARIATION CENTER COUNTER DEFENSE - PORTUGUESE VARIATION(CODE s4610)
Selby Anderson

The Portuguese variation arises after 1.e4,d5; 2.exd5,Nf6; 3.d4,Bg4; and aims to avoid positions (after the alternative 3...Nxd5;) which allow White an easy spatial advantage with 4.Nf3. After 3...Bg4 there is no easy life for White! He must choose between 4.f3, compromising his kingside, 4.Nf3, when Black’s bishop is aggressively placed and 4.Bb5+ inviting complications after 4...Nbd7 or the sharp 4...c6!? This book contains original (computer aided) analysis and many game fragments to illustrate each line and also includes a chapter on White’s alternative 3rd moves: Nf3, Nc3, Bb5, and c4 when the Icelandic Gambit (3...e6) is recommended.

ESSENTIAL CENTER COUNTER ESSENTIAL CENTER COUNTER(CODE t1022)
Andrew Martin

This easy-to-follow guide to the Centre Counter is based around 36 recently played, annotated games and offers a repertoire for Black based on the opening moves 1.e4,d5; 2.exd5,Qxd5. In part one (chapters 1-4) author Andrew Martin considers Whites 2nd, 3rd and 4th move alternatives before coming on to the main lines in part two (chapters 5-10). The emphasis is on understanding plans and ideas rather than theoretical completeness and this is very much a book aimed at building a reliable repertoire for the practical player with limited time for research. Andrew Martin is an English I.M. and author of several chess books and videos.

SCANDINAVIAN (2nd Ed) SCANDINAVIAN (2nd Ed)(CODE p4375)
John Emms

This updated edition of Emms 1997 best seller is overdue because of the explosion in popularity of the Scandinavian since 1997. The Scandinavian 1.e4,d5 is popular at club and tournament level because White has no way of avoiding it after 1.e4 and it leads to an essentially sound game for Black. Here via 72 complete, annotated games GM Emms takes us through all the sub-variations of the Scandinavian. The book has two main parts, 2..Qxd5 and 2.. Nf6 and offers coverage of all the main lines as well as the Icelandic Gambit, Portuguese Variation and the Scandinavian Gambit. John Emms is an English Grandmaster.

SCANDINAVIAN DEFENSE: THE DYNAMIC 3..Qd6 SCANDINAVIAN DEFENSE: THE DYNAMIC 3..Qd6(CODE r9011)
Michael Melts

1.e4,d5; 2.exd5,Qxd5; 3.Nc3,Qd6!? is a rare bird in tournament play as many players fear that the queen can be easily attacked by Bf4 or Nb5. However, in the extensive analysis contained here, Correspondence I.M. Melts demonstrates that 3..Qd6 is a viable, and sometimes venomous, alternative to 3..Qa5 and 3..Qd8. The six main sections of this book, each examining a different White set-up, contain analysis, hundreds of game fragments and 40 complete games in the line. A very thorough book with enough information to make the 3..Qd6 Scandinavian your main defence to 1.e4.
