Andrew Greet
In Play the Ruy Lopez IM Andrew Greet provides a repertoire for White based on the Worrall Attack (5.Qe2). In this carefully researched book, packed with ideas, Greet has checked all previous analysis himself and included many new ideas and recommendations as well as explanation of typical strategies for both sides. Before examining the Worrall Attack the book provides lines of play for White against Black's 3rd and 4th move alternatives such as the Bird, Steinitz, Cozio and Schliemann defences and the deferred versions of these (after 3..a6,4.Ba4). In an impressive and very readable first book the author has delivered a well researched and comprehensive repertoire for White after 1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.Bb5. Andrew Greet is an English International Master, chess coach and one of the UK's most rapidly improving players.

Sverre Johnsen & Leif Johannessen
This book is a complete guide to handling the black side of the Lopez, based principally around the Zaitsev Variation, upon which Anatoly Karpov relied during much of his career. This line leads to sharp play, often in open battles where Black gains active counterplay and challenges White to seize the initiative on the kingside. The authors explain in detail how Black can weather the storm. They also explain how Black can handle the practical problem of the Ng5 repetition, and recommend reliable procedures against White's other options in the Lopez, starting off with the Exchange Variation, and moving on to a variety of closed systems.
The book is in four parts: the introduction explains some fundamental tactics and strategies in the Lopez, part two is an analysis of the Zaitsev System, part three looks at White's eight and ninth move alternatives and part four examines exhange and delayed exchange Lopez systems. Throughout, the emphasis is on what readers actually need to know and understand in order to play the opening successfully in practice. There is a great deal of explanation of important ideas, and the authors take pains to guide their readers away from potential pitfalls.
Sverre Johnsen is a FIDE-rated player from Norway. He is an enthusiastic chess analyst, researcher and writer. Leif Johannessen is a young grandmaster, also from Norway. The quality of his opening preparation is shown by the fact that he won the prize for most important theoretical novelty in Informator 92.

Ivan Sokolov
Ruy Lopez Revisited explores some offbeat defences to the Ruy Lopez (Spanish Game) with which Black can take the fight to White from an early stage. The idea is to take the game into channels where Black is better prepared than his opponent. Grandmaster Ivan Sokolov recommends several different defences - some safe, some more risky - which together create a repertoire against the Ruy Lopez. Although this is a repertoire book for Black Sokolov has remained objective in his assessments and also includes "some crushing novelties for White!"
The book is in 6 parts:
Part 1: Jaenisch Gambit (Schliemann Defence 3..f5)
Part 2: Delayed Jaenisch Gambit (3..a6; 4.Ba4, f5)
Part 3: Cozio Variation (3..Nge7)
Part 4: Smyslov Variation (3..g6)
Part 5: Bird's Defence (3..Nd4)
Part 6: Classical Variation (3..Bc5)
Ivan Sokolov is a top grandmaster who was born in Bosnia in 1968 and has been living in the Netherlands for many years. He was Yugoslav champion in 1988 and Dutch champion in 1995 and 1998. Sokolov has beaten former world champions Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik as well as current world champion Viswanathan Anand. He is also author of the popular "Winning Chess Middlegames"

John Shaw
The Ruy Lopez is one of the most famous of all chess openings. It has a long and distinguished history and has been played by virtually all of the strongest Grandmasters: Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand .. the list goes on! From very early on White activates pieces, takes the initiative and sets about building a dominant centre. In this user-friendly book, John Shaw goes back to basics, studying the fundamental principles of the Ruy Lopez and its many variations. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, warnings and exercises to help the improving player, while key strategies, ideas and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated. The five chapters are Third Move Options for Black, Fourth Move Options, Fifth/Sixth Move Options, Marshall Attack and Rare Closed Lines and Main Line Closed Ruy Lopez. This allows coverage of all the important defensive systems at Black's disposal. Shaw does not attempt a comprehensive coverage but selects a few lines of play in each variation to illustrate some of the underlying ideas. The eighty illustrative games around which the text is based are bang up-to-date being taken mostly from 2001 and 2002.

Variations without 3..a6 can be solid (Berlin Defence, Steinitz Defence) or more risky (Schliemann Defence, Classical Defence) allowing player's of all styles to find a system to suit them. With these systems Black avoids both the main line Spanish and the drawish Exchange Variation and directs the game along his own channels. For this book Flear examines 3..f5, 3..Nf6, 3..Bc5, 3..d6, 3..Nd4, 3..Nge7 and 3..g6 through the medium of 53 complete, annotated games. The emphasis is on ideas for Black but all White's major attacking options are examined.

John Cox
The Berlin variation of the Spanish is one of the most popular openings among world class players. After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 Black can play a completely sound opening based mainly on understanding rather than memorizing theory. Many opening books make this claim, but the scarcity of forcing lines in the Berlin mean that in this case it is true. The trick is to gain the requisite understanding, and this is where John Cox's eloquent prose comes into its own. After reading his explanations it will be clear why this robust opening has gained the nickname The Berlin Wall.
Part one of the book is all about understanding the Berlin both in terms of pawn structure and piece play. After a Positional Introduction Cox examines all possible Berlin Defence endgames - pawn endings, knight endings, bishop endings, knight v bishop endings and various endings with rooks and minor pieces. He uses examples from games to ilustrate the dos and don'ts of these endgames for both sides. Chapter 3 takes a look at the positional and tactical themes arising from the Berlin, again with example game fragments from Grandmaster play.
Part two examines the theory of the Berlin Defence including systems with ..Ne7; ..Be7; and ..Bd7; for Black as well as White's early deviations such as 4.d3, 4.d4, and 4.Qe2. Cox offers an objective, detailed and well-researched overview of our current knowledge of the Berlin Defence.
John Cox is a lawyer and International Master from London. He is an experienced author whose previous books have received high praise. The current book is extremely well written, highly readable and clearly was a labour of love for the author.

Alexander Khalifman
Volume 2 of the opening repertoire based on that of Vishy Anand is concerned with the position arising after 1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.Bb5,a6; 4.Ba4. Part 1 looks at Black's 4th move possibilities such as 4..d6; 4..f5; and 4..Bc5 whilst Part 2 analyses Black's 5th move alternatives (after 5.Re1) to 5..Be7; which include the Moller Defence (5..Bc5) and the Open Defence (5..Nxe4) and Part 3 examines irregular systems after 5.Re1, Be7. Parts 4 and 5 cover the main Ruy Lopez defences such as the Breyer System, Zaitsev Variation, Smyslov System, Keres Variation and the Chigorin system. The analysis uses extracts from the games of leading players from chess history including Anand and author Alexander Khalifman has attempted to select the best lines of play from contemporary theory and to point out White's best chances of playing for a win. Each chapter has a conclusion and recommendations for both sides. With 435 pages there is plenty to ponder here but the Ruy Lopez has always been one of the most heavily analysed of all openings. GM Alexander Khalifman was the 14th FIDE World Champion.

Stefan Kindermann
The Spanish Exchange (1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.Bb5,a6; 4.Bxc6) is a principled opening relying entirely on an understanding of strategy and key ideas without the colossal amount of theory associated with many other openings. It was famously used by Bobby Fischer but also by more modern Grandmasters such as Timman, Shirov and Kasimdzhanov and continues to score well for White without offering Black many winning chances. In this book GM Stefan Kindermann, who plays the Spanish Exchange himself, offers expert analysis and clear explanations of the plans available for White via the medium of annotated, illustrative games. Although mainly written as a White repertoire, this is an objective coverage and the author points out Black's best defensive ideas. Sections include: Historical Introduction, Typical Positions and Illustrative Games - Theoretical Section and the book includes indexes of variations and players. Most of the illustrative games are recent making this the most up-to-date work available on the Spanish Exchange. The author is a German Grandmaster who has represented his country in six Olympiads.

The Dilworth is one of Black's most aggressive answers to the Ruy Lopez in which he gives up bishop & knight for a rook & two pawns. More importantly he has an attack on White's king in a complicated position. Schiller's book has two parts: part one introduces the theory of the Dilworth with analysis and complete games; part two examines the typical Dilworth endgames of B&N v R or B&B v R with pawns. A handy introduction to a sharp system.

Sabino Brunello
Marshall, Schliemann & Gajewski Systems
The Spanish Opening, 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5, is so respected that many Black players immediately start defending. Brunello shows that Black can engage in a tense fight for the win right from the start. In a repertoire book combining both in-depth analysis and strategic explanation he considers three gambits which have all been tested by top 10 players, with good results, in the last year.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5. The Marshall Attack forms the mainstay of this repertoire, being both sound and aggressive and favoured by the world's best. The theory is so complex that an expert guide is required, and Brunello is well suited to the task, having played the Marshall for most of his chess career. He devotes four chapters and nearly half of the book to the Marshall, surveying the Anti-Marshalls, Main Lines, 12.d3 Lines and Modern Ideas, utilising a combination of analysis and explanation to guide the reader through this complex gambit.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5. The Schliemann, with its reversed King's Gambit flair, has always been popular with club players, but grandmasters knew it was unsound. Then Teimour Radjabov started playing it successfully against the elite and sparked a revival. Here, three chapters describe a trustworthy repertoire for Black against 4.d3, 4.Nc3 and other, less common lines of play.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 0-0 9.h3 Na5 10.Bc2 d5. The Gajewski variation is a brand new, seemingly outrageous gambit. The position after White's tenth move had been reached a thousand times with 10...c5 universally played, when in the summer of 2007 the Polish grandmaster Gajewski revealed that Black has a fascinating gambit at his disposal. Subsequently it has been played at international level and the theory of the opening is still being worked out. Brunello shows, in two chapters how Black should respond to White's main tries 11.d3, 11.exd5, and 11.d4.
International Master Sabino Brunello is one of the leaders of the youthful revival in Italian chess. With a rating of 2547 he is well on the way to the Grandmaster title.

Bogdan Lalic
The Marshall Attack is one of the oldest and most important openings in the history of chess. Black sacrifices a pawn against the Ruy Lopez in exchange for a long-lasting attack. Generations of the world's top players have fought on the Marshall battleground, but the final verdict on its soundness has not yet been reached. However, of one thing you can be sure: Black certainly has a lot of fun in trying to checkmate the white king! It is perhaps because of this reason that as White, many Grandmasters, including the world number one Gary Kasparov, have decided to avoid the issue altogether, preferring the more tranquil waters of Anti-Marshall systems. The ideas and strategies of both approaches are studied in depth here by a renowned openings theoretician. Part one of the book covers the main-line Marshall after 1..c6; Part 2 looks at alternatives to 1..c6; and at the Steiner System 9..e4; Part 3 is the Anti-Marshall with 8.h3, 8.a4 and 8.d4. Coverage is by means of 105 annotated games, in ten chapters, showing the various systems of play in action.

The Marshall Attack (1.e4,e5; 2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.Bb5,a6; 4.Ba4,Nf6; 5.0-0,Be7; 6.Re1,b5; 7.Bb3,0-0, 8.c3,d5;) is one of Black's best known and most popular defences to the Ruy Lopez. Instead of suffering move-after-move of "Spanish Torture" Black sacrifices a pawn and has all the attacking fun in the ensuing, razor-sharp, middlegame!
However, the Marshall appears a forbidding opening to many club and tournament players, who feel that the theory is too complicated and lengthy to memorize. Many simply avoid it - with both colours. That, argues David Vigorito, is a shame. He shows that many typical Marshall positions can be broken down into elements that we can all grasp and use to guide us. Then we are able to tackle this incredible opening and develop a feel for why pieces go to the squares that they do, and when Black has sufficient compensation, and when he does not.
In this book International Master David Vigorito provides detailed, cutting-edge theoretical coverage of all the Marshall Attack main lines as well as early deviations and Anti-Marshall systems, including 8.a4, and 8.h3. He also explains the typical ideas for both sides in the Marshall Attack.
David Vigorito is an International Master from the United States. He plays regularly in high-level competitions, including the US Championship. He has written extensively for a variety of publications and is a chess teacher.
