ACTION CHESS ACTION CHESS(CODE t5079)
C J Purdy
This book is based on a series of articles written by Purdy called "Openings in 10 Hours". They are aimed at players (of the Black pieces mainly) who have a limited amount of time to devote to openings and want systems in which they can reach a playable middlegame every time. For Black Purdy recommends the QGD Tartakower Defence and French Defence 3.dxe4 system. There are also a few articles on the Colle System at the finish. The emphasis, as always with Purdy, is on understanding principles rather than memorizing variations.

AN EXPLOSIVE OPENING REPERTOIRE FOR BLACK (1...d6) AN EXPLOSIVE OPENING REPERTOIRE FOR BLACK (1...d6)(CODE g8350)
J Yrjola & J Tella
1..d6 is a flexible opening move which can transpose into various known defensive systems or lead into independent lines of play. In this, the most exhaustive manual on 1..d6 so far, the authors give a lot of attention to 1.d4,d6; 2.c4,e5; and 1.d4,d6; 2.Nf3,Bg4; offering in depth analysis on both systems. Against 1.e4, the Pirc Defence is recommended, particularly 5..c5; against the Austrian Attack. Parts 5 and 6 cover the Reti and English openings as well as the Old Indian Defence with ..Bf5. This is a well worked out repertoire for Black with enough analysis to offer a firm footing for new practitioners of 1..d6. Jouni Yrjola is a Finnish GM and Jussi Tella is a Finnish IM.

ATTACKING WITH 1.e4 ATTACKING WITH 1.e4(CODE p4267)
John Emms
GM Emms concentrates on building a non-theoretical repertoire in which understanding the strategy behind the opening is more important than being up-to-date with the latest theory. These are systems that are not at the cutting edge of theory and whose assessment does not need to be revised every week. Amongst others Emms recommends the Closed Sicilian, Bishop's Opening, King's Indian Attack against the French, the 150 Attack, 2.c4 against the Caro-Kann and lines against the Alekhine, Scandinavian and rarer defences. These are easy-to-learn openings which will pose plenty of practical problems to your opponent.

CHESS OPENINGS FOR WHITE, EXPLAINED CHESS OPENINGS FOR WHITE, EXPLAINED(CODE c2311)
Lev Alburt, Roman Dzindzichashvili & Eugene Perelshteyn
A heavyweight repertoire book for White featuring 1.e4! The layout and approach is similar to the companion volume "Chess Openings for Black Explained" by the same authors with an easy-to-follow layout.
On to the repertoire! Against 1..e5; they recommend the Scotch Gambit (2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.d4,exd4; 4.Bc4) and give lines against both the Giuoco Piano and Two Knights Defences. Against the Petroff you play the dangerous attacking line 5.Nc3. They also show how to combat the less common Philidor Defence, Latvian Gambit and Elephant Gambit. Against the Sicilian you play the Grand Prix Attack (2.Nc3, 3.f4) whilst you meet the French with Fischer's favourite 3.Nc3. The Caro-Kann is met with another Fischer weapon - the Exchange System. There are also interesting ideas to try against the Alekhine Defence, Centre Counter, Pirc/Modern and other rare defences.
Throughout the book the authors concentrate on systems of play which are sound at any level and give White a reasonable chance for an opening advantage. Their recommendations are very ideas orientated so you won't be struggling to remember reams of cutting edge theory.
Chess Openings for White Explained has a spacious, well organized layout with plenty of diagrams, various highlighted tips and memory markers at key points in the repertoire to aid assimilation of the material. Authors Lev Alburt and Roman Dzindzichashvili are both Grandmasters with a wealth of teaching experience whilst Eugene Perelshteyn is an International Master and pupil of Dzindzichashvili.

CHESS OPENINGS FOR BLACK EXPLAINED CHESS OPENINGS FOR BLACK EXPLAINED(CODE c2312)
Lev Alburt, Roman Dzindzichashvili & Eugene Perelshteyn
This is a repertoire book featuring the Accelerated Dragon, Nimzo- and Bogo-Indians, Symmetrical English and lines to play against less common White openings such as the Trompovsky, Colle and Torre systems. Specifically the book advocates 8...a5 against 7.Bc4 in the Accelerated Dragon and Gurgenidze’s ...Nxd4 against the Maroczy Bind. The move order advocated against 1.e4, is 1...c5; and 2...g6; to sidestep the Rossolimo variation. This sequence is also taken up against the Alapin Sicilian (2.c3). In the Nimzo-Indian the suggested line to meet 4.e3 is 4...b6 with ...Ba6 versus Ne2 and ...c5 versus Nf3. The authors also recommend lines against 4.a3, 4.Qc2, 4.Bg5 and the currently popular 4.f3. In the Bogo-Indian they advocate 4.Bd2 Qe7 with Black aiming for ...e5. Against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3 Black re-visits the anti-Maroczy Bind from the 1.e4 section and defends with 1...c5 and 2...g6. Chess Openings for Black Explained has a well organized layout with plenty of diagrams, various highlighted tips and memory markers at key points in the repertoire to aid assimilation of the material. Lev Alburt and Roman Dzindzichashvili are both Grandmasters with a wealth of teaching experience whilst Eugene Perelshteyn is an International Master and pupil of Dzindzichashvili.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR CHESS OPENING REPERTOIRE HOW TO BUILD YOUR CHESS OPENING REPERTOIRE(CODE g8389)
Steve Giddins
The author's contention is that too few players know how to study openings efficiently. With proper direction of their efforts it would be possible for them to build a reliable and effective repertoire. Giddins himself had almost no opening repertoire until, in his thirties, he went to Moscow and studied under a professional trainer who taught him some things that "every Russian schoolboy should know". The aim of this book is to pass on some of these lessons to the reader. Although this book doesn't go for in depth analysis of specific openings it does recommend openings to suit differing styles of play and openings which complement each other (e.g. French Defence and Dutch Defence). It also offers guidance on whether to play main lines or obscure systems, "universal" openings, the use and abuse of computers, move order questions, stylistic considerations and when to depart from your repertoire. The final chapter looks at the repertoire of some modern Grandmasters. Includes about 60 examples of opening play to illustrate the text. Steve Giddins is a FIDE Master from England and author of 101 Opening Traps.

PLAY 1..b6! PLAY 1..b6!(CODE p4410)
Christian Bauer
The principle appeal of 1...b6 is that it sidesteps mountains of opening theory as Black immediately directs the game into relatively uncharted territory, one where White players are not able to rely on their 'opening book' knowledge. Another attraction of 1...b6 is that it can be played against virtually every single first move by White, so it is a perfect choice for Black players with neither the time nor inclination to memorise a multitude of different defences. Despite being relatively unexplored, 1...b6 has been the weapon of some dynamic and uncompromising world-class players, including English Grandmasters Tony Miles and Jon Speelman. Here, in eleven chapters and four main sections, GM Christian Bauer offers an opening repertoire for Black based on 1..b6; through the medium of 82 complete, annotated games. He analyzes 1.e4,b6; 1.d4,b6; 1.c4,b6; and 1.Nf3,b6; in the four sections of the book, explaining White's various plans, how Black should counter them and highlighting the tactical and positional ideas for both players. The author is a French Grandmaster and columnist with Europe Echecs magazine.

STARTING OUT: 1.d4 STARTING OUT: 1.d4(CODE p4417)
John Cox
This is a repertoire book for White based on 1.d4 and 2.c4. Cox offers a combination of analysis, explanation and illustrative games to demonstrate the repertoire in action and freely concedes that familiarity gained through practical experience of these systems of play is the best way of trying to gain an advantage in your games. There is no killer "win every time" opening! He shows how to combat the Indian Defences (King's Indian, Grunfeld, Nimzo-Indian, Benko, Benoni), Queen's Gambit (QGD, QGA, Slav, Semi-Slav, Albin & Chigorin) and Black's other defences such as the Dutch, Modern, 1...b6 etc. The repertoire is based on sound positional considerations and, as such, is built to withstand the changing fashions of opening theory. John Cox is an English International Master and chess author.

STARTING OUT: 1.e4! STARTING OUT: 1.e4!(CODE p4416)
Neil McDonald
1.e4 is probably the move to pose most problems for Black in the opening but many players are reluctant to play it because of the amount of theory associated with certain Black defences and also because of the number of possible replies available to the second player. Here Neil McDonald has constructed a well thought out repertoire for White, based on sound yet aggressive lines of play, and illustrated using 56 master games, all extensively annotated. Against 1..e5; he recommends the Scotch Opening, also providing lines against the Latvian and Elephant counter gambits, the Petroff and the Philidor defences. Against 1..c5; he advocates playing open systems with 2.Nf3 and 3.d4. Against the Caro-Kann you play the Panov-Botvinnik Attack whilst the French is met with 3.Nd2 and the Korchnoi Gambit. Mcdonald also shows how to meet less common defences such as the Scandinavian, Alekhine's, Nimzowitsch and Pirc/Modern. With plenty of explanation this book is aimed at club players who would like to take up 1.e4 for the first time. Neil McDonald is an English Grandmaster and respected chess coach and author.

SURVIVE & BEAT ANNOYING CHESS OPENINGS: THE OPEN GAMES SURVIVE & BEAT ANNOYING CHESS OPENINGS: THE OPEN GAMES(CODE c2073)
Eric Schiller & John Watson
This is a handbook showing how to combat the tricky gambit lines and sharp systems that abound in the open games (1.e4,e5.) So the book is in two halves: the first shows how to handle White against such defences as the Cordel, Schliemann, Philidor Countergambit, Elephant Gambit, Latvian Gambit and others whereas the second offers some advice for Black against the Italian Game, Scotch/Goering Gambits, King's Gambit, Centre Game & Danish Gambit and other less common lines of play. The format for each opening is to have explanation and analysis followed by a summary table detailing the main variations in that opening. Careful study of these systems will help ensure that you are not caught out by the likes of the Rousseau Gambit or Mengarini Opening again! John Watson is an I.M. and author of the bestselling "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy". Eric Schiller is a U.S. National Master and author of many books on chess coaching.
