Andris Fride
The Latvian Vladimirs Petrovs achieved some excellent results in the mid to late 1930s, tying with Reshevsky and flohr at Keneri 1937, ahead of Alekhine and Keres. He also maintained an unbeaten record on top board for Latvia in the 1939 Olympiad against players such as Capablanca and Alekhine. However, when the Russians invaded Latvia during World War II he expressed anti-Russian sentiments and was arrested. He died in a Soviet labour camp in 1943. After his death he was written out of history by the Soviets and information on his achievements became very difficult to access. The author comes from a well known Latvian chess playing family and much of the material here is taken from his father's files. The book includes a brief biography of Petrovs, chronicling his chess career, together with 165 of his games, some with notes. There are also tournament crosstables, photographs and an index of openings.
Pub. 2004, softback, 194 pages.

This new book on Pillsbury has been published to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his death. Pillsbury became famous by winning the 1895 Hastings tournament ahead of Chigorin, Lasker, Tarrasch, Steinitz and many other strong masters. His direct, attacking style won him many admirers as did his impressive blindfold and simultaneous exhibitions. Although he never had a chance to play a match for the World championship, Pillsbury remained amongst the world's top players almost until his untimely death at the age of 33. In this book GM Alexander Cherniaev presents 50 of Pillsbury's best games, with annotations. He also includes a short biography and tournament cross tables detailing Pillsbury's career record. Alexander Cherniaev is a Russian Grandmaster now based in London.

This book presents facts, hitherto unknown to the chess world, that solve many of the mysteries of Edward Pindar's life. Included are new insights into his win against Morphy and the matches with Blackburne, but the key discovery is the event of 1877 that dramatically ended his twin careers of language teacher and professional chess player. Susan Polgar & Paul Truong
Susan Polgar provides an insider's view of the lives of the Polgar sisters, herself, Sofia and Judit, each with her own goals and aspirations. She takes readers through the incredible development of the three sisters as they pursued their dreams: becoming chess prodigies, growing into contenders, winning World titles and Olympiad gold medals, ending the Soviet dominance in women's chess, breaking through the gender and age barriers, and revolutionizing the game. Each sister has one chapter of the book devoted to her with career biography, ten annotated games and a best combinations section. Readers will also be privy to the thoughts and feelings the sisters experienced during major triumphs and disappointments, as Susan shares their most joyous moments and biggest heartbreaks. Another important issue covered is the strict but ultimately successful training techniques used by the Polgar sisters in their chess evolution. Susan Polgar is four times Women's World Chess Champion and now runs the Susan Polgar Foundation promoting chess throughout the U.S.A.
