VLADIMIRS PETROVS VLADIMIRS PETROVS(CODE x3361)
Andris Fride

The Latvian Vladimirs Petrovs achieved some excellent results in the mid to late 1930s, tying with Reshevsky and flohr at Keneri 1937, ahead of Alekhine and Keres. He also maintained an unbeaten record on top board for Latvia in the 1939 Olympiad against players such as Capablanca and Alekhine. However, when the Russians invaded Latvia during World War II he expressed anti-Russian sentiments and was arrested. He died in a Soviet labour camp in 1943. After his death he was written out of history by the Soviets and information on his achievements became very difficult to access. The author comes from a well known Latvian chess playing family and much of the material here is taken from his father's files. The book includes a brief biography of Petrovs, chronicling his chess career, together with 165 of his games, some with notes. There are also tournament crosstables, photographs and an index of openings.

HOW PURDY WON HOW PURDY WON(CODE t5080)
C J Purdy et al

When C J Purdy won the world’s first Correspondence Chess Championship in 1953 he had played only 46 competitive CC games in his life! These games gave him two Australian CC Championship titles and now the world title. He never played correspondence chess again! All Purdy’s CC games are annotated here, many by the man himself. Although Purdy was a strong player (I.M.) he was best known for the quality of his writings and annotations which are some of the most instructive in chess. It is said that Tarrasch taught chess to Europe whilst Purdy did the same for Australia. In this book you will find both hard fought correspondence chess games and extensive, enlightening annotations.
