CAPABLANCA IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (1911-1920) CAPABLANCA IN THE UNITED KINGDOM (1911-1920)(CODE o9569)
Dr Vlastimil Fiala

This is the first of a projected two volume series and describes the four visits made by Capablanca to the UK in 1911, 1913, 1919 and 1920. On each visit Capablanca played simultaneous displays against local enthusiasts. The first two visits were relatively short and exhibitions were confined to London and Birmingham but in 1919, following his triumph at the Hastings Victory Congress, the Cuban went "on tour" and played in 36 displays in English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish cities. In 1920 he played at Bristol and Woolwich as part of a European tour. Dr Fiala's research has unearthed 123 of Capablanca's simultaneous games, many never published in book form before, together with descriptions of the events taken from local newspapers of the time. This carefully researched book will be of interest to all those interested in chess history.
Pub. 2006, hardback, 379 pages.

J R CAPABLANCA VOL.1 GAMES 1888-1925 J R CAPABLANCA VOL.1 GAMES 1888-1925(CODE m0006)
Egon Varnusz

These two volumes include 826 of Capablanca’s games from throughout his career: 584 from tournament play and the rest from consultation and informal games. Many of these have annotations, often by Capablanca himself, reproduced from an extensive list of source material quoted in vol.2. There are also many contemporary articles on Capablanca including contributions from Tarrasch, Tartakower, Alekhine and others. Anecdotes include Lasker’s irritation at Capablanca’s late arrival for their game in Moscow 1936 and, after making his first move, shrouding the Cuban in a cloud of cigar smoke! Although these volumes are available separately, they have to be viewed as a single work since Capablanca’s tournament and match record appear in volume 1 whilst the index of openings and opponents together with the bibliography appear only in volume 2. Bearing this in mind, these are two well presented game collections with diagrams throughout.
