The author's contention is that too few players know how to study openings efficiently. With proper direction of their efforts it would be possible for them to build a reliable and effective repertoire. Giddins himself had almost no opening repertoire until, in his thirties, he went to Moscow and studied under a professional trainer who taught him some things that "every Russian schoolboy should know". The aim of this book is to pass on some of these lessons to the reader. Although this book doesn't go for in depth analysis of specific openings it does recommend openings to suit differing styles of play and openings which complement each other (e.g. French Defence and Dutch Defence).
