LONDON SYSTEM (DVD) LONDON SYSTEM (DVD)(CODE CBDLS)
Nigel Davies

By playing the London System, with 1.d4 followed by 2.Nf3 and 3.Bf4, White can avoid a theoretical discussion and instead use natural ability plus a knowledge of plans. The weight of the struggle tends to shift towards the middlegame, but White can also pull off devastatingly quick wins should Black be unaware of the dangers. Against some of the most natural moves you can imagine, White often whips up devastating attacks as can be seen in the games of David Bronstein, Gata Kamsky, Vlatko Kovacevic and Pavel Blatny. On this DVD Davies explains how White should play against Black's various different set-ups using twenty-one illustrative games. He also discusses how the typical pawn structures influence play later in the game, so the viewer will always know what he should be trying to do. Video running time: more than 4 hours.

ENDGAMES FOR EXPERTS (DVD) ENDGAMES FOR EXPERTS (DVD)(CODE CBDEE)
Rustam Kasimdzhanov

If you want to play successful chess you must pay great attention to the endgame. Because it is only if you handle the endgame correctly that you can turn an advantageous position into a full point or save half a point from an inferior position. On this DVD, Rustam Kasimdzhanov analyses the type of practical endgames which tournament players encounter on a daily basis. We are talking here about endgames which are still full of life, endgames which in the final analysis must be played out over the board. Using selected games of his own, he shows the importance of understanding positional factors such as an advantage in space, piece activity, pawn weaknesses, strong and weak squares, pawn majorities, passed pawns, etc. He explains what has to be known in order to make the correct strategic decisions and to find the correct plan in such endings. Studying the examples in this 3.5 hour long video course will certainly pay off for you in your own games. Kasimdzhanov's outstanding and easily understandable explanations will certainly help you to substantially improve your own performance in the endgame.

Rustam Kasimdzhanov, the grandmaster from Uzbekistan has for many years been known as a very strong and imaginative player. However in 2004 Rustam Kasimdzhanov shocked the chess world by winning the FIDE world chess championship title, beating a string of world-class players like Ivanchuk, Grischuk, Topalov and Adams in the process.

ALEXEI SHIROV: MY BEST GAMES WITH BLACK (DVD) ALEXEI SHIROV: MY BEST GAMES WITH BLACK (DVD)(CODE CBDASB)
Alexei Shirov

If you want to win with Black, you must decide which is the best strategy to achieve your aim. Should you take risks and go for the win right from move one, or should you patiently set about achieving equality and then wait for mistakes by White? Which opening should you choose and what is the role played by opening preparation? What can you do when you even have to win with Black, because, e.g., a match can only be saved by a win with Black in the very last game - a situation which has become all the more familiar because of the ever-rising number of knock-out tournaments? Alexei Shirov tries to answer these questions by referring to his own games as Black. In doing so, he describes how his own attitude to this problem has changed over his career, right up to his successes in the 2007 World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, in which he reached the final. Video running time: 6 h 45 m.

CHESS FOR SCOUNDRELS (DVD) CHESS FOR SCOUNDRELS (DVD)(CODE CBDCS)
Nigel Davies

Psychology is one of the most important aspects of chess yet most players put themselves at a serious disadvantage by ignoring this aspect of the game. Being "nice" is all very well in civilian life but in the war zone of the chess board a more ruthless approach is required. The fact of the matter is that a good chess player must be something of a scoundrel in order to survive. On this DVD Davies discusses the various ways by which a player can conduct psychological warfare, from inducing Pavlovian responses to insulting the opposition with provocative moves. A knowledge of these methods is essential for the serious tournament competitor, if only to avoid becoming another victim. Video running time: more than 4 hours.

Nigel Davies has been a Grandmaster since 1993 and is a former British Open Quickplay and U21 Champion. With more than 30 years international tournament experience he is well versed in the various tactics that can be used.

POWER PLAY 6: PAWNS, PIECES & PLANS (DVD) POWER PLAY 6: PAWNS, PIECES & PLANS (DVD)(CODE CBDPP6)
Daniel King

If you want to be a well-rounded chessplayer, it is vital that you have a good understanding of positional play. In this 6th Power Play DVD, Daniel King discusses three classic questions: - the Isolated Queen’s Pawn - central passed pawns - when to exchange pawns (and when not to exchange pawns) In each case, the slightest difference in the placement of pieces can make a massive difference to the assessment of the position. At the end of the lectures, you can test your understanding of these themes by examining a series of specially selected test positions. The Power Play series is suitable for anyone looking to improve their chess, but also provides ready-made lessons and exercises for a trainer.

Grandmaster Daniel King has been a professional chess player for more than 20 years. During that time he has represented England on many occasions, including an historic match victory over the Soviet Union in Reykjavik, 1990. At the same time he has distinguished himself as a coach, helping many of England's younger generation to achieve their potential. Besides his chess career, he has built up a reputation as a commentator on television, radio and the internet. He is also an award-winning author of more than 15 books. Video running time: 5 hours.

This is currently is one of the most hotly contested openings in grandmaster practice. The opening appears in almost every top tournament, with novelties sometimes appearing every few days. Ex-FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov gives an introduction into the latest developments of this variation, starting with the game Radjabov - Anand played at the Chess Classics in Mainz in August 2006. His chronological presentation of the events is as exciting as a thriller, the "scenes of crime" being the top tournaments of the last two years (among others the Word Championship Mexiko City 2007, World Cup Khanty-Mansiysk 2007, Wijk aan Zee 2008) and the actors the players of the world elite. At the tournament in Wijk aan Zee 2008 Topalov, to the amazement of the chess world, opened a completely new chapter of the variation by beating his archrival Kramnik in the style of the masters of the 19th century, sacrificing a knight with 12.Nxf7 early on. Don't miss this chess thriller, enjoy the presentation of current chess theory at highest level in 3.5 hours of video.

KING'S INDIAN ATTACK (DVD) KING'S INDIAN ATTACK (DVD)(CODE CBDKIA)
Nigel Davies

The King's Indian Attack is a unique opening system in that it offers White a dynamic and interesting game but without the need to know reams of theory. In addition to being easy to learn it has an excellent pedigree, leading exponents including great players such as Bobby Fischer, Tigran Petrosian, David Bronstein, Viktor Korchnoi, Leonid Stein and Lev Psakhis. It is playable as either a complete, self-contained opening system or as part of a regular 1.e4 repertoire. On this DVD Davies presents a complete repertoire for White as well as the lines he can use to supplement a King's Pawn repertoire. Having had extensive experience in these positions he is able to communicate the plans and ideas in lucid fashion. Video running time: more than 5 hours. BOGO-INDIAN DEFENCE (CD) BOGO-INDIAN DEFENCE (CD)(CODE CBBI)
Boris Shipkov

The Bogo-Indian (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+) stands out for two reasons: the concept behind the opening is simple and therefore easy to learn; and the Bogo-Indian has the reputation of being a reliable drawing weapon (statistically backed up by a high number of draws with it). This makes it an excellent second choice opening and it is on occasion used as such even by many world class players.

Schipkov explains in 21 texts the ideas behind the Bogo-Indian Defence and provides links to the most important model games. The author has annotated some 400 of these exclusively for this CD. In addition it contains a training database with 20 games in it, which contain more than 250 training questions. The CD is rounded off with an opening tree of all the 17,500 games.

Russian chess theorist Boris Schipkov, born in 1962, lives in Novosibirsk and has already published a number of books and articles, including the CDs Queen’s Gambit Accepted, Dutch Defence A90-A99, Dutch Defence A86-A89, Dutch Defence A80-A85 and King’s Indian Defence, Saemisch System.

ALEXEI SHIROV: MY BEST GAMES IN THE GRUNFELD (DVD) ALEXEI SHIROV: MY BEST GAMES IN THE GRUNFELD (DVD)(CODE CBDAS10)
Alexei Shirov

The Gruenfeld Indian is an active and dynamic reply to 1.d4 which can lead to complex and extremely sharp positions. So it's no wonder that also Alexei Shirov included this opening, which at its debut in tournament practice was called hypermodern, into his repertoire. At the candidates' final against Vladimir Kramnik in Cazorla in 1998, he exclusively, and successfully, trusted the Gruenfeld Indian with Black; the victory over Kramnik gave him the right to play a W.Ch. match versus Kasparov. In the first part of the DVD Shirov extensively comments on his five Black games from the Kramnik match, giving deep insights into opening preparation and match strategy at the highest level. In the second part Shirov reveals, among other things, how in his opposite-coloured bishop endgame against Topalov in Linares in 1998 he found the amazing and unique move, which will secure the game a place in chess history forever. And this is not the only flash of inspiration the Super Grandmaster will present in his videos! Running time: 5:25 hours

Alexei Shirov was born in Riga, Latvia. At the beginning of the 1990s, a comet-like ascent brought the young Latvian to the top of the chess world. In his early twenties he already had an Elo rating of nearly 2750 and belonged to the absolute elite. Since then Shirov has been one of the best players in the world, delighting all chess fans with original and amazing ideas on the board.

MY BEST GAMES IN THE SPANISH VOL. 2 (DVD) MY BEST GAMES IN THE SPANISH VOL. 2 (DVD)(CODE CBDAS9)
Alexei Shirov

Shirov's first Ruy Lopez DVD found an enthusiastic reception by the audience. In this second and current volume, Alexei Shirov continues his presentation with topical games of his own, starting in October 2006. At the high-class tournaments of last year and also during the candidate matches in Elista (versus Adams and Aronian), Shirov trusted the Spanish Opening both with the white and the black pieces. As Black, he most successfully returned to the system 5. ... b5 6.Bb3 Bc5 (5 games). As White, he had to face the difficult question how to deal best with the popular Marshall Attack (8. ... d5) (3 games). Further topics of discussion are the Berlin Defence as well as important systems of the Closed Ruy Lopez like the Breyer, the Flohr-Saitzev or the Chigorin. Enjoy six hours of chess with one of the best players of our times.
