CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 1 CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 1(CODE c2515)
Bruce Harper & Yasser Seirawan

In the era before computer-driven homogenization of chess styles and the instant transmission of new moves through the internet, chess players had distinctive styles, and none was more distinctive than that of Canadian Grandmaster Duncan Suttles. Few players has been as willing to take risks as Suttles, and his games combine fearlessness and creativity in a unique way. Suttles played fighting, uncompromising chess. While his ideas may not always have been objectively correct, his opponents faced the challenge of proving that at the board. Suttles was not afraid to lose games, and he was even less afraid to lose post-mortems!

In this, the first volume of a three-volume series, 100 of Suttles' games are analysed in detail. Readers of all levels of experience and ability will enjoy these games and learn from them. The games are arranged into themed chapters with titles ranging from "Positional Play", "Attacks" and King Walks" to "Weird Manoeuvres", "Crash & Burn", and "Psychology".

Bruce Harper is a many time British Columbia Chess Champion and has known Suttles for 40 years. Yasser Seirawan is a leading Grandmaster, former World Junior Champion, 4 time U.S. Chess Champion and a widely respected chess author.
Pub. 2008, hardback, 336 pages.

CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 2 CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 2(CODE c2516)
Bruce Harper & Yasser Seirawan

In this, the second volume of a three-volume series, over 200 games of Canadian Grandmaster Duncan Suttles are analysed in depth. This volume features games which begin with the "A" category of openings, using the opening classification system popularized by the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings.

Classifying Suttles' openings is no easy task. The reader will find many games described as "Unnamed Opening", which have in common only the signature first move 1.g3. The opaque intricacies of the "Suttles System" are explored in this volume, along with many epic games starting with the English Opening, which Suttles played for White and faced as Black. Many of Suttles' attacking ideas from the Closed Sicilian (coming in Volume 3) are seen here.

Another important series of games for the serious student are the "Rats" (1...g6) where White foregoes an immediate attack and proceeds more positionally with 3.c4. The Strategic plans and tactics Suttles devised in this opening are as valid today as when they were played.

Most of all, this volume features many hard-fought, uncompromising and confusing games by one of the most original and fearless Grandmasters to have played the Royal Game.

Bruce Harper is a many time British Columbia Chess Champion and has known Suttles for 40 years. Yasser Seirawan is a leading Grandmaster, former World Junior Champion, 4 time U.S. Chess Champion and a widely respected chess author.

CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 3 CHESS ON THE EDGE: VOLUME 3(CODE c2517)
Bruce Harper & Yasser Seirawan

The third volume of a three-volume series on Canadian Grandmaster Duncan Suttles features 300 games which begin with the "B" to "E" categories of openings, using the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings opening classification system.

For much of his career, Suttles played 1.e4, and in this volume examines his unique approaches to the Alekhine's, Caro-Kann, French and Sicilian Defenses. The reader will discover new possibilities in the advanced variations against the Caro-Kann and French, learn to fear the Portland Attack (although for which side might be in doubt), and will fond a gold mine of ideas in the Closed Sicilian.

As Black, Suttles was an unwavering proponent of 1...g6, and devotees of this opening will find many "Rat" and Pirc Defenses, including games against some of the world's top players. Suttles didn't play favorites! He played fearless chess, and the final volume of his game collection contains its full quota of dramatic, intense struggles.

Bruce Harper is a many time British Columbia Chess Champion and has known Suttles for 40 years. Yasser Seirawan is a leading Grandmaster, former World Junior Champion, 4 time U.S. Chess Champion and a widely respected chess author.
