Edward Dearing
Author Eddie Dearing advocates the Modern Exchange Grunfeld with 7.Nf3 and 8.Rb1 in this heavy duty theoretical manual which is based around 50 complete games with extensive annotations. Dearing's main aim is to provide a reliable opening repertoire for White against the Grunfeld and, to this end, he advocates lines of play against all Black's defensive options, both common and rare, in nine packed chapters. He offers his own conclusions and recommendations at the end of each chapter. Eddie Dearing is a Scottish International Master.

Valentin Bogdanov
The Grunfeld Defence arises after 1.d4,Nf6; 2.c4,g6; 3.Nc3,d5; and appeared on the scene in the 1920s, as one of the new "hypermodern" opening systems. At the highest level it has been used by Botvinnik, Smyslov, Fischer and, of course, Kasparov in two of his matches against Karpov. White has many ways of continuing and these are explained clearly in Valentin Bogdanov's book. In eight chapters he examines the Clssical and Modern Exchange Systems, the Fianchetto System, the Russian System, lines with Bf4, or Bg5, and the quiet e3, lines. Using 25 well annotated games Bogdanov seeks to explain the underlying ideas as well as the tactical nuances of the Grunfeld in an unbiased way. His book is aimed at club and tournament level players wishing to make the Grunfeld part of their repertoire or learn how to play against it.
Chess Explained books offer an understanding of an opening and the middlegames to which it leads, enabling you to find the right moves and plans in your own games. It is as if you were sitting at the board with a chess coach answering your questions about the plans for both sides, the ideas behind particular moves, and what specific knowledge you need to have.
International Master Valentin Bogdanov has over thirty years' experience as a chess trainer, and is from Ukraine. His pupils include Moskalenko, Savchenko and Drozdovsky, and he has acted as a second for the well-known grandmaster and theoretician Viacheslav Eingorn since the late 1970s.
Pub. 2009, softback, 127 pages.

Konstantin Sakaev
In this new book GM Konstatin Sakaev analyzes all major systems after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 Bg7 7.Bc4. He also pays considerable attention to unusual, but tricky schemes as 7...0-0 8.Ne2 Qd7 and 8...Nc6. The author shows how Black could equalise when White deviates from the most testing variations, for example, in the case of 7...c5 8.Ne2 Nc6 9.Be3 0-0 and now 10.Rc1 or 10.Rb1. Of course the focus of the book is on the topical position which arises after 7...c5 8.Ne2 Nc6 9.Be3 0-0 10.0-0. The readers will find a detailed explanation and analysis of all reasonable continuations with Sakaev's recommendations of where to look for an advantage. The author reveals some very promising novelties on the main road of his favourite variation.
Sakaev's work looks at the Grunfeld from White's point of view and it is intended to help players create problems for Black in this defence. Still it would be interesting for the players who enjoy playing the Gruenfeld Defence with Black as well. This book has summarizes theory up to March 2006.
Pub. 2006, softback, 426 pages.

Jacob Aagard
The Grunfeld Defence's first outing resulted in victory for Ernst Grunfeld over Alexander Alekhine, who was not best pleased (see book for details). Thus, in 1922, a new opening was born and it has been going strong ever since with Botvinnik, Fischer and Kasparov amongst it's practitioners. In this book, the latest in the excellent "Starting Out" series, I.M. Jacob Aagaard explores the ideas and tactics available to both sides in the Grunfeld. In seven chapters containing 47 complete, annotated games he illustrates the latest theory in the Classical Exchange System (two chapters), the Modern Exchange System (two chapters), the Russian System, Bf4 & Bg5 Systems and Other White Systems. Presentation is aimed at newcomers to the Grunfeld with tips, tricks and traps highlighted throughout. The standard of analysis makes this book suitable for experienced players who want to expand their opening repertoire rather than complete beginners. Coverage is balanced with no particular bias towards either side.
Pub. 2004, softback, 176 pages.
