John Watson
In this highly-acclaimed series, John Watson helps chess-players achieve a more holistic and insightful view of the openings. He explains not only the ideas and strategies behind specific openings, but also the interconnections of chess openings taken as a whole. By presenting the common threads that underlie opening play, Watson provides a permanent basis for playing openings of any type.
In this final volume Watson examines the Reti Opening as well as some other less popular flank openings and defences such as Bird's Opening, the Modern Defence and queenside fianchetto. He also draws together many themes in a wide-ranging discussion of general opening topics - opening themes such as gambit play and symmetry. In the process, he covers a wide variety of opening ideas and variations not seen in the earlier volumes.
Contents include:
* Réti and Fianchetto Systems
* Reversed Openings
* Symmetry
* Irregular Openings
* Gambits: Primitive or Positional
* Universal Openings
In the final two chapters, Watson presents his views on the importance of opening study and explains how players should best prepare and choose their openings for the level at which they play. He looks at the future of chess openings and explains which skills will be most important as chess evolves in the forthcoming decades.
International Master John Watson is one of the world's most respected writers on chess. In 1999, his Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy won 'Chess Book of the Year' awards in the USA and the UK. As a trainer, he has worked with many talented pupils, including Tal Shaked and Hikaru Nakamura.

Jeroen Bosch (Ed)
Secrets of Opening Surprises brings you a wide variety of unusual opening ideas. They may seem outrageous at first sight, but have proven to be perfectly playable. An SOS deviates very early from the regular lines in a mainstream opening, usually even before move six! That is why it is so easy to actually bring the variation on the board.
You will baffle your opponent without having studied large quantities of stuffy theory!
SOS is ideal for players who don't have enough time to keep abreast of main line theory. Appears twice a year.

Boris Alterman
The Alterman Gambit Guide: White Gambits is aimed at club players who would like to play sharp, gambit openings with White after 1.e4. The ideas behind each of the gambit openings in the Guide are explained and illustrated using annotated key games. These are followed by a theoretical section which explains the most important lines of play in that gambit. Boris Alterman includes chapters on the Evans Gambit, Caro-Kann Panov Attack, Morra Gambit, Philidor, Danish Gambit, Urusov Gambit, Morphy Attack, Cochrane Gambit, Max Lange Attack and Milner-Barry Gambit. He offers White a gambit option against all of Black's major defences.
Ukranian born Grandmaster Boris Alterman studied in the Botvinnik-Kasparov chess school and is now living in Israel. He worked on the openings book for the Deep Junior chess software which drew a match with Kasparov in 2003.

Lev Alburt, Roman Dzindzichashvili & Eugene Perelshteyn
This is a revised 2nd edition of the heavyweight repertoire book for White featuring 1.e4! The new edition incorporates changes to opening theory and updates from the authors' own analysis. The layout and approach is similar to the companion volume "Chess Openings for Black Explained" by the same authors with an easy-to-follow layout.
On to the repertoire! Against 1..e5; they recommend the Scotch Gambit (2.Nf3,Nc6; 3.d4,exd4; 4.Bc4) and give lines against both the Giuoco Piano and Two Knights Defences. Against the Petroff you play the dangerous attacking line 5.Nc3. They also show how to combat the less common Philidor Defence, Latvian Gambit and Elephant Gambit. Against the Sicilian you play the Grand Prix Attack (2.Nc3, 3.f4) whilst you meet the French with Fischer's favourite 3.Nc3. The Caro-Kann is met with another Fischer weapon - the Exchange System. There are also interesting ideas to try against the Alekhine Defence, Centre Counter, Pirc/Modern and other rare defences.
Throughout the book the authors concentrate on systems of play which are sound at any level and give White a reasonable chance for an opening advantage. Their recommendations are very ideas orientated so you won't be struggling to remember reams of cutting edge theory.
Chess Openings for White Explained has a spacious, well organized layout with plenty of diagrams, various highlighted tips and memory markers at key points in the repertoire to aid assimilation of the material. Authors Lev Alburt and Roman Dzindzichashvili are both Grandmasters with a wealth of teaching experience whilst Eugene Perelshteyn is an International Master and pupil of Dzindzichashvili.
Revised 2nd edition published 2010, softback, 542 pages.
