This is the first in a series of manuals based on Artur Yusupov's teaching course at his chess academy and is aimed at players who can play chess, but still need to acquire the building blocks of chess knowledge. (Roughly up to 1500 ELO [110 ECF]) It is based on Soviet training methods which proved so effective in the past and contains 24 teaching modules and 24 tests plus a final test at the end of the course.
Yusupov covers the key aspects of checkmates, tactics, calculation, positional play, strategy, opening ideas and endgame play. The examples given are of a practical nature, likely to be useful to a developing player, and the layout is easy to follow with clear explanations of each idea plus diagrammed examples and advice.
Artur Yusupov was ranked No. 3 in the world from 1986 to 1992, just behind the legendary World Champions Karpov and Kasparov. He has won everything there is to win in chess except for the World Championship. In recent years he has worked as a chess trainer with players ranging from current World Champion Anand to local amateurs in Germany, where he resides.
